After playing a round as queen, I think the current risk/reward is appropiate.
When I play queen, I am aggressive with my screams. I generally either set up traps for attacking marines (all my rooms are scream sized) or wait for an oppurtunity to assault a marine defensive position so I can drop a group and allow carriers/runners/ravagers/crushers to swarm in.
However, I rarely leave the base except when we're doing a full hive assault. My early game is spent directing the efforts of the xeno team, pumping out eggs and jelly.
The strategy is effective, and I have now had 3 major, 1 minor victory as queen and zero losses. I've lost with other castes, of course.
From one perspective, the queen is like an insect queen. From another, the alpha in a pack of predators.
I find the most effective way is to combine both aspects. I still have a lot of learning to do, but I understand the caste.
I don't think marines retreating is the problem, and I think the queen should play a role in major assualts.
For me, disrupting the hivemind on my death would be a minor penalty when I play queen, as I rarely die. I would be massively annoying for when I have to deal with the frequent unrobust queens.
Last match I tried to coach the current queen, who was dead set on creating a forward base, despite me urging her to reconsider. She died predictibly in an OB, and I had waited 20 minutes after my jelly completed so I could take over as queen and lead the hive to victory, probably screeching a dozen times or more to distrupt the marine team.
I would've liked to end the round earlier, but a bad queen early put us all behind. That meant the FOB was impressively fortified and the marines fought spendidly, forcing us to fight for every inch. I think good times were had by all.
Even if hivemind was gone without a queen, I would still screech aggressively. Plain and simple, it wins games and as long as I play smart, aggressive queen play will continue to do so.
