Radio backpack

Post by Farya » 10 Jan 2017, 12:58

Summary (a quick, 2-3 sentence summary): We have medics, engineers, guys with big guns, crazed lads with melee stuff, snipers but what about a humble radio guy? They guy who provides a stable radio connection with Sulaco and other marines? RO would have like 2-4 that backpack radios which allows to speak over every or almost every availible channel regardless of comms status. And maybe even work as relay for nearby marines headsets - if the guy with radio is nearby all marines around would have comms even when communication center is dead.

Benefits (How this will benefit the server and game as a whole):
Would give marines more coordination, would give standart marines some more things to do beside shooting each other. Muh immershun.

Details (Description of how you think this would work, the benefits, etc):
There would be at least one marine in squad who can always have a stable radio and who will work as relay between squad and the rest of marines. It would be neat of SL could be able to come to that marine, grab a handset attached to backpack and speak into it while radio guy stands still and cover him.

+1 if it allows comms to work despite the equipment on Sulaco being disabled. Aliens knowing how to target the radios? Come on, man. The rule against beelining for it is basically "yes, you can meta target telecomms, just don't make it obvious"

Its a nice addition, I would support this and actually had been tossing around the idea for awhile. I don't think, lore-wise, the headsets the marines were using could reach the Sulaco so having a high powered addition is certainly cool.

I would love the idea of a 'radio man' (an RTO, or a Forward Observer) being included into the squad.
I'm stressing way too hard about what to put here, so I'm just gonna leave it blank.... or....

I personally alway's wanted such a thing since it would probably improve squad gameplay. But depending on how this is implimented it might take reworking a good amount of tcomms. +1 though

I think this would be a pretty great add on to increase the support utility of standard marines +1

I suggested something like this a LOOOONG time ago, back on my old still active account, but it was denied for having no reason.

But now, on the Ice Map? Playing SL on Ice Colony makes me want to turn to liquor IRL. Round start, there's no Comms and I lose my entire fucking squad, and then later in the round when aliens keep lol-slashing Comms APC, I lose Comms AGAIN, and have to treck my happy ginger ass through the snow to fix it.

The radio should work like this:

Dunno if this is possible, but I think it'd be amazing on Ice Colony, and even LV if we decide to make Comms a physical thing on that map too.

Also small addition. We already have broken headset headgear as loadout option. What if it would be reworked as part of that radio gear? Whiсh needs to be worn instead of helmet or OVER helmet to make that radio work.
And I have two ideas about that radio working

1) Its always worn on the baсk and there is no need to remove it from the baсk.
2) Only some(usualy short ranged) funсtions are availible to use when its worn on the baсk. It needs to be taken off and deployed on the ground to provide long range(Ground to Sulaсo) сommuniсation or to provide relay for headsets when сomms down.
3) Its need to be deployed at any time you wish to use it. So radio guy have to stop in somewhat safe spot сovered from spits and сhargers, deploy his radio and then use it.

Also what about taking off some or all beaсom funсtions from SL and giving them to radio guy? Like ability to сall down and then pinpoint bombardment from Sulaсo? Should we inсlude binoсular in set to allow radio guy to work as spotter for sniper and SADAR speсs?

+1.....I reckon they ought to make I mean technically radio man third next in command? Not good with ranks but...wouldn't they? Maybe make em Lance corporal or whatever is higher than that. (Correct if I am wrong) I'd love this RPing call signs and calling for support or having SL do so.

Nah. Maybe the SL's get a special backpack that works like a mobile Tele-Communication hot spot.

Well, looks like some people would like the "radio-man" role. I would give 1+ just because of them, otherwise, there would be no need for this job. Kind that It still without a need but, Democracy.

+1 I really, really like this idea. As telecoms hubs would likely be a target for enemy factions, these gentlemen would circumvent it.

They'd introduce some more elements of RP, encourage MORE squad mechanics (which is what we all want to see)

More squad roles for marines is always welcome. But if we would make "sparks" marine as standalone class(which is not bad) then what equipment along with radio he would have? What exact rank and responsibilities? Can grunt be assigned as one in case original radioman is dead? Independent class would also mean that nobody but him and SL would have knowledge to use that radio. So if both SL and that guy dead...
We could also just give radio to one of the two engineers. There is only one sentry for both anyway so one of them could take radio instead. Two engineer at one senty nest is usually overkill anyway. They just have nothing to do.

I mean, adding another role wouldn't be a... /bad/ idea, but I think it would make more sense to just have the SL, you know the guy issuing orders and Commands to carry the radio.

Because SL already have enough responsibilities and unique gear. And SL is a frontline leader which is already hard. You have marines shooting each other, there are aliens running around and trying to kill you, there are screams over comms. And of course aliens will always target SL first. With designated radioman its much easier - SL can coordinate squad and issue orders without any distraction while guy with radio sit somewhere nearby but far enought from the heat establishing hotline with command/other squads and bothered only with talking/keeping radio working. While out of combat SL can delegate supply request responsibility to radio guy too. Instead of directly bugging RO for supplies SL will order radioman to do so. And use now free time for something more important like checking out squad and coordinating engineers and medics.

And of course there are always grunts bored with doing nothing outside shooting. There are two medics and two engineers maximum per squad. And only ONE spec. That guys have most of the fun most of the time while grunts can only be lucky enough to get some neat attachements or machete from RO.

I do agree it would free up some responsibilities for the SLs in the field, and it would certainly also help the marines out if they keep the designated radio operator for their squad or any of them alive, as just one of them could relay requests or status in the event any SL goes down, and the acting commanding officer for that squad or whichever teams of the squad's marines are present can still communicate their status to command. Whilst this might paint them as a target for the aliens, don't believe their radio operators should travel out too far from either the squad, or Forward operating base.

It would however mean the marines have to be very careful about keeping them alongside other trained personal alive in the field, but at the same time it does give them a benefit if being kept alive, as their usefulness and expertise still is around. They likely would be one of the marine lifelines really in the event of being implemented, yet feel they shouldn't be too fair up close to the actual combat as they're more important as one of the marine's utilities for support to whom knows.

Regardless do like the idea around it, alongside what it could do if/when implemented, uncertain how long or whether this may go in due to the mention of telecoms needing to be reworked. But do support the idea for this to be implemented. +1

The first paragraph only really helps with my stance... People screaming over Comms. Whatever? Leads need to deal with panicking marines. At the start of the round, there is no Comms, so they need a way to communicate with their Squad.

Late round...? Okay, I can SEE the use. Either way, I support this suggestion.

+1, and then when comms on Shiva's Snowball are disabled you'll still be able to communicate with command.

I reaaaally like this idea.

If comms are down, we need a backup plan so we can still keep in touch with each other. I hate not being able to keep my squad in touch, and would gladly trade out a backpack and all her inventory slots if it meant being able to keep the squad coordinated.

The fact that VIDEO DATA can be sent to the sulaco but not sound is ridiculous. Radio operator as a squad role is cool. All it would need is a single dedicated vendor, similar to SPC vendors, and each Radio Operator spawns with a coin to slot into the vendor.
