Whitelist the Corporate Liason

Post by Sad_Corn » 05 Dec 2016, 11:13

Summary (a quick, 2-3 sentence summary):

Create a Whitelist on forums to the Corporate Liason

Benefits (How this will benefit the server and game as a whole):

Well, first thing: CL isn't essential to the round. CL is mostly a RP based role, to improve the entire RP of Sulaco, nothing else at all. If a PMC squad comes and Sulaco doesn't have a CL, they will obey the CO, and coordinate the PMC's is usually the most important function of the CL, when it's about killing xenos. So if the role isn't important to the server at all, why let it open to a inexperienced player to act as antagg and just harass the entire crew thinking that's cool? Allow only good Role players to be a CL is the best thing to the server.

Details (Description of how you think this would work, the benefits, etc):

Just create a forum thread to players that actually want to RP as CL apply, with some basic questions to detect if they only want to receive cool objectives from W-Y to antag, or actually fax W-Y with all the information, not waiting for a response. I still thinking on the questions, but i'll post them here soon

Implementation (Optional, if you have an idea how to implement it):

magic (Just the same thing to whitelist preds)
On May 17, 2016, a group of farmers dug up the diary of an ear of corn named Watson. Here are his entries.

Day 76:
They took Lawrence, dear god Lawrence... They ripped him off the stalk and smeared him in butter, just like Tyler and Jodie. They shipped him off to the popcorn factory...
I wonder what his wife will say.

Day 120: My brother says the VEGANS are protesting for more anti-meat bullshit. They want more of us to die. FUCKING HEATHENS.

Day 153: The ants are eating me from the inside out. They are popping out my kernels and taking them back to the nest. I feel them moving inside me. Julia says the pesticides will end our misery.

Day 300: Sweet Release. I can hear the planes flying over now. They are dropping the gas, it feels so good, sweet release-

What would be the benefits of being whitelisted?

Less people self antagging, more priority from staff to respond faxes. More players with RP knowledge

Ah i understand, i'm giving a +1

However all those things can be achieved if you play CL as a known CM player by the staff (usually because a High forum activity) but it would be cool to actually ADD some objectives as CL such like:

1) Bring proof of alien life on LV-624
2) Escape on the shuttle alive

Just like traitor objs work. I think it would keep the SSD CL'S to a minimum

Well, the staff is usually busy with something or is playing as alien/marine, so no time to answer the CL faxes (nothing wrong with that, they have more important things to do). But whitelisting the CL would cut those idiots that think "CL is antagg, i must annoy the CO much as i can and fuck with the OP"

Alright like it was said by Feweh in a previous post, it ISN'T hard to get staff to reply to you as CL but it IS extremely easy to turn staff away from answering the faxes.

Pro tips:
-Spell correctly.
-Format the paper properly, we have a CL fax format.
-Be interesting by sounding like you know what is going on.
-Say something different, staff see the same exact CL reports every round. Make yours stand out a little.
-Start the round off by sending a fax, it shows you care about playing CL.
-Don't end EVERY fax with "awaiting further orders".

As for the topic itself though, the CL position is unique. It has no underlings or any true superiors so there is no room to learn how playing CL goes.

Due to this, I am going to have to say -1

It's kinda hard to say something different when every round follows the same recipe, always

Actually I think this is a good idea.

The major concerns with CL, responding to them, to me is.

- Their report is properly formatted and spell/grammar checked.
- They do their job of reporting on the situation
- They are able to give things to the company before asking for the company to give things to them
- They have a degree of autonomy and don't need direct instruction to do anything but sit in their office

If CL was whitelisted, I'd be much more willing to trust them with frequent responses and objectives (antag or no) because I know they will play it responsibly.

+1

Honestly, being a Liaison isn't the most fun experience.

Even when you do have good formatting, sometimes staff just ignore you anyways because they can't think of anything to do, or there is no one able to really do much with it. Mentors can't do much at all, and no doubt admins are often forbidden to do much unless permitted by high ranking staff.

Really, the only time it is enjoyable is when head staff reply to a fax, because they have the freedom/power to do more with it than making them simply collect alien samples.

On its own, it is a very, VERY dull job. You can't mend people like a doctor, can't conduct repairs and sanitation duties as an MT, can't haul crates of supplies about as a CT.. Even MPs have more to do than a CL, since if they aren't enforcing the law, they are helping around the ship in one way or another.

Liaisons are just some random joe that the marines ignore 90% of the time, refusing to do even the most basic request for them. They lack the skill to do much else other than their ability to nag the marines.

I doubt whitelisting will do much to fix the problem, but at least it'll ensure that only those who are willing to take up such a role are able to be selected, rather than some poor random player who gets thrust into it and forced to make do.
Sometimes, bravery comes from the most unlikely sources.

+1, coming from someone who really loves playing Liaison quite often, I feel like whitelisting would help keep those who really do enjoy playing it, to keep playing it. Sometimes, people just pick it just to self-antag, for a funny moment.

Again, +1.

I play Liaison mostly on the Ice Map, and enjoy the ability and freedom they have to create their own roleplay.

+1 to make self-antag CL's less likely.

Problem is the only fun I have had was when CL's self antagged, aka they started up a mutiny to take over the ship due to WY wanting the xeno samples AND no info of it getting out into the known universe.

Otherwise, as stated, admins are severely restricted from making any fun unless its the higher staff like Manager +, so making faxes is absolutely useless and a time sink that could be better used bribing cooperative marines onto your side to do your bidding.

If someone is self antagging as the CL, they will be facing a jobban and possible ban.

Oh hey, I didn't -1 this yet, but I still see the value of that suggestion! ... ... ... Neutral, but if it pass I'd like CLs to be more admin-interactive (AKA: Whitelisted CLs get more admin-interventions when asked for more eventful rounds)... Otherwise I'm entirely -1 over it.
CM was obviously inspired by Starcraft: Ghost opening. At least when marines takes too long to deploy.

Then the job is pretty pointless then.

With rounds being the same almost every round, you can't make a fax that "appeals" to the admins.

And if you do, all you get is "collect X samples" which gets boring after a few rounds.

So your better off just waiting until Head Staff is on to play CL or else you won't be doing anything interesting / game changing.

The issue is and has always been lazy admins who see the faxes, they know they should be answering the faxes, and don't answer the faxes. Mostly it's due to a lack of creativity but often it's just general laziness; don't say it's because you're busy because the faxes get ignored when nothing is happening, too. The CL job was supposed to be the admin's window into the game so they can affect it more smoothly than direct intervention, but instead of being creative or interesting with it, admins who are used to their job being a police-only role don't seem to realize that the CL job is their one outlet for some spontaneity or excitement or RP. Probably because admins on CM are only police roles and not RP roles at all. I expected going into Alpha that, as a medium RP server, admins would be responsible for maintaining RP, and instead they turned out to be responsible generally only for anti-griefing. Pretty disappointing.

There have been a lot of creative CLs but very few creative people answering them, and that basically made the job into one everyone ignores.

I've played CL maybe....3 times in the past with other characters? I've either been ignored, or had my round ruined by power trippy Marines/MP's looking to "best the company dude".

-1, I don't see how this will really do much for the role, as what Snype said, anyone self antaging is job banned.

If I'm honest, it's not that the Corporate Liaison, doesn't need a Whitelist, it's the fact the Corporate Liason, doesn't have anything to actually do. Even if you're freaking like a god at being creative, it's literally only based on chance that you get a chance to do anything really, because it's the Admins responding, or mods, not anyone else, if anything there should be a Whitelist to be the actual Weyland Corporation, and it's a BIG responsibility, like when the Active CL sends in a Fax, you'd get notification if you have the Whitelist, and then you can reply to it, and this is what you apply for, not the CL. The only reason people are Self-Antagging because they don't have an objective as the CL, so they don't know whether or not if they can be what the Weyland-Yutani Corporation truly is, a bunch of sleazy, manipulative, con-artists that will do anything to make themselves wealthy.
-1 in all honesty.

Make a Whitelist for the Weyland-Yutani Corporation Responder, not the CL, because it's not a interesting enough role that literally changes the outcome of the game.

I don't know about this. The CL is the primary job for roleplaying, and the main opportunity to show off your RP chops and improve on them - whitelisting it to those who are known for being good roleplayers when there are few other jobs that allow/encourage it doesn't seem to be that great of an idea, since there would be few opportunities to prove your potential. Neutral leaning towards -1.

I don't think this is going to happen. We are, however, looking at ways to make this a more appealing role to play. Denied for now.
