Re: Nicknames: How They Should Work
I like the nickname Dayman because ingame I am DAYton MANn, also I'm usually responsible for putting the lights on so I think it works out well.

Re: Nicknames: How They Should Work
How to get a nickname Derp style:
1. Get fucked up real bad by a sulaco medic learning his job.
2. Paint the operating theatre red with your blood.
3. Spend another half a hour on the table while 3 other doctors try to save you from what the dumb one did to you.
4. Get up and paint medbay red because you still bleed from somewhere.
5. Get nicknamed "Red".

Re: Nicknames: How They Should Work
I never address anyone by their nickname.
I'm completely fine with them, if they have a reason.
I believe nicknames should be EARNED.
People that come on and just give to themselves sadden me.
You either have a good, well made reason for it or you earned it ingame.

Re: Nicknames: How They Should Work
I can't stand nicknames, primarily because it makes looking at names as a BO/XO/CO in chat while trying to coordinate squads and Sulaco Staffa bother, especially if someone has the same nickname as someone else, or their nickname is someone else's first or last name.
I'm not against the concept of nicknames, most military units DONT use actual names for each other in combat, relying either on cal-signs or nicknames, but they could at least be implemented in a cleaner manner rather than:
First name 'CAPITALIZED NICKNAME' Surname

Re: Nicknames: How They Should Work
My only remark on nicknames/callsigns is they should be short, so "Day" is better then "Dayman", and "DM" is better still.
Otherwise they can be earned in-game (I even contributed to a couple emerging) or come from previous "offscreen" history.
I am yet to see a lot of repeating callsigns myself, at least in one squad.

Manfred Hayden is "Dutch" because his mother was Dutch. Explaining his elaborate backstory and his strained relationship with his mother would be downright idiotic during a mission, so its assumed his nickname was developed in the days, weeks, and months before the mission. People could always ask WHY his nickname is Dutch, and then we have a nice backstory chat hook... when we're not bayoneting facehuggers.
DEAD: Haidee Beck says, "Yea dutch was great, i liked the stressed out SL act"
DEAD: Manfred 'Dutch' Hayden says, "RIGHT! The stress was roleplaying. YUP."

Re: Nicknames: How They Should Work
As I understand it, the nicknames on the IDs are abstractions. Instead of reading Dakota 'Dak' Marshall, my toon's ID reads "PFC Marshall, Dakota T. A27/TQ4.0.48215E9." The inclusion of the nickname on the ID is so that players who choose to know their nickname know it.
The only time you should reasonably give yourself a nickname is if it is an abbreviation of your name. For example, "RamRod" is made from RAMiro RODriguez.
If you absolutely must give yourself a nickname, make it something that someone would actually give for someone.
That means it's:
-easy to say (Nobody will want to use your nickname if you go by Joe 'Archipelago' Smith)
-understood immediately (You may know who Quetzalcoatl, the Mesoamerican snake god of corn is, but 99.93% of people won't.)
-Memorable (There's too many 'Thunders' and 'Spectres' out there [No offence if that's your nickname])
-Something somebody would actually call someone! (Like Hell I'm calling someone 'Godkiller' or something)

Re: Nicknames: How They Should Work
70% of the time people use my nickname, because to type "Red" you have to press 3 buttons that are all next to each other. "Lockie" requires quite a bit of dancing on the keyboard.
So yeah, very short, easy to say/type nicknames are where's it at.

Re: Nicknames: How They Should Work
Just think of "nicknames" as "official callsigns" and it all becomes much clearer, including them being short and on the actual ID.

Re: Nicknames: How They Should Work
I wish more people would read this guide. I don't know how many marines are running out there with nicknames that absolutely no one ever uses or talks about, but I'd say it's the majority. The great irony is that a lot of them are self-appointed rather than actual nicknames.

I never use nicknames to begin with simply because most of them are A. Stupid as hell or B. Unrelated and a waste of my time.\N wrote:I wish more people would read this guide. I've gotten "Salt" as a nickname and it would fit my usual style but it's stupid and I'd rather not put it on my ID.
