The first two - Alien and Aliens

Watch Prometheus if you want more but you don't mind everything cool about the first two movies being soiled

Watch AvP and AvPR if you don't give a shit about plot, and instead want to get drunk and watch people get fuckin' massacred by the hundreds in extra fun ways by both aliens and predators. Make sure to turn your brightness up for AvPR though, it's too dark to see shit in that movie
I play as this guy, proudly being dismembered by extraterrestrials since 2015.
Sometimes I might play other guys, you never know.

I would recommend watching Alien, Aliens and Alien 3.

People diss Alien 3 but I think its a fine film, it introduces several concepts to the Alien universe that even we use (WY Commandos, Runners, Human (maybe) Bishop). The concept for Alien 3 is already interesting, since the prison colony have to fight off a singular Alien, but they lack any form of firearms or weapons to defend themselves.

The first AvP movie is a pretty competent film, its not outstanding but its not bad. If you can tolerate mediocre or above average films I would give it a go, though it does stretch the lore a few times (one Alien being able to kill two Predators, Young Blood but still).

The second AvP is horrible, full of cliches and horrible lore violations. The Aliens of that film turn from the cold and calculating Hunters we know into generic red shirts who run in with nary a strategy to die in the dumbest ways. The only good part in the film is the brief two minutes where you see the National Guard versus the Aliens.

Watch the first one and the second one, they were okay. I prefer the second one though. Aliens 3 is good for lore but horrible to watch. In my opinion at least.

Watch all of them.
But keep in mind that:

Alien - Is a sci-fi horror survival story.
...Not the typical atmosphere on this game, unless you play as a survivor. Or as a non-marine crew member when Sulaco get boarded and attacked by xenos. (But in both cases this game here isn't well tailored for that atmosphere in any sense.)
Oh, and that M.O.T.H.E.R AI? Is from this movie actually.

Aliens - Is a aci-fi horror action story instead.
...Very similar to this game BUT where the action element is centered on the survivor, not marines. (This game diverges A LOT of that formula - being actually a mix of vanilla SS13 residual mechanics and SEGA's Colonial Marines theme and lore.). This movie features the turrets you can see in-game. And most marine related elements.

Alien 3 - Is again a sci-fi horror survival story.
...Not that similar to this game in any sense, unless you played as a prisoner survivor in the prison map.(This map is out of the game nowadays.) But it's actually the first instance where you see W-Y PMCs and xenomorph runner caste in action.

Alien: Resurrection - is again a sci-fi horror action story.
...This movie, supposing a timeline, would be in the future (after the setting in this game). But it's from where proper "spitters" came, and it's also from where modular weapon systems were introduced in the movie franchise (attachments).
(P.S.: Not that a runner can't also spit or something... The very first guy the runner killed in alien 3 was due to an acid spit.)

Predator - A sci-fi action film
... From where came the "Dutch's dozens" reference.
Also a very good movie about the predator. (Tip? Most predator players apparently stick to to a role-play very similar to the predator in this movie...)

Predator 2 - Another similar film
...That is a good reference IF you actually is inclined to play as a predator yourself.
(Pay attention to the whole predator behavior there, and also the ending sequence, then google about the inscriptions in that gun.)

Predators - Same movie type
...For adding some knowledge about Yautja lore. (Also some ideas for tactics in the Hunter Games rounds.) This is apparently from where came part of the idea in Hunter Games, side by side with the unrelated "Hunger Games" movie.

AVP Movies (Alien Vs. Predator and Aliens Vs. Predator Requiem)
...Very good movies about the interaction between predators, aliens and humans.
Excellent if you want to indulge into more dense and immersive role-play (even as a xenomorph), and/or to apply as a predator. (In the latter case, it won't be enough - you will still need to survey a lot about the theme, but it is a good starting point...)

Alien prequels (Prometheus and Alien:covenant)
... Regarding this game, they are very far away from the theme here.
But? Watch! Why not? Those are excellent movies, with a lot specially about W-Y. (In the first one, there is a good role-play reference for an alternative truly heroic liaison if you ever play in that role here.)

I've seen aliens 1-3 (2 was by far my favorite) and prometheus (which was meh, though the theme music is really spooky), but how good is covenant and avp? I've heard avp wasnt very good, but if I like the universe enough will I still enjoy it>

Covenant Isn't released yet. By the looks of it, they're looking to rehash the story of Alien, following the events of Prometheus. I would avoid the trailer, as they're spoilerific. I personally don't have high hopes for the film.

The first AVP is an okay action film if you just disengage your brain. The plot is serviceable, and the action sequences are fine. It's an easy 6/10 film. If you like the franchise, worth your time. AVP:R is, for me personally, an abominable nonsense film with bad direction and shitty edits wrecking any potential it had. 4/10 is being generous. If you want to watch them both, there's a decent night to be had with a crate of beers and some good friends, though. There're also some reasonable drinking games that make the AVP experience less of a gradient into mediocrity, and more of an actual entertaining evening.

That's kind of a shame. I'll still watch them just because I enjoy the setting, but it's hard to live up to how absolutely brilliant in almost every respect the first 2 alien movies were.

I had seen one trailer of covenant, and just seemed like prometheus 2.0, which wasn't that stellar anyways.

How about resurrection? I've heard bad things about it and good things about it. Ok I just read the short plot summary on IMBD and that sounds stupid as fuck. I was already annoyed at what they did to ripley in 3, but... that? Really?

Resurrection is... I feel like you'd have more fun hammering nails into your eyes while riding a razorwire unicycle. My loathing for that film burns brighter than a thousand suns. Pretty sure it turned me into the cynical husk that stands before you.

It's by the same director as Le Fabuleux Destin D'Amelie Poulain, and his style while charming in that, he doesn't change it up, and as a result it is so fucking annoying in an Alien film! Where we're supposed to have sci-fi horror, we get dutch angled reaction close ups with pastel palettes and over emphasized facial features. Ripley almost makes out with a xenomorph clone of herself. A quirky band of cyberpunk rebels star as our main heroes.

From a cinematic standpoint, it's ugly and unpleasant. From a character stand point, it's nonsensical at best, and downright offensive at its worst, and the writing is a smorgasbord of equally confounding stupidities.

Watch Alien: Resurrection at your own peril. Either pack enough hard spirits to ensure you forget the experience, (or at least sweeten it with the comparatively breezy sensation of alcohol poisoning that's sure to follow), or watch the bastard on fast forward with subtitles.

It's genuinely bad. Like paradigm shiftingly bad.

Should I make a drinking game out of Resurrection?
You will never be as bad as the baldie who picked up a tactical shotgun while a hunter was pouncing on top of a CMO for 4 seconds, with his only response being to pace around before being decap'd by said hunter. You are not Brett Kimple, and you never will be. You are not the reason why I regular MP.

Drink every time you look longingly at anything that isn't Alien: Resurrection.

Though seriously, this should be a thread in Acid Goop for the whole library of Alien films.

So you recommend it then? Just kidding, just the premise sounds absolutely awful.

To be honest, anything with the name "resurrection" is bound to be a piece of shit. Reboots of classics almost always are.

I'll give one credit to Alien Resurrection.

Choosing to abandon ship the moment the Aliens escaped was the best decision to take, and is likely the best decision the General in the movie ever made in his life.

I just watched, and holy shit that movie seems TRASH. I didnt like the guy who made the video, i didn't find him funny at all, but just the shots from the movie... Holy shit, who would have ever thought those were a good idea? The guy ricocheting the bullet to kill the marine? The fucking alien-human baby? Sigourney's Weaver weird ass lesbo writing? I mean, I fucking love Weaver, but a lot of that was just... weird.

I gotta agree with what the others are saying here. Alien and Aliens are the only ones worth watching. I haven't seen all of the rest of the films, but the ones I have seen like Aliens 3 and Alien Resurrection were just awful.

Starship Troopers because that counts.

Aliens would probably be the film to watch if you want to link it to how the rounds on Cm go, and in general it's just a good film.

Starship troopers is kinda of a meme movie/satire, yet I still unironically enjoy it a lot. It's like aliens, but with a bigger focus on the marines. Lots of great scenes.

The first "Alien" is really nothing like the common AvP lore, as it was before the concept of things like Weyland Yutani (in the first film they are known only as 'The Company').
The Alien was also different in the first one, it was more of a sexual deviant that seemed to almost rape its victims, and there was no need for a Queen: the alien was able to reproduce on its own by transforming its captured hosts into eggs.
The first film is its own canon, and the only game that really follows it is Alien Isolation.

If you want to get into the atmospheres of CM and roleplay better, watch Aliens, Alien3, Predator, and then play the AvP games. Start with Aliens vs Predator 1999, then Aliens vs Predator 2 (2001), and maybe AvP Extinction if you can find it.
