And I suggest it to be implemented as following.
Turn the common welder into exactly what it looks like. A welder with shielding that require no eye protection.
Mind that those are typically used by squad engineers, that actually have that welding glasses in the vendor machine.
- But make those activate the same "restricted vision" someone get when earing welding mask or googles when being used. Or place an even more restrictive effect, overlapping this with the blurred vision one of reducing the squared.
After all, at that time the character is foccusing in the small glass, and positioning himself near the welder for the protection to work for him.
And change the sprite of the industrial welder, removing the rectangle over it and making it the only welder who needs welding glasses or masks.
(As those are usually snatched from enginery by the squad engineers, this doesn't make their welding glasses useless.)
That way, the only in-game benefit will be "survivors without a mask, but with a normal welder, not getting blinded".
But actually the survivors are screwed anyway by all the other factors.
ANd using the normal welder will leave them even more exposed to an attack, if it's implemented as I suggested.
Also it will affect other characters doing the same.
Would that be a good trade?
Blindness for some seconds of very impaired vision while using the normal welder?

Re: Let welders be used without eye protection
So we have a suggestion to let all marines use welders...
And a suggestion to let all marines have insulated gloves...
Seriously are you guys just trying to slowly make every marine into an engineer, bit by bit? I mean, yeah, it's a bummer that you have to rely on the engies for welding vents and electrified grille fortresses, but that's sort of the point.

Yes please. You'll see that not every marine will even use them or bother, or be able to get one all the time simply because
they are too lazy to take advantage of it. It'll be a nice tool for the robust. +1

Re: Let welders be used without eye protection
honestly sarah had a good idea going in the welding vents thread; just create a new class of welder for marine engineers and specialists that doesnt require eye shielding. Maybe balanced by lower fuel then normal welders or normal welders carrying more fuel.
Gaze upon me,
for I have wandered deep into the ancient tombs of knowledge to which lie madness and sorrow, cleansing a path for all those who walk behind me...
...
But seriously, does uh, anyone know the way out?!
~Furthermore, I consider that Floodlights should no longer be destroyed.~

Seriously, if you can't bear to damage your eyes as a survivor, then restore that apc, hack that vendor, boom, welding helmet
