I'd rather have a shit squad leader and a cohesive squad than a shit squad leader and a shit squad. May just be ten years of ArmA with a tactical community talking, but nothing is worse than the smart-asses breaking what little teamwork a PUG tries to develop. They even get mention in "No Guts No Glory", a Sabre-pilot's guide to 50's air combat.
"You may as well face the fact that all your people will not be as aggressive as you would like. You can count on about three, if you are fortunate, of your pilots in the Squadron to possess those things necessary to be exceptional leaders and produce more than an occasional kill or two. There will be a secondary group, both wingmen and element leaders, that want to do the job but don't have the experience yet to do it. You will be blessed with a third group, relatively few in number, that will not do the job regardless of the instruction offered them. These, unfortunately, are frequently highly experienced personnel and have the capacity to poison your young pilots just beginning their tour of combat. These "pseudo leaders" are the people you must weed out. To "tide" these along is the greatest mistake a Commander can make." - Frederick C. Blesse, Major General, USAF (Ret).
Small-unit tactics and small-unit psychology persist across the spectrum of military affairs. I trust twelve men with college degrees fighting at Mach .9 is no less a crucible of warriors' souls than 2D Spess Murheens.
Now, let me add that truly bad leaders are those who are both inexperienced and unwilling to listen to good judgments, be they from higher or lower in the chain of command. However it is not needed for good judgement to be rendered as sarcastic and combative badgering. It is one thing to suggest or state, it is another to snark.

In line with Nikov and in continuation I'd love our spess mahreens to respect authority and show discipline a tiny bit more.
Even if that authority is underwhelming.
At least, up to a point.

The researcher can make grenades for the marines along with helping out medbay by creating stuff like bluespace beakers (but that requires the damned marines getting diamond). Whenever I am researcher (once the ship learns about the alien menace) I create very large explosive grenades and poly acid smoke grenades for the marines.
