What if limit the server population to 180 players?
For SOME reason, we are regularly getting an average of 140 players in our server, and I fear the day the average becomes 200. I thought of ways we cut down lag, but that'd be next to impossible without buying more hardware. Lag occurs because a system is under too much stress to process information, this is what a CPU does, and this is why we never mess with task manager. But here's something to remember; always make sure you have enough RAM in your computer for large projects, delete programs that aren't used or are worthless, restart your computer regularly, and reduce the amount active programs. We CAN just start making limitations on the server population, right?
You will never be as bad as the baldie who picked up a tactical shotgun while a hunter was pouncing on top of a CMO for 4 seconds, with his only response being to pace around before being decap'd by said hunter. You are not Brett Kimple, and you never will be. You are not the reason why I regular MP.

It'll probably be the kind of thing that's looked into when it actually becomes a serious issue.

Seems very uncommon for the server to go above 180 players.

It was my understanding that general lag is less of a hardware issue and more that this atmosphere simulator that's been hacked and rehacked and cobbled together to become a space station sim turned combat free for all was never designed to have 50 players, let alone 200.

what can be done about it? not much really, apart from re-writing the whole thing from the ground up, and doing small tweaks here and there.

Re: What if limit the server population to 180 players?
Honestly, I think we can survive unlisting for a month or two.
This server works best at the 80-100 mark, any more than that and it puts too much pressure on the poor thing. Not only that, but the larger amount of marines tends to make leadership roles all the more difficult, since the larger the army, the harder it is to control everyone.
Don't get me wrong, though, having a large population helps this game a lot more than vanilla versions of the game, but when you start hitting the 130 mark, those numbers ingame tend to drop pretty quickly due to a lack of coordination.

Maybe have two servers?

Re: What if limit the server population to 180 players?
That would be too expensive to manage, let alone would require the staff being split to handle them both.mosshadow wrote:Maybe have two servers?
A part of me feels this would lead to bad things if we ever resorted to such an idea.

Re: What if limit the server population to 180 players?
The only way I could ever see two servers is if server two had a hard cap of the pop limit (20 to 30) and was designed around a utterly different game mode, likely PvE related.
Base CM works well with large populations, just too large and everything slows down.

Re: What if limit the server population to 180 players?
I don't really think there should be a player cap on it, I get that there's lag but like... It's not that bad and it only lasts so long because at that time people log off which lessens the servers workload
