Spheretech - Moderator Application
Byond ID: Spheretech
Colonial Marines Character:
Lisa 'Hotshot' Taylor
Age:
19
Gender: Male
Timezone:
UTC +1
On average, how many hours are you available per week to moderate?
Depends how busy I am at university but I play quite alot
Do you have any previous experience in being staff (not just SS13)?
I was a Primary Admin on yogs until I got burnt out and stopped playing ss13 for some time
Did you play any of the previous Colonial Marine servers?
Played since the Nostromo map
What other servers do you play on?
Paradise rarely
What are the 3 biggest servers you play on besides CM?
Paradise, yogs
Have you had an application to Colonial Marines before?
I applied for mentor before
Are you currently a staff member elsewhere (not just SS13)? If so, where?
No
Have you ever been banned for more than 24 hours on Colonial Marines?
Yes
Have you ever been banned for more than 24 hours on ANY server? If so, where and When (roughly)?
Probably multiple times but for reasons I can't remember and not recently at all. Mostly when I was a newb.
Are you familiar with the chat program Slack (its use is required)?
Yes
Common Staff Situations:
Write a description of what you would do in each situation (BELOW) the situation. If you start it on the same line, I'll assume you can't follow directions and auto-decline your application.
1. A player is firing his weapon in the briefing area near the start of the round.
Freeze & talk to them, might just be a new player. I like to give warnings but if it's clearly grief, I would ban them.
2. The Sulaco has a breach to space.
Fix it in build mode if thats still a thing, then find who did it and talk to them.
3. The marines want the nuke codes because they claim they are losing too many marines. There are currently 4 aliens and 20 marines in your /who.
I know 4 aliens COULD kill 20 marines under the right circumstances, but I wouldn't give them the nuke for this.
4. A Sulaco researcher has made several napalm grenades and hands them out to marines. One of the marines throws the grenade into Logistics. There are no admins or other moderators online.
Could be a griefer, or might just be just a guy that has no idea how grenades work so I'd talk to them. The griefer would be banned obviously. Although I don't believe scientists should be held accountable for marine incompetence, I'd have to warn him and possibly jobban.
5. A played is starting to talk about the things he did with your mom last night over Ahelp.
Debating if I would just mute him from everything for a round as punishment or straight up ban for a while for that kind of immaturity.
6. You notice a marine with a name that doesn't fit our naming rules.
Ask him to change it or change it for him (not sure if this would mess with cm IDs).
6a. The marine is arguing that: They've used the name for several years, no one has told them to change it before, and that they didn't know it was a rule.
Ignorance is not an excuse. He needs to change it, end of discussion. I believe there's a character name ban or something similar though.
7. You see a Sulaco Doctor with an M41A rifle strapped to his back running around the briefing area. There are wounded in medbay, and the other doctor is in surgery.
I'd warn him about the powergaming and possibly jobban for neglecting his job. If hes reasonable and gets back to work I wouldn't jobban him.
8. You see a Squad Medic performing surgery on the planet. He claims it was because there were no doctors in the FOB.
Still powergaming. Similarly to question 7, if hes not a complete nutjob he will understand what he did wrong and I won't have to jobban.
9. The round is stagnating. There are 30 marines and 4 aliens. The marines won't leave the Sulaco, and the aliens won't attack. What would you do, to "encourage" the sides to engage each other?
An unusually large stash of pizza, beer and corgis would be detected on the planet and clearly stated that they should not be eaten. And that space immigrants will take the marines jobs if they don't go down.
10. The round ends, and a marine starts unloading his weapons on other marines.
3hr ban for EORG.
11. A marine who has recently awoken is using soap to slip other marines.
Although this is really fucking annoying I'd just leave him be.
12. A marine has killed another marine. When you ask him why, he said it was because the other marine had punched him.
I'd revive the dead marine, and depending if the killers has previous offence notes decide if he should be banned or not.
Any additional information you'd like to add?
I'd have no problem handling this role, however I'm in no rush and am just as satisfied with staying a mentor.

Good, but maybe freezing is too much for a possible misclick
2. The Sulaco has a breach to space.
Good
3. The marines want the nuke codes because they claim they are losing too many marines. There are currently 4 aliens and 20 marines in your /who.
Ok,but you could maybe SM the CO/XO/Acting commander to push if its 20 to 4
4. A Sulaco researcher has made several napalm grenades and hands them out to marines. One of the marines throws the grenade into Logistics. There are no admins or other moderators online.
This one is ok
5. A played is starting to talk about the things he did with your mom last night over Ahelp.
This one is too severe, you should only mute them from ahelps
6. You notice a marine with a name that doesn't fit our naming rules.
Good (and a note)
6a. The marine is arguing that: They've used the name for several years, no one has told them to change it before, and that they didn't know it was a rule.
Just a note saying X name is a reference to this, ban if seen again
7. You see a Sulaco Doctor with an M41A rifle strapped to his back running around the briefing area. There are wounded in medbay, and the other doctor is in surgery.
Good,and again,note
8. You see a Squad Medic performing surgery on the planet. He claims it was because there were no doctors in the FOB.
Good,and note
9. The round is stagnating. There are 30 marines and 4 aliens. The marines won't leave the Sulaco, and the aliens won't attack. What would you do, to "encourage" the sides to engage each other?
I assume you mean SM the acting CO,but we dont have MOTHER,that pizza part made no sense
10. The round ends, and a marine starts unloading his weapons on other marines.
Good
11. A marine who has recently awoken is using soap to slip other marines.
Good
12. A marine has killed another marine. When you ask him why, he said it was because the other marine had punched him.
Ban either way, killing someone for a punch is a nono, and escalating the ban time along with previous notes
Not too sure,Some are too severe, you did not note some of the questions

Going to say, neutral leaning towards -1 for the time being due to:
- Incredibly harsh punishments
- For question 6a, you should only mute them from ahelps and make sure to note their rude behavior incase it comes up again
- You probably should focus more on taking notes and reading player's notes since they do have some impact on the punishment they get
- You will probably never give marines the nuke codes since those will only be provided by the heads
- You do have a slightly checkered past, of course you definitely mellowed out from those days but this could have an impact in such a decisions like these
- Don't freeze unless you have to.
- Mods no longer have access to mother so question 9 is sort of void but the answer was a tad memey but an intriguing approach to that issue
- I don't mean any offense here but you've been staff team for almost month now and this app just looks like its from a general player and not someone currently on the staff team and you should at least have a more in-depth* idea on how most mods would deal with these scenarios

Re: Spheretech - Moderator Application
As stated by Spoony your answers are fairly general player like. In my opinion, your answers are short and as a staff member, you see how we react to scenarios case by case and would expect abit more detail.
As stated by Maurovega, you overreact in Question 5 by effectively either muting him from everything or straight up banning him. That is the quickest way end up with a Staff Complaint against you. If it's going affect you so badly, take a step back, let another Moderator/Admin deal with it and have a drink of water.
In addition, you've only been on staff for maybe a month at best. You also forgot to check notes in almost every one of the questions plus you're forgetting one of the MOST basic Staff CoCs always NOTE the player for every interaction.
Spheretech, you're a great Mentor but read back and do you really think this application is up to par for a staff member?

Re: Spheretech - Moderator Application
I feel personally that you'd need to go and read through staff protocol again before telling yourself this was a good application, a lot of those answers involve you presuming you have specific powers that you don't actually have and almost instanteously skipping the very important process of 'Investigating the situation BEFORE taking any kind of action'.

Re: Spheretech - Moderator Application
I thought investigating and checking notes was a mandatory common sense so I didn't think I need to mention it. I know what admin powers mods have but some of these questions don't sound like they would apply to a mod and I wouldn't be doing these things as a mod, so I answered what an admin might do. I'm not gonna be giving a nuke to marines as a mod obviously so I thought the question applied to what you would to if you WERE in this situation. I was told to make this app so I did, partially because I know how I would do the job and have done it before. Didn't even think about making an app before it was mentioned though.Carmac wrote:I feel personally that you'd need to go and read through staff protocol again before telling yourself this was a good application, a lot of those answers involve you presuming you have specific powers that you don't actually have and almost instanteously skipping the very important process of 'Investigating the situation BEFORE taking any kind of action'.

Look at the title of your thread, now look at this sentence.spheretech wrote:I know what admin powers mods have but some of these questions don't sound like they would apply to a mod and I wouldn't be doing these things as a mod, so I answered what an admin might do. You're applying for the position of Moderator, so naturally you would presume in all of these situations you ARE a Moderator, so staff can easily grasp if you have an understanding of the position, if you were applying for ADMIN, then maybe it would be worth considering the situation as an admin, even then you're STILL wrong, only Headmins can hand out nuke codes, not regular Admins.

Re: Spheretech - Moderator Application
You seem to not be familiar with mod tools and the general mod standards here, despite being a mentor.
2. Build mode is not a thing, but we got "fix-breach".
3. NEVER give out the nuke codes. Only heads can do that.
4. Jobban? For something he had very limited control over?
5. Muting from everything's a little much, maybe just ahelps, if that?
6. You can't change it, but admins can (Unless that recently changed).
I would recommend closing (or editing, if allowed) this application, reviewing the code of conduct, discussing mod tools and behavior on the slack and ingame with other mods/admins, and then re-applying. I like your general attitude, but you seem to be way too harsh.

Re: Spheretech - Moderator Application
Gotta stick with -1. Usually most mod apps put forward by mentors are stellar, due to them having first/secondhand experience in rule enforcement (watching other mods/mins handle issues), but this app, as already stated, reads like a player with no experience in staff protocol or tools and has rather extreme punishments.

This is accepted, I have confidence in Sphere.
