Pixiestik - Moderator Application
Byond ID: Pixiestik
Colonial Marines Character: Anne 'Shaky' Caudill
Age: 27
Gender: Female
Timezone: Eastern Time Zone
On average, how many hours are you available per week to moderate? 30 hours
Do you have any previous experience in being staff (not just SS13)? I was a mod on Runescape years ago and was a Guild Officer and later Raid Leader on World of Warcraft for a guild of 100+
Did you play any of the previous Colonial Marine servers? No
What other servers do you play on? Yogstation, Fallout 13, Hippiestation
What are the 3 biggest servers you play on besides CM? Yogstation, Fallout 13
Have you had an application to Colonial Marines before? No
Are you currently a staff member elsewhere (not just SS13)? If so, where? No
Have you ever been banned for more than 24 hours on Colonial Marines? I don't think so
Have you ever been banned for more than 24 hours on ANY server? If so, where and When (roughly)? Yes, it was October of 2015 on Paradise Station. I have a permanent ban on there for griefing. I killed someone and got a well deserved permanent ban. It was stupid and I regret ruining someone's round over it.
Are you familiar with the chat program Slack (its use is required)? No
Common Staff Situations:
Write a description of what you would do in each situation (BELOW) the situation. If you start it on the same line, I'll assume you can't follow directions and auto-decline your application.
1. A player is firing his weapon in the briefing area near the start of the round.
I would freeze the player and look at the logs and the situation. I would tell the other players around him to not mess with the player because I am investigating what happened. I would PM the player and ask them what happened. If it the weapon went off by accident, I would let them off with a warning. If they were griefing, I would give them a short ban or a longer ban based on their notes and the situation.
2. The Sulaco has a breach to space.
If it was caused by the Vindicator or the Rasputin crashing into the Sulaco, I would just leave the breach be and ignore it. If it was caused by a marine either blowing up a window with a grenade or a bullet as a result of combat and it wasn't intentional, I would ignore it as well. If it was an intentional breach meant to grief, I would look at the logs to see what caused the breach and message any players who may have seen what happened. I would send a message through OOC encouraging anyone responsible to confess. If they did, I would be more lenient. After gathering all of the information that I could, I would decide on a short ban or a long ban based on the evidence and the notes of the players who were responsible.
3. The marines want the nuke codes because they claim they are losing too many marines. There are currently 4 aliens and 20 marines in your /who.
I would tell the marines that the nuke codes are a last resort and that I can't give it to them based on the number of marines and aliens. I would then encourage the marines to go back down to the planet.
4. A Sulaco researcher has made several napalm grenades and hands them out to marines. One of the marines throws the grenade into Logistics. There are no admins or other moderators online.
I would look at the logs to see what happened as there might have been a reason that he threw it. If there wasn't I would PM the player and ask him why he threw the grenade. If it was accidental, I would let him off with a warning. If it was intentional, I would give a warning or a short ban depending on their notes. The punishment would also depend on if anyone got injured or killed from it. I would then PM the researcher and warn them to be more careful in the future about giving grenades to random marines.
5. A played is starting to talk about the things he did with your mom last night over Ahelp.
I would just ignore it honestly. If I were talking to a player about some sort of problem they were involved with in the round, I would just keep talking to them about the problem and ignore it as well.
6. You notice a marine with a name that doesn't fit our naming rules.
I would PM them and tell them that their name is against this server's rules. I would then manually change it and make a note of it.
6a. The marine is arguing that: They've used the name for several years, no one has told them to change it before, and that they didn't know it was a rule.
I would tell them that ignorance of the rules doesn't mean that they get to ignore the rules. I would tell them that they need to read the rules so they don't break any more rules. I would then manually change their name and make a note of it.
7. You see a Sulaco Doctor with an M41A rifle strapped to his back running around the briefing area. There are wounded in medbay, and the other doctor is in surgery.
I would PM the doctor and ask them why they have a rifle strapped to their back as the rules state that they are not allowed to carry a gun bigger than a pistol unless there is a threat of some kind. I would tell them to put the gun down. I would then encourage them to go back to medbay as they are a doctor and not a marine. I would warn them not to do it again.
8. You see a Squad Medic performing surgery on the planet. He claims it was because there were no doctors in the FOB.
I would tell them that the rules clearly state that Squad Medics are not allowed to do surgery. I would tell the Squad Medic to close the person up that he/she is working on so the patient won't bleed to death and to put the person on the Rasputin so they can get the surgery that they need. I would let them off with a warning unless there was a pattern of this kind of behavior in their notes.
9. The round is stagnating. There are 30 marines and 4 aliens. The marines won't leave the Sulaco, and the aliens won't attack. What would you do, to "encourage" the sides to engage each other?
I would probably use a Mother report to encourage the marines to attack as they have superior numbers. I would also subtly encourage the aliens to take some sort of action and to not stall the round out any longer.
10. The round ends, and a marine starts unloading his weapons on other marines.
I would give them a 3 hour ban with no warning. The player should know better as it is in the rules and ignorance of the rules isn't an excuse.
11. A marine who has recently awoken is using soap to slip other marines.
I would just let it play out especially if I thought it was some sort of role play. If they kept doing it and it was disrupting the round, I would PM the player and tell them to stop slipping people with soap.
12. A marine has killed another marine. When you ask him why, he said it was because the other marine had punched him.
I would look at the logs to get any evidence I could from it. I would question both parties involved to see what happened. If it was a role play situation, I would just let it be a IC issue. If it was that one player punched the other and the second shot him, I would punish the second player because there was no reason to escalate like that. I would give them whatever kind of ban I thought was fitting based on their notes.
Any additional information you'd like to add?
I apologize if I have forgotten anything. I have tried to answer all of these questions to the best of my ability. I understand if my history knocks me out of the position at this time. If it does, I have no one to blame but myself. I would just like everyone to know that if I am given a chance, that I would do the best job that I can. Thank you for taking the time to read this and I will answer any other questions that you guys might have.

I'll do a more in depth analysis (I won't) on your answers in a minute, but the first thing I notice is the account age and post number. That doesn't really look good so far.

Overall I will give you a +1 but I can see others having issues with your forum activity but you seem to be quite an active player ingame.
The only few complaints I have with your app would be these
The only few complaints I have with your app would be these
- You generally don't freeze a player unless you really have to, ie you know for sure it was griefing
- I believe you fix all breaches besides one caused by crash landings, SM & pred bombs even if it was due to marines being idiots...
- Moderators will never tell marines the nuke codes (even though we technically have them), those can only be provided by a head
- Looking at logs is preferable but at times, it takes a while to skim through them so direct pms might be the your main course of action especially for question 1 (by that I mean actual logs not the vv attack log section)
- Might want to note the player from 6a about how they respond (also mods can't change names, only admins+ can)

Freezing may be too much if there is no victims

Very nice

Good

Maybe here an ahelp mute and a note for behavior, but all good

We cant actually change it,we just remind them to change, but good

Same as 6

Perfect
11. A marine who has recently awoken is using soap to slip other marines.
Good,it becomes an issue when it gets someone killed
12. A marine has killed another marine. When you ask him why, he said it was because the other marine had punched him.
And healing the victim of the shooting, this one is kinda lacking

Edit, Another mod informed me of your actual play time. +1 as everyone else has said.

Here's a harder question for you.
You log onto the server and notice the round timer has only ticked over to 30 minute marker, Marines have pushed the caves and all but wiped out the entire xeno team barring 1 or 2 remaining xenos (1 Runner and 1 Queen). When you question afew of the ghosts they all say that the CO (Note it is a proper CO) incited to the marines to push the caves because there was 1 runner who got spotted about 3 minutes into landing. When you question the CO he says the SL was the one to incite the metarush.
Notes:

Random McCO
Admin backup is there but they will take atleast 20 minutes to arrive.
Explain Investigation Process, Who would be banned/jobbanned/warned. For extra credit explain IF you had the powers to, what would you do fix the scenario and salvage the round for BOTH sides.
I also understand that this question is extremely difficult and that the scenario is very much unlikely to happen.

Re: Pixiestik - Moderator Application
After reading the notes of the two players who are involved, I feel like both of them have a good chance to be guilty here. Also I would keep in mind that it is possible that the SL may not tell the truth based off of his notes. I'm not going to make any judgements based off of that but I will keep it in mind as I investigate what happened. I would send a message in OOC for the marines to get back across the river. That would give me some time to look into what happened.freemysoul wrote:Here's a harder question for you.

I would question the SL and ask him for his side of the story. Like I said above though, I wouldn't put too much stock into what he had to say based off of his previous lying. That way, I can have a better idea of what happened. Based off of the evidence I would have at this point, I would probably suspect that the CO was guilty based off of the responses from the people who are ghosted and would keep that in the back of my mind.
I would start looking into the logs. I would be looking for some sort of evidence of either the CO or the SL telling the marines to go across the river. I would imagine that there would likely be some sort of proof of it in the logs somewhere. If I couldn't find any evidence of either of them ordering the marines to go across the river, I would try to find some combat logs. If I found that the SL had some combat logs early into the round, I would suspect that it was probably him.
After I had gathered my evidence, then I would start sorting this situation out. If the CO was the one to order it, I would PM him and tell him that as a CO that he should know that ordering a meta rush is against the rules and that they should know that. I would tell them as a CO that they are held to a high standard and that what he did is unacceptable. I would hand out a short ban and make a note of it in their notes. I would imagine after that this CO would get a job ban. I would message the SL and tell them that while I understand that they were following orders, that they should know that a meta rush is against the rules. I would let them off with a warning and tell them next time they break the rules they will get a ban. I would then announce in OOC that the situation has been resolved and to not cross the river in the future without there being a clear sustained threat and evidence that the aliens were across the river and that a meta rush is against the rules.
If it was the the SL who ordered it, I would message them and tell them that what they did is against the rules. Based off of their previous notes, I would think about giving them a short ban. I would make a note of it in their notes. Just like in the last paragraph, I would tell the players in OOC that what they did was against the rules and to not do it again in the future.
What I would do to fix the round if I had the power is a tough one. I have been trying to come up with a good solution, but it's tough. I don't think there is anything that I could do that could completely salvage the round. I think the thing that I would do is I would spawn in some aliens and tell the players in OOC that I am spawning in some aliens that the ghosted players can spawn into. I think that might even things up. This was the best solution I could come up with.

Re: Pixiestik - Moderator Application
This is a good answer And is fairly padded out, It includes a decent investigation process and meet all the Criteria I put in play. The only minor detail missing, is if you had actually put down the time for the bans rather than just a short ban.
Overall you show good investigation skills, good interest and timely manners +1
As stated Maurovega, Never forget to note, The more detailed the note/ban reason, the better we can adapt to the player in question.
