Decrease the amount of material it takes to print reinforced glass sheets at an Autolathe

Post by Moon Tune » 18 Apr 2017, 08:12

Summary:
As a MT I often find myself lacking in reinforced glass when I have little side projects running and have to fix the Rasputin's windows, especially if there are other MTs around that need some R-Glass too!

Benefits:
Considering that Reinforced Glass can't really be used as a viable defense against Aliens, I see little to no reason why the cost of the material shouldn't be lowered. It would benefit the engineering department with making the job more fun again in general. MTs would always have enough glass to fix up the Rasputin and even get some little projects of their own going, while not having to bother cargo with ordering more materials.

Details:
I'm not sure with what amount of materials everyone would be happy, but currently producing ten sheets of reinforced glass at an full autolathe uses up almost all of the metal and glass inside. I don't think one would have to make the glass super cheap to produce, but maybe you could half the price?

Implementation:
I'm no coder magician, but I think this would only require minor changes in the code.

This is what I mean with "little side projects":

This seems more than reasonable given r-glass' limited use in terms of balance.
I'm stressing way too hard about what to put here, so I'm just gonna leave it blank.... or....

I don't know if this is true on CM, but on /tg/station you can make single sheets of Reinforced Glass via combining a glass sheet with a metal rod.

The reason this is good is because on /tg/ you can get some broken glass, wield it to repair it back into normal glass, then you use some metal rods to turn the glass back into r-glass. Makes repairs very efficient and quick.

I would suggest this as a alternative.

You can do that too yeah, but the materials aren't enough though. If I have two broken windows, I can't recycle enough materials to repair both of them.

On /tg/ a windows always leaves enough materials to repair all the glass components, you need to bring extra metal to compensate for the metal rods being used to make r-glass.

I would need to test it out in the game to be sure, but to construct a full window you always need four R-Glass sheets. So correct me if I'm wrong but I think when you weld the glass shards of a destroyed R-Window back together you won't end up with five normal glass sheets that you then could combine with the metal rods to make a new full window.

Full window is 4 R-Glass Sheets, and most anything that breaks won't have enough materials left behind to rebuild a replica of what you lost, you should always need to replace some parts, due to it being y'know, broken.
