Dedicated Marksman Role
Summary: I understand this has been suggested in the past, but I feel the issue is still pressing enough to warrant me suggesting my alternative.
Specialists are a role that can make or break a game for Marines, and the Specialist meta is in a place where the best weapons to take are the Smartgun and the SADAR in combination. The Grenade Launcher simply still falls behind in usefulness, the B18 armour is a joke and the Sniper, while a ok weapon, simply pales in comparison to the SADAR/Smartgun in viability.
My suggestion. Remove the M42A Scoped Rifle from the Specialist arsenal, and create a new 'Dedicated Marksman Role' for each squad, where there is one Marksman per squad.
This Marine will use a coin system similar to the Spec, and has four choices.
M42A Scoped Rifle - Marksman
Comes with the M42A Rifle, and a thermal dampening tarp.
M42A Scoped Rifle - Recon
Comes with the M42A Rifle and a SMG inside a belt holster
M4RA Battle Rifle - Marksman
Comes with the M42A Rifle, and a thermal dampening tarp.
M4RA Battle Rifle - Recon
Comes with the M42A Rifle. Maybe also comes with a ammo belt that can hold a few extra magazines.
Benefits: Snipers are very hard to justify in the current game meta, even a year ago Snipers were always outclassed by SADARs and to a extent Smartguns, this divide has only remained consistent from my and many others experiences in game.
In the are instances where I'm a Spec, I feel like I'm disadvantaging myself if I take the Sniper over a SADAR or Smartgun. While disadvantaging yourself is fine in single player games or as a Standard Marine, but in this game Specs can make or break a game for the Marines, and if you hurt yourself your hurting the entire Marine team.
This change would see the Sniper style weapons be seen more prominently in game without disadvantaging the Marine force.
If the Scoped Rifle is seen as too powerful for up to four people to have, it can be slightly tweaked to be less powerful, such as reducing its ammo per mag or making movement with the sniper much harsher.
Thanks for reading.

Re: Dedicated Marksman Role
While a okay idea, it'd take a bit of time for Mappers. I like it but just a lot of work to incorporate into the current system. Probably

Mapping would be easy, just slightly extend the main hallways to accommodate a very small room, I suggest 2x3 like the engineering rooms.

Problem with that suggestion is that it also wants to suggest more standard issue of Heavy Pulse Weapons.
I'm just going with the marksman role.

Neutral. I love the new sound and design of the Marksman, but I'm conflicted as to how the weapon will be easily distributed among the squads. Maybe hacking Cargo's weapons & gear vendor will unlock the Marksman rifle and then some?

Just make sniper more useful, aka anti-FF or night vision so you can keep hitting xenos. Then it isn't just a anti-boiler weapon, but now its a anti-everything weapon for anything that peaks its body out of weeds / injured xenos retreating from an assault.

You will never be as bad as the baldie who picked up a tactical shotgun while a hunter was pouncing on top of a CMO for 4 seconds, with his only response being to pace around before being decap'd by said hunter. You are not Brett Kimple, and you never will be. You are not the reason why I regular MP.

Re: Dedicated Marksman Role
Only reason I'm not with this is because it'll be FF galore. I'm sure specs will get an update in the near future that'll make more weapons viable. I swear Apop said he likes seeing the meta change and that there were some cool updates coming around the corner anyways so.

Just tell the RO to order nothing else but W-Y Weapon crate, then you can have a squad full of snipers. I myself will remain neutral especially because *this role* comes with powerfull sidearm, let me tell you that the mod pistol is more powerfull than the sniper itself.

Re: Dedicated Marksman Role
W-Y Crates are very unreliable and RNG dependant, a few rounds ago I got nothing but SMGs and Revolvers from them.
---------------
Alternatively the Scoped Rifle Recon variant is issued a SMG with several Armour Piercing Magazines, inside a SMG holster. Whereas the Rifle Recon variant gets no extra sidearm considering their long arm is far more versatile in close combat than the Scoped Rifle, or they get a ammo belt that can hold a few extra magazines.

Re: Dedicated Marksman Role
I dunno about this...
Can you clarify this for me? Would the dedicated roles use the marksman rifles or the M41A/M rifle?

That's why you hack the console and order black market crates instead.Steelpoint wrote:W-Y Crates are very unreliable and RNG dependant, a few rounds ago I got nothing but SMGs and Revolvers from them.

Re: Dedicated Marksman Role
The sniper rifle is a really powerful weapon when used by any competent specialist, especially so with the recent changes to it. I don't really see a reason to make it a squad position on its own though. We had some other ideas for specialist, and it's unlikely the sniper will ever be a dedicated slot. Denied.
