Aurora 4x: Commonwealth
The Commonwealth of Sol
In the decades following the turn of the 21st century, humanity found itself at a crossroads. Expand into the final frontier, and conquer the stars, or be wiped out by the cruel hand of fate. War, famine and disease all took their toll on the human home planet in the first half of the 21st century, reducing them to a mere shell of their former selves, only five hundred million strong. However, from the ashes of destruction shined a glimmer of hope. Trans-Newtonian elements, a collection of new materials with the ability to defy physics as we had previously known them, were discovered deep below the crust of the Earth. These new resources, whose properties transcend Newtonian physics, allowed humanity to further their grasp on the stars like never before, removing the troublesome effects of inertia, and allowing faster than light communication. Humanity was now able to leave behind their petty squabbles of yesteryear and expand into the great unknown.
The year is 2088, and the Commonwealth of Sol has begun their expedition to the furthest reaches of the galaxy. Having already explored and conquered their own solar system, finding it less than abundant with the resources that they required to build their stellar empire, the Commonwealth has expanded into nearby systems such as Barnard's Star and Proxima Centauri in an attempt to secure a stable future. As luck would have it, the system of Barnard's Star proved to be a boon for their efforts, containing massive amounts of Trans-Newtonian elements with relative accessibility. As efforts were made to begin to terraform the most habital of its planets, named "Novus" by the brave crew of the Ophelia, who discovered the system, trouble began to brew back in humanity's home system. Luna, a colony established quickly after the Commonwealth's journey to the stars, began to voice concerns over the newly established interstellar empire's lack of protection by a formal Navy. Things quickly turned violent, as protests became riots and riots became bombings, the brave National Guard were sent to quell the riots and bring peace back to Sol. They succeeded, however, the rioter's pleas did not go unheard.
As terraforming efforts continued on Novus, Barnard's Star, the plans for a number of combat worthy ships were drafted. First, there was the Omega class corvette, which proved to be far too weak to be any assistance to the navy of the Commonwealth. Then, the Eclipse class missile frigate was drafted, a powerful warship capable of deploying missiles in large numbers to overwhelm enemy defenses. This design made it into the development stages, until it was deemed too resource intensive, and the project was scrapped. However, from the Eclipse class's failures, the Lambda class Cruiser was born. A moderately sized warship, to be equipped with the finest laser technology the commonwealth has to offer, the Lambda class passed both theoretical planning and development with no issue. It was not ready to be produced, the first combat vessel of the Commonwealth. To be produced as a pair, the ships will be christened "Cain" and "Abel", and if all goes right, it will mark a large milestone for the newly formed empire.

((Psst, hey you. Yeah, you. I need names for ships (not classes but the actual ships) and for squadrons of fighters for the future. Planets too. Game, incase you were curious, is Aurora 4x (as it said in the title) and you can find it here http://aurora2.pentarch.org/index.php )

Hmm, well thus far for capital ships which would carry the highest ranking naval officers, I was considering the "Pax Aurora" and the "Epsilon Five", but those'll be real late game, for now I'll see what I can do for bigger ships :VKarmac wrote:You need a flagship called the Streisand.

I kinda know how to play this game, but I stopped since it's not that the game's difficult, it's just that it takes forever to do anything, even just designing the engines that ships use is a monumental task.
Its essentially a even more extreme version of Dwarf Fortress.
There are a bunch of good written and video guides on the game, one series I would suggest is Quill18's series on: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=P ... mVuvwIKH92

Re: Aurora 4x: Commonwealth
It's normally a lot easier to keep fighters named class name 1-10000 because they're loaded onto ships as ordinance, but I'll see what I can do about naming a fast attack craft (just slightly larger than that) as this.SagaSword wrote:Name one of your fighter ships the "Butt Stabber".

Re: Aurora 4x: Commonwealth
Birth of the Navy
As the production of the Lambda class cruiser came to a finish, and the first ship of it's kind, designated "Cain" was completed, a major design flaw in the ship was recognized. Beyond it's previously overlooked size, which far exceeded any realistic capabilities of shipyards at the time, the cruiser was also discovered to be incredibly lacking in maintenance supplies and engineering facilities, making it incredibly prone to breakdown without undergoing near constant maintenance by a planet bound facility. This crippling waste of funds and resources spurred debate amongst the leadership of the Commonwealth, leading to the creation of a naval doctrine which will define the inner workings of the Grand Navy of the Commonwealth.
With the naval doctrine established, the proud Grand Fleet of the Commonwealth can begin the expansion of their navy and their borders.
While this was being drafted, courageous explorers have been hard at work charting nearby star systems, and the brave colonists on the first extrasolar colony of Novus are hard at work turning the once desolate wasteland into a sprawling human colony. Within the next decade, Novus will possibly rival the Commonwealth capital with its production abilities. As the end of the 21st century grows near, humanity is ready to take on whatever the galaxy has to throw at it.

Re: Aurora 4x: Commonwealth
Think of it as Dwarf Fortress in space, but somehow more complicated looking.
Its an extreme form of a 4x game. You take your planet (usually Earth) and slowly research and build your way into a somewhat realistic space age. Literally having to design everything from the engines your ships use to the the missiles they fire. Colonization is hard as most planets are barren rocks and terraforming usually takes hundreds of in game years to even start getting somewhere, in the interim requiring you to build massive amounts of planetary infrastructure to sustain a colony.
There's also the issue of moving supplies and similar across a star system, fortunately you can just fling them around in space in giant mass drives (just don't miss, you don't want to accidently wipe out half of Earth's population because your food delivery missed the landing pad).
To justify exploring other star systems, it introduces a Trans-newtonian system where once you research into it you can create survey ships to find wormholes, these wormholes allowing you to explore the galaxy. The galaxy is somewhat made randomly on the fly, but you have a rare chance of finding other Alien races or ruins.
The game also has a 'game master' system, this is more for either lets' players who can create events or conflict to drive forward their playthrough, or for players who want to do something like spawn a hostile empire or boost their own research.

Re: Aurora 4x: Commonwealth
As steelpoint said, it's a 4x where you can essentially design every part of the game. Whereas in stellaris, for example, you get to pick whether or not you want laser, mass driver or missiles for weapons, here you have to research the technology and theories that you would use to be able to create these weapons. Then, design their focal sizes and capacitor recharge rates for lasers, what *kind* of laser even, for missiles you need to design the engines with their size, power, type in mind. Then, from that, you need to design the launcher that shoots them, and how big of missiles it can launch, the magazines that hold them, the actual missile with all of its stages and payloads etc.Feweh wrote:The hell is this game?
Beyond that, you then have to design ships and armor and shields, and then organise those ships into task groups which stack ontop of each other, which are all part of a task force which is part of a fleet. All while managing terraforming and civilian economy operations back home. It is essentially spreadsheet: the game.

Restructuring
After many decades of research and design flaws, the first space worthy military vessel to make its way into the stars has finally been designed and constructed. The first two of it's kind, named Cerberus and Defender, are now on active duty above the human capital of Earth. With this first step into a standing navy, the Commonwealth has called for a mass restructuring of both it's government, but also it's armed forces.

Noah, just going to say this, late game missiles are OP as all hell. Mid-late develop missile destroyers with CIWS with the best sensors and radar, you can essentially track any target bigger than a fighter plane from most distances, and fire a 2 shot kill nuclear missile travelling from lets say Earth to Pluto in almost no time. Shame when I got to that point myself the game lagged to a snails pace.
