Tips for the baldies.

Post by Dirty Old Harry » 30 Apr 2017, 11:42

So here i want to make up a sort of place to just drop tips for new Marine players and what they should try to do and try not to do.

I'll start with saying that you typically shouldn't chase after a xeno for more than ten tiles (Not taking credit for this cause plenty folks have said it before, pretty common sense too). However, some of my best moments and easiest kills have been when i've charged into the xeno line or chased after a xeno so take this tip with a pinch of salt and remember that you forfeit your right to bitch and get salty in dchat when it turns out that injured runner had a hidden friend with two huggers.

Don't knock it until you've tried it. Seriously, i'd suggest trying out everything weapon wise (Not job wise, if you're new then stick to Marine for a week or so and slowly move up to Corporal). Got shit aim? Try buckshot. Tired of trying and failing to flush xenos out from cover? M41A under GL can help you. Want to be more supportive as a Boot? Ditch the primary and run with an SMG or keep a sidearm in your bag and carry ammo for others or act as a stretcher bearer, going out to the front lines and recovering Marines that have fallen or need to be evaced. You have all the time in the world to git gud and become robust, so try out new things on your path to becoming a legend.

That one old man that USED to run around as Engineer building retarded table forts and developing relationships on a questionable level with sentry turrets. Now I run around as someone equally stupid, doing equally stupid shit as a Medic. Oh and Pookie, that's also me.

http://prntscr.com/grdigl I totally succeeded in that btw, it was a badass kick-flip.

Check your goddamn firing lines before you shoot, and don't load AP into your primary unless you're fighting crushers

Stay with your squadmates or any other marine. Some of the reason of marine casualties or captures are because of lone marines just wandering around or charging by themselves towards 'where the fighting is'.

You are human, you are not the main character, you don't have plot armor and you are certainly not going to survive.

So make sure you think of that when facing beasts the size of elephants and as deadly as a tiger.

Retreat when shit goes wrong, never rambo, stay in groups. You are the literal bottom of the food chain.

seriously, when fighting always take a look at the text tab for orders regarding retreat so you wont be left alone and wonder what happened to others.

Talk to your squad, engage in banter. Grow to give a shit about those around you, and let them give a shit about you. Don't be afraid to get invested and immersed in the arpee. All of the above helps you be more effective. Roleplaying let's you enjoy and take pleasure from the game, even when you're losing badly, and gives you truly memorable moments. It gives an extra dimension of meaning to a marine dying, or the xenos boarding. It's also probably the best way to get known in the community.

On that point, talk to people outside the game. Don't be a stranger in the discord or OOC. Actively follow up on conversations elsewhere and make friends.

As a disclaimer, I understand that not everyone enjoys arpee, and indeed gain more pleasure from the mechanical side of the game. Sadly I'm still terribad at the game, so can't really offer much in that regard.
