That was me! I was the one that delimbed you! I remember that, since I died shortly after I observed you for quite a bit and it was amazing. Things like that really spice up the round. I was so glad you actually survived.Helgraf wrote:I remember this one round on ice colony where a hunter pounced on me and cut off my left arm. I had my marine cry, whimper, and scream about his arm for a while, I also RPed him being traumatized, not exactly sure if I did good with the trauma, but it was fun. Also, good job writing this Saul.

Re: Embrace the Suck
This is one part that I love too, I like to say all kinds of weird stuff to the doctors when I play muhreen to give them a laugh IRL and give them a chance to shoot back something witty. It's fun for everyone involved.Monoo wrote:I have a thing.
Whenever my marine drops into a near-dead enough state (passed out in paincrit at least once, or low on blood) I like to get delirious until cured. I start mumbling old war flashbacks and talking to my character's dead mama. Good for setting the mood.
It's also fun to go into shock for a few seconds after a sudden injury like a severed limb or explosion.
I mostly play Doc/CMO so I largely try to talk to people like a real doctor might. As CMO I like to inject just a slight bit of smartass in there like my character knows he's the smartest person on the ship whether he actually is or not. I once corrected a marine when they called the xenos "aliens" because I asked if they were terrestrial to LV264 and if so, that would make them terrestrial and not aliens.

Re: Embrace the Suck
This just sounds like a poor excuse for the server's myriad flaws and leads to stuff like the april 2nd engie nerf or the researcher role being more akin to "sweatshop worker", among other things.
Losing can be fun but often it's just boring (especially if you're at the "wait for the aliens to feel they've evolved enough and crash that plane already" phase of the round) and there's plenty of ways one could preserve "muh perfect imbalance" while making the game more enjoyable for both sides.

If everyone embrace the suck how are we suppose to reach daily salt production quotas?! We need to sell the salts to keep the server going!

Feweh, did you actually sticky this?
You will never be as bad as the baldie who picked up a tactical shotgun while a hunter was pouncing on top of a CMO for 4 seconds, with his only response being to pace around before being decap'd by said hunter. You are not Brett Kimple, and you never will be. You are not the reason why I regular MP.

Re: Embrace the Suck
It's ironic that while I refuse to "embrace the Suck", I have never powergamed or exploited the game. I always just play my role, which happens to be a member of the U.S. military. A role with the mandate to defend our territory and defeat anyone who poses a threat to the nation and its people.Feweh wrote:This isnt a choice, not embracing the suck is a perma ban now.
P.S. I will continue to salt at my own discretion.

Re: Embrace the Suck
This whole post, so many times. The role of the marine is to create a cool story, and be interesting in the process. As an antagonist, you complicate the life of marines. Play the game to see what happens, and to have your badass marine world be complicated by space monstrosities.
The suck is love. The suck is life. The suck is the reason this game stays entertaining despite playing ostensibly the same story every round.

This post made me cry tears of suck.
This is exactly why I play marine, to have Waffle's story unfold, to see the fun loving shenanigan causing waffle be horrifically scarred by what he sees, assuming he even survives the first drop.

Re: Embrace the Suck
On CM I'm not playing to win, I'm playing to have fun, Or at the least get a story out of my death.
Winning is fun, sure, but it's not everything.
Going down with a squad of not enough men on the Rasputin against a horde of 20-30 xenos and surviving to make it back out, That is what got me hooked on CM.

Re: Embrace the Suck
Obviously it's lame to exploit bugs and design oversights, but as far as not trying to win goes, nah, I aint gonna "Embrace the Suck". Thats the kind of shit that Winston Smith would say right after staggering out of room 101.
Games are about having fun, and speaking personally, I had much more fun that time I killed 3 aliens as a survivor than I did the the innumerable times I got taken out by screeches or hugger combat. In Colonial Marines, victory is uncommon for the average marine, therefore it is novel. Defeat, however, happens constantly, therefore it is predictable and tedious. Victory means you live, and get to keep on playing as a marine, which is fun. Dying means being a boring ghost or playing as a xeno, which isn't as enjoyable for most people.(Yeah yeah there's ERTs *if* you get them)
Yes, its a roleplaying game, and most players are playing the role of a carefully sculpted, all American murder machine who's been ordered to do all they can to defeat the enemy and achieve victory and glory. The OP seems to be implying that doing everything to achieve victory(within the rules) and roleplaying are mutually exclusive, but in my opinion, they're virtually the same thing for a marine.
In short, victory is fun, losing sucks, and OP's rant was nothing but a bunch of unpatriotic, treasonous defeatism. Pretty sure he's a communist. Oorah!
