If I can't be arsed to wait for attachments I tend to just opt for a Standard Pulse Rifle. It's not that bad.

Nero is right. I only use the standard Pulse rifle with maybe a bayonet or rail light if I can find or make them. I'm a pretty robust fucker and I think most attachments are a crutch for robusto-wannabes. There are exceptions to this but most attachment hogs are tacticool dorks.

Highly unlikely. When alone and dragging back the wounded or hugged you stand little chance of escaping even with fancy gadgets. I often see men who I try to save run back to the Xenos to get their attachment-clad rifles and shotguns and recieve either 10x24mm to the chest or get clipped across the scalp with 12ga. buckshot. And that's if they don't get captured right off the bat.

Rail light is robust as fuck, im sad that more people don't take it. If everyone in your squad takes a rail flashlight, you literally do not need flares at all, because the only tiles you don't see in is like 2 dark tiles and thats it; the rest you have a full view of.

Rail light is legitimately the best "general" attachment that any random marine can get their hands on. So you could technically get an entire squad with it, it would be ridicolously useful. We need an SL to order their entire squad to use rail lights. or RO to only give out rail lights for that slot. Just to see what would happen.
