My biggest raisin for no is that the whitelist is only for how good people are at the role.

Whitelists should imo be for roleplay, not gunny shootyness
Commander Joseph 'Goliath' Clancy, occaisonal Charlie SL. Widowed father of three. Sufferer of PTSD and extremely Australian.
Corpswoman Judith 'Mèrci' Clancy, quiet, caring daughter looking out for her siblings.
Warrant Officer Emile Clancy, Strict ex-police chief, now a tired CMP.
Xenomorph Queen 'Pandinus' ruler of the Alpha Hive. "I want more children!"
'R'ka Us'Tribi' Serpent Trapper, hateful predator.

If any profession should get bare-bone whitelisting - it is Squad Lead, but that is if you actually say that we need any more whitelists

And the ever prominent suggestion of a "time gated wall" ergo. Play so long as a pfc before you can pick higher tier roles.

Might help in shitlers and griefers as well. Limiting damage done if they have to put time and effort into getting the better toys they might not want to grief and end up banu. *shrug*

I know it would be hard to do that, but I personally like applying for whitelists. It allows me to use up my time wisely and is a good way I can improve and reflect what to do and not to do. It could also reduce the rule breaking as these roles, as they would not want to get it removed/suspended.

Time locked would be the way to go, imo.

As said before, white-listing is used for more rp-oriented roles. Having a role like Spec white-listed would make it harder for new players to actually play Spec and learn how to play it.

Time locking would let people know that a Spec isn't completely new at the game.

We need to have an Obligatory Specialist Training Course. People who pass get an automatic whitelist. ;)

I'm pretty sure the devs shy away from time locks due to the fact that the time lock system doesn't follow "Time in game" but "Time IRL"

So youd technically be able to play one game on January and not play a month but the game would still mark it as a month passed.

No more whitelists please. I think our system at the minute is fine. No point trying to fix what isn't broken. People will try to have their spec made more exclusive because they don't want to compete with 50 other people in the server with spec set to high pref, but that's just the server culture. One of the most unappealing things I see in SS13 servers when I first join them is timelocks and excessive whitelisting.

We had a XO who didn't know how to right click give, another XO didn't know how to unbuckle himself. We had SL/Spec ghosting at roundstart, resulting in their bans (log before PM/ignore PM).
All of this can be avoided if there is a time lock to prevent new players from (mis)clicking them, at little as 1 hour will do.

Most whitelisted roles have both heavy RP obligations, aswell as power like the CO having, outside of admin intervention complete overriding control over the entirety of the almayer. Synthetic has to act non-human and completely adhere to marine law but also has close to max skill in everything. While a Predator has both RP and honor code to adhere to alongside powerful items and being responsible for using them properly. Ultimately a specialist while powerful doesn't have much RP obligation/Indirect power outside of Unga Dunga shoot lizard, being unable to do much that isn't directly combat.

What on earth are you smoking to make you think that?

Several servers have already locked roles behind a playtime wall, Paradise is maybe the most prominent. There are several servers with this kind of lock I haven't played on in months and find that there are still antag options and jobs I am barred from because of my lack of playtime on the server.

It can be done. Question is whether the devs want to put the time in to make it happen/deem it necessary.

I'm talking about the only time lock system which would be viable, I thought it was obvious tracking the ingame timers of up to 250 people in game at a time with a constant time tick is just a recipe for laggy gameplay rather than for example looking at Byond account creation date or joining date.

Just because other servers have other systems does not mean it's viable for CM.

I've spoken to a few other devs regarding this, the method you suggest is extremely unlikely to ever happen.

I like time locks, as long as you can play MT, while not being able to play CE.

As in, you must get in some time as MT to be promoted to CE.

It will also make players feel good about them being in that rank, while they also know they earned it.

But, I am just puting out my opinion.

I wouldnt be opposed to a 1 hour long timelock on all Command Roles of the ship.
Allows any new player a quick introduction to whatever they desire their first round while not locking them out from trying whatever they wish the second.
