Knowing marines, sure yeah. There’s a difference between that and abandoning your squad so you and the marine can Rambo. It was a huge problem, back then. People would totally abandon their squads, and only speak to their buddies. They wouldn’t listen to command, wouldn’t listen to their squad, nor would they care. They would metagame, they would powergame, and they could do it a lot easier because usually they’d have people in all different roles all over the ship. Because of this squad cohesion was never a thing, most marines felt excluded, and many players just left because they felt like because they weren’t in those metagroups they weren’t allowed.
But that’s just the tip of the iceberg. The main issue was the toxicity and the superiority complexes that these squads fostered. They rarely let people into their groups and just absolutely shit on the new players. And because some people in the staff team were a part of these groups nothing was done until a staff purge happened and rules were added to stop it. Even then you got groups forming that hid from the forums and secretly metacommed. What your advocating is essentially allowing this toxic shit to happen. I left CM for a year from the summer of 2015 to the next summer because of these groups. Many new players just didn’t play. And if this is allowed to happen the same shit is gonna go down.
