Resin Symbols

Post by GoliathTheDespoiler » 28 Apr 2017, 08:21

Summary (a quick, 2-3 sentence summary):

Give hivelords the ability to build 'resin signs/symbols' to give direction to teammates.

Benefits (How this will benefit the server and game as a whole):

This will help promote stronger, maze-like defences as well as give more structure and permanence to the hive. I feel this will benefit players who are both new and old by making travelling through the hive easier. It could also be used for marking tunnels for that more organised feeling.

Details (Description of how you think this would work, the benefits, etc):
A new, exclusive option in the Secrete-Resin verb for Hivelords called 'Resin Sign' or 'Resin Symbol' which, upon placement can be given a choice of a visual sprite (premade by the lovely devs) that looks like an arrow (or something that looks similar to an alienish arrow) that can also be given a description by the hivelord by clicking on the sprite with help intent.

Upon clicking, a popup with a drop-down and text box appears. Inside the dropdown is a short list of the available directions (North, North East, East, etc.) Or smaller symbols of objects such as eggs or hosts or larvae or tunnels. A sign can have one symbol each. In the textbox the sign's examine flavor text is set.

For instance: A hivelord has placed a sign south west of a tunnel room. So in order to easily guide sisters, she spawns a sign in a high traffic cavern with a symbol of a tunnel. Upon examining the sign, sisters will find a description that can say something along the lines of "TUNNEL ROOM NORTH EAST OF SIGN". That way, newer sisters that weren't around when the Hivelord made the tunnel room can still find it without wasting time looking for it.

Implementation (Optional, if you have an idea how to implement it):

As stated before, the sign is built under the secrete-resin verb. Once built, and clicked on with help intent by the hivelord who made it, flavor text and the sign's symbol can be set through a popup.

Can marines see it?

If they can't, +1

I'd say they can see the sign. But can't read the flavor text. If there's a picture of an egg in a hive of xenos and it looked like a sign, you'd think marines could put 2 and 2 together.

Of course, if they're just invisible to marines would work too I suppose.

I'd like it to be decals that goes over the current weed and smoothly directs the flow like waves or something similar. Not a straight out arrow; It'd feel more in-tune with the organic way xenos work.
CM was obviously inspired by Starcraft: Ghost opening. At least when marines takes too long to deploy.

Whatever way this is done, this is great. Many times as a queen I was asked the same questions repeatedly. "Where's X," "why haven't you made any eggs?" These signs could really help, from denoting egg chambers to something else like a nesting ground. It can't be too simple though because marines are bound to metagame eventually. Maybe it really could be invisible to marines?

Hell yes, we need this +1

Could be fluffed as pheromones or something, marines can't smell the same thing the aliens can.
