We are all the protagonist but only the protagonist sometimes. In short, the moral is don't meta by preserving your character just for the sake of trying to survive until the end of the round.

It's better to die assisting your wounded comrades or holding off xenos rather than living by pushing marines out of the way as you retreat across the river so you can die in the mess hall while making your way to the uncalled Evac shuttles ten minutes later.

Actually, just don't act like a fuckin' coward and be more willing to die if it means holding some ground or winning in the long run. I swear to God all these cowards would make you think that dyin' in the game is linked to dyin' in real life.

Now that is terrible...

Marines don't give up in the face of unwinnable odds, they lose with style. If the xenos are going to win, make them fuckin work for it. That is what a marine should do.

I think that the perfect standard is prepared for a plethora of situations, He should have atleast one tricord injectors and gauze on him, if not an entire medkit of basic first aid supplies (Found in wallvends on the sulaco), he should have spare ammo to give to his squad, he should have spare light and ration it, a blanket of light only lasts half the round, use them tactically. And he should stick to the SL/Spc like glue and support them.

Protagonist is a title given to the character whose point of view is taking place in the story, so technically, we're all protagonists since our actions affect the majority of the story.
You will never be as bad as the baldie who picked up a tactical shotgun while a hunter was pouncing on top of a CMO for 4 seconds, with his only response being to pace around before being decap'd by said hunter. Someone who can understand the situation and use a survivor's mindset. Instead of staying and holding Nexus, they escape Nexus for refuge. Instead of trying to get everyone else to follow their role or do their jobs, they fix it themselves (aka welding a floodlight). When you have to rely on everyone for YOUR survival, independence is something I'd expect to come out of atleast someone.

When I'm running SL, these are the big three, ranked in order of importance.

1. Doesn't empty their shotgun slugs into my back GOD FUCKING DAMNIT WHY
2. Doesn't fuck off to do their own thing THE VERY SECOND that the ever so fucking shiny-ass surface of their boot so much as touches the ground at the colony. Listens to my commands and actually sticks around to carry them out and ensure everyone else's wellbeing.
3. Provides the barest form of communication instead of acting like someone that gargled gorilla glue and cotton swabs soaked in antifreeze. Even the faintest "Yes" "No" or "Understood" is preferable to NOT KNOWING IF YOUR SQUAD IS EVEN ALIVE BECAUSE THEY'RE ALL MUTE.
I play as this guy, proudly being dismembered by extraterrestrials since 2015.
Sometimes I might play other guys, you never know.

You do realize this is for standards, not squad mates in general, right?

If Standards welded floodlights, that would be metagaming. If they "escape Nexus for refuge" despite having orders to hold their ground, that is disobeying an order. Being able to rely on yourself is useful and all, but when you are in the squad, you have to learn that there is no I in squad.

From what I've played I'd say as long as they follow orders, aim for chest, don't use AP, and DON'T push engineers/medics when they're building/treating people, they're a pretty perfect standard. They don't need to be godly robust, they just have to be a team player.

-don't take all the ap in the marine vendor
-don't chases anything that runs into the dark
-don't yell when he don't gets his way
-follows orders
-helps marines
-isn't a retard and cover engis and medics if they need it

They stick with the SL, don't wander off, consider others above themselfs (Packing specs extra ammo, or bringing flarebags with medical supplies), and not hogging AP. Dont forget listening too.

I don't think following orders make a good standard. As grunt you often sometimes have baldies SL, or just relatively new players derping around doing what they think is right. It translate by useless orders and general retardation. This one guy will order your whole squad to line up in front of him while the FOB is under attack and other squads could use assistance, or this other one will send you to certain death in that one hallway of xenorape called North east caves entrance instead of trying to be smart about it, while this third specimen will have you stand in hydro while the whole hive descend on you because "command told us to hold hydro".

If I had to add something to what's being said, I'd say a good standard know when to follow orders and when to ignore them.
Reading all what you wrote, and don't actually think I'm a good standard, but then, maybe if you lowered your standards a bit i would be. :^)

Personally, my big ones are doesn't use AP for no reason, FF's as little as humanly possible and shakes me up instead of removing the damn hugger and breaking my damn skull, but then again, I don't play SL. Protecting engis/SL/medics and evacing casualties and bodies is also on there.

Well the main thing to remember is yes you are a grunt meant for following orders, but if you find something better to do than your current orders, such as protecting a Medic, Engie or just helping people move supplies around or dismantle things, go for it, if your squad lead yells at you, tell him what you're doing and if he lets you continue, continue as necessar, otherwise report back to your squad.

To sum it up, you've got orders, but you've also got common sense, as Ramon mentioned in his explanation.

The best standard is a standard that is willing to learn, and most importantly willing to listen. An adaptable and smart standard who can contribute to squad discussion is better than a follows-orders-only standard, though both are much better than those who don't do either.
Note: For clarification on "adaptable", a standard shouldn't be able to replace a medic or engineer.

1) Follows orders
2) has trigger discipline
3) Is properly kitted

Literally the only things you need to do to be a boon to your team as standard.
