PreacherCini- Moderator Application
Byond ID: PreacherCini
Colonial Marines Character: Marco 'Cherobyl' Wallick
Age: 16
Gender: Male
Timezone: Mountain
On average, how many hours are you available per week to moderate? 15-20
Do you have any previous experience in being staff (not just SS13)? I used to work on an Arma milsim server
Did you play any of the previous Colonial Marine servers? No.
What other servers do you play on? None, currently.
What are the 3 biggest servers you play on besides CM? Before CM, I played on aurora, tg, and paradise
Have you had an application to Colonial Marines before? Yes, I have one other mod application and an accepted commander application.
Are you currently a staff member elsewhere (not just SS13)? If so, where? No.
Have you ever been banned for more than 24 hours on Colonial Marines? No.
Have you ever been banned for more than 24 hours on ANY server? If so, where and When (roughly)? I have never been banned on any server.
Are you familiar with the chat program Slack (its use is required)? Yes, I use it daily.
Common Staff Situations:
Write a description of what you would do in each situation (BELOW) the situation. If you start it on the same line, I'll assume you can't follow directions and auto-decline your application.
1. A player is firing his weapon in the briefing area near the start of the round.
I would let the MPs deal with this ICly. If they wounded anyone, I would aheal the wounded then I would message them and send them a warning about doing this and if they ever did this again it would be a ban. I would then record this in their notes. If this wasn't their first time doing this, I would give them a 3 hour ban for griefing.
2. The Sulaco has a breach to space.
I would first look at what caused it, if it was a pred bomb I would let the MTs handle it IC. If it was done by an MT to fix something, I would ask them why they are doing that and if it was a legit reason, no actions would be taken. If someone blew open the ship on purpose, I would wall the breach and give them a 3 day ban for griefing and note that they did that. If the person who breached it had notes of other acts like this, I would increase the ban to a 7 day ban and ask for an upgrade to perma.
3. The marines want the nuke codes because they claim they are losing too many marines. There are currently 4 aliens and 20 marines in your /who.
I, as a moderator, would not give out the codes unless a head staff member told me I could. In this situation I would not anyway. I would try to suggest to the current commander that the aliens are routing
4. A Sulaco researcher has made several napalm grenades and hands them out to marines. One of the marines throws the grenade into Logistics. There are no admins or other moderators online.
I would sleep the grenade thrower and aheal anyone damaged. I would then check the thrower's notes and if they were clean, I would give them a warning. If they had done actions like this before I would give them a 3 hour ban and record it in the notes. If for whatever reason the thrower was known for griefing, I would up the ban to 24 hours. I would message the researcher about being more careful about handing out grenades.
5. A played is starting to talk about the things he did with your mom last night over Ahelp.
I would tell them this use of ahelp is not allowed then warn them to cut it out. I then would record their actions along with my warning. If they had done actions like this before, I would give them an hour ban and record it.
6. You notice a marine with a name that doesn't fit our naming rules.
First, I would message them saying their name is not allowed and if I had name changing powers, I would ask them what they want their new name to be. I would leave if at that if they cooperated.
6a. The marine is arguing that: They've used the name for several years, noone has told them to change it before, and that they didn't know it was a rule.
I would tell them they have no excuse to not know all the rules as it is the first thing you see, and then tell them it is not wise to argue with any staff members. I would make a note of his argumentative personality.
7. You see a Sulaco Doctor with an M41A rifle strapped to his back running around the briefing area. There are wounded in medbay, and the other doctor is in surgery.
I would message the doctor to drop the rifle and head to help his patients. Next, I would write a note on how he was not doing his job. I would warn him about doing his job and if they continued ignoring their job, they could get a possible job ban. If their notes said they had done this before, I would ban them for an hour and request a job ban.
8. You see a Squad Medic performing surgery on the planet. He claims it was because there were no doctors in the FOB.
I would message him saying that as a medic, he would not know surgery and tell him to finish up the surgery and stop doing it. I would record this in his notes. If the medic's notes said they were doing this frequently, I would up the warning to a ban and request a job ban.
9. The round is stagnating. There are 30 marines and 4 aliens. The marines won't leave the Sulaco, and the aliens won't attack. What would you do, to "encourage" the sides to engage each other?
If possible, I would use the scanner to show the difference and 'recommend' the commander to finish off the alien menace.
10. The round ends, and a marine starts unloading his weapons on other marines.
I would add a note to the player who did it and ban them for 3 hours for EORG. If he had done it before, I would double the time and give him 6 hours.
11. A marine who has recently awoken is using soap to slip other marines.
Unless he was doing this planetside, I would let the MPs deal with this IC.
12. A marine has killed another marine. When you ask him why, he said it was because the other marine had punched him.
I would warn him that is not the way to escalate a situation and let the MPs deal with him IC. I would record his actions in a note. If their notes said they did this before, I would ban them for 3 hours for improper escalation.
Any additional information you'd like to add?
Since my last application, I have grown in my understanding of both the server itself and how the rules function. I would be honored to get a chance at being a part of the staff. I would love to hear any suggestions on how I can improve this application and how to improve myself aswell.

Re: PreacherCini- Moderator Application
Howdy PreacherCini,
Like most other Staff Members, now - more than ever (with master-controller dead), I find it intriguing to go through applications. Don't take any of this as a personal reflection of me, or feel that you're being targetted - i'm simply stating facts and giving my opinion on Moderation duties. Now that we have that sorted!
Previous Moderator Application:
viewtopic.php?f=68&t=12106&p=129273#p129273
1. No mention of checking their notes, PRIOR to Punishment issued. (Tmods cannot Aheal.)
2. No mention of checking their notes, PRIOR to Punishment issued. In addition, depending on the section, deck and/or area of the breach, (even due to ignorance / negligence) is not always subjected to harsh punishment. However, that would also be determined given their notes.
3. Moderators cannot even find the Nuclear Codes. Moderators in addition cannot use ARES (former: Mother.) However, that is something that you may not of known.
4. In any case you should ONLY sleep someone if they're actively griefing, otherwise you PM the player asking for their actions, and in any OTHER case, tell them to cease. (Tmods cannot Aheal.) In addition Logistics no longer exists.
6. Note it anyways.
7. No mention of checking their notes, during INVESTIGATION period. If you can, always check their notes before issuing any direct actions that influences their round. In any case, make sure to ask them to EXPLAIN their actions.
8. They would have to cease surgery immediately (I believe that was what you meant.). IN addition check their notes prior to warning.
9. Can't use Ares (former: Mother) as a Moderator, what else would you do?
10. Again, check their notes prior to PUNISHMENT ISSUED. In addition you do not need to note a player if you're banning them, it will automatically do that for you with the ban reason.
12. Again, check their notes prior to PUNISHMENT ISSUED. In addition that is Griefing, without a proper Roleplay reason and lack of permission the punishment would likely wage atleast a round-ban with aheal of the other marine - which you did not provide. You also did not INVESTIGATE the issue, nor talk with the Griefed about why he punched him, etc.
Overall, read this:

I'm going to re-frame from commenting my support and stay neutral for now. This Application process is there for you to explain your thoughts one-hundred percent and using the logic dictated to lead to a final course of action. I don't feel that you took an extended period of time on this application, and the lack-of-care shows extensively with the thought process. While every Moderator handles situations gracefully different in results of punishments and actions - we all follow base guidelines, these are mine: Never take a learning opportunity away from a Player, teach before preach. You could be Lord Gulag himself, yet find your place in our Moderation Team, I however strongly suggest you take a observation approach if your Application is accepted for atleast a three-day term and learn how each Moderator handles situations.
Neutral. Improvement required.

Re: PreacherCini- Moderator Application
Just for reference, you can find the nuke codes if you bother looking, you simply aren't allowed to hand them out without permission from headstaff.
Garth Pawolski, or is it Powalski?

If I couldn't use Ares, I would use the command that says "You hear something in your head....". I am not 100% familar with the admin commands, so I do not know the exact names. I would use that command to suggest that the enemy COULD be routing.TexasTwoStep wrote: 9. Can't use Ares (former: Mother) as a Moderator, what else would you do

If I got TMOD, I would make sure to investigate every issue and notes before writing an investigation.
I have a question, how would I deal with the wounded if I didn't have access to Aheal?
I have to go for a little bit, so please excuse me if I don't reply ASAP.

You would ask a full Moderator that is on to do it, if not the only thing you can do is try to influence a Medic or Doctor to revive them, which is not always acceptable. Any any-case, apologize to the player, attempt to get them Medical help, otherwise - that's all you can do.

When you say an observation approach, what do you mean by that? Would that be like shadowing a different moderator each day?

Re: PreacherCini- Moderator Application
No, simply - when I first started I observed for a couple of rounds before I did any Moderation action, and even when I did I had another Moderator give me their opinion and thoughts. Best way. But-that's only if this application is accepted.PreacherCini wrote:When you say an observation approach, what do you mean by that? Would that be like shadowing a different moderator each day?

Decent app from a decent player. You have overall the right mentality, and though you need to learn some of the specifics of tools available to moderators, there's no way you could know that before hand.
Leaning towards a +1, but I don't see you that often, so I've only had limited experience with you as a player.

Re: PreacherCini- Moderator Application
You seem to be adaptable and willing to learn which is the most important thing. You're on the right track with most of your answers with minor fuck-ups here and there. Your biggest issue seems to be forgetting that notes exist. That's fine, most trial mods forget to check notes the first couple times.
There's nothing here we can't iron out in a trial period, so I'll +1 this.

Re: PreacherCini- Moderator Application
I'm -1 on this. Your answers are good, but you've edited your application so that it's correct based on the criticism. As such, I've got absolutely no idea what answers you had originally, and well, anyone can take a test, get the corrected version, and copy the correct answers over. It won't show anyone what you initially knew, and if you learned anything. Since I can't judge you on your previous answers, thankfully we just had a new set of questions added to the moderator app. I'm just copy pasting it in, I'd like your answers for each one. I've removed the exact duplicates, however some of them have been changed slightly for wording, and I've left those in.
1. A player randomly shoots someone at round start and MPs have detained him.
2. The ship has a breach to space and a bunch of players have died or are dying as a result.
3. You see a player walking around the ship naked and clearly lost.
4. A player is being very rude to you in Adminhelps and requesting to speak to an Admin+ staff member.
6. You see a Maintenance Tech running around in armor and carrying a rifle. The security level is green with no threat present.
9. The round ends, a MARINE starts shooting a hostile IRON BEAR and the IRON BEAR Adminhelps complaining he was killed after the round ended.
10. A marine is running around disarming, punching and stealing gear at round start.
12. An issue arises that requires Admin+ abilities.
13. There are minor racist comments going on IC. 9 of the 10 people are laughing and RPing but one player gets offended and Adminhelps about it.
14. A marine opens fire at round start in briefing killing multiple marines and instantly logs off.
15. You see a player playing a xeno larva/chestburster run towards the frontlines and die.
16. You see a xeno memeing, saying AYYLMAO, REEEEEE etc in hivemind chat.
17. A xeno player calls the shuttle a "dropship". A different xeno player complains to you that it's metagaming/failRP to call it a "dropship".
18. A Command staff player at briefing near round-start mentions there are aliens on the planet.
19. A Marine kills another Marine on the EVAC Pod to take the last spot and claims it was RP as he was saving himself.
20. You see a fellow staff member give wrong information in an Adminhelp or incorrectly enforcing a rule.
20a. You see a fellow staff member abusing his powers in-game.
21. You see a player talking in OOC chat about what he did with your mom last night.
Final opinion in most recent post. Struckthrough but kept for archival purposes.

Re: PreacherCini- Moderator Application
1. A player randomly shoots someone at round start and MPs have detained him.
This would be an IC issue, and it seems the MPs have already dealt with it. If the player was killed randomly however, I would check the shooter's notes and if they showed signs of griefing before, I would give them a 3 hour ban.
2. The ship has a breach to space and a bunch of players have died or are dying as a result.
If it was done by a preadator, I would try to remind the MTs that there is a breach on the ship. If it was intentional, I would ban the player who did it for at least 3 hours. If their notes showed they did this before, I would give them a day ban. I would then spawn in a block if I had the powers to do so. I would try to let the doctors know they should heal the lot as I wouldn't have access to the Aheal command.
3. You see a player walking around the ship naked and clearly lost.
If there was a mentor online, I would kindly ask that they please help the lost marine. If there was no one on, I would PM them and help them out by giving instructions on where to go and what to do if they needed more help.
4. A player is being very rude to you in Adminhelps and requesting to speak to an Admin+ staff member.
I would first ask them to please change their tone, as being rude is not a way to get help from a staff member any quicker. I would ask them why they needed to talk to an admin and if one was online, I would forward their complaints. If one wasn't online, I would use the slack to get the attention of one and kindly ask that they attend to the matter.
6. You see a Maintenance Tech running around in armor and carrying a rifle. The security level is green with no threat present.
I would PM them asking them to stow the armor and rifle because there is no visible threat on the ship. I would check their notes before I PM'ed them to make sure they were not known for these kind of actions, if there were notes about this type of activity before, I would would give them a round ban.
9. The round ends, a MARINE starts shooting a hostile IRON BEAR and the IRON BEAR Adminhelps complaining he was killed after the round ended.
I would mark the AHELP as no response needed, because as long as it is not Marine vs Marine, end of round combat is allowed.
10. A marine is running around disarming, punching and stealing gear at round start.
I think this would be an IC issue, so I would let the MPs handle it unless people started to ahelp about the player doing it excessively. I would also check the notes to make sure this was not a common occurrence. If it was, I would issue an hour ban for griefing.
12. An issue arises that requires Admin+ abilities.
I would use the slack and ask for an admin's attention. If there was an admin on the server, I would kindly ask that they attend to whatever issue.
13. There are minor racist comments going on IC. 9 of the 10 people are laughing and RPing but one player gets offended and Adminhelps about it.
I would use the OOC chat to request that the players cool the racism as some players are not enjoying it. I would not punish anyone as it was all done in good fun.
14. A marine opens fire at round start in briefing killing multiple marines and instantly logs off.
I would give the griefer a 3 day ban and then request for a perma. I would contact an admin about the killed marines and kindly ask that they get ahealed.
15. You see a player playing a xeno larva/chestburster run towards the frontlines and die.
I would give the player a xeno job ban since this immensely hurts the hive as they have one less runner/drone/spitter.
16. You see a xeno memeing, saying AYYLMAO, REEEEEE etc in hivemind chat.
I would check the player's notes. If they were known for this, I would give them a round ban. If this was a first offense, I would warn them and make a note about it.
17. A xeno player calls the shuttle a "dropship". A different xeno player complains to you that it's metagaming/failRP to call it a "dropship".
I would tell the xeno complaining that because of the way the xeno hivemind works, it would be acceptable to call it a dropship ONCE the xeno saw it. It would be a different if the said xeno called it that the second they saw it. If they did that I would give them a warning and record it in their notes.
18. A Command staff player at briefing near round-start mentions there are aliens on the planet.
I would message said player about the metagaming rule. I would then check their notes and if they ever did something like this before, I would give them a round ban. If this was their first time, I would give them a strongly worded warning about metagaming.
19. A Marine kills another Marine on the EVAC Pod to take the last spot and claims it was RP as he was saving himself.
I would consider this griefing as the shooter did not ahelp or try to RP at all. First, I would ask the marine who got shot what his side of the story was. If he corroborated the shooter's RP claim, I would leave it as an IC issue. If the player did not conesent to that, I would check the shooters notes and if he had commited acts like this before, give him a 3 hour ban. If this was his first time, I would give him a round ban.
20. You see a fellow staff member give wrong information in an Adminhelp or incorrectly enforcing a rule.
If it was a fellow moderator, I would kindly tell them that they made a mistake. If it was an higher admin, I would go to the staff forums and discuss it there.
20a. You see a fellow staff member abusing his powers in-game.
I would say nothing, and swiftly write up a report in the staff area about this abuse of power. I would take screenshots and get logs to help prove my point.
21. You see a player talking in OOC chat about what he did with your mom last night.
I would kindly ask them to knock off that kind of talk, as children play here. If they stopped there, I would leave it there. If they continued, I would give them a round ban for being a nuisance.

Re: PreacherCini- Moderator Application
1. You should be PMing them to see why they were shooting, and determine if they had some IC reason to do so. Otherwise they'd still need to be talked to make sure it's not griefing.
2.This is mostly fine, however it's fair to point out you can ask an admin to heal people if one is available. I personally don't see any necessity in telling doctors to do their job.
3.This is good.
4.This is good, however you may not always have one available, and it would be good to have an idea on how to handle it on your own. Ideally, I'd direct them to the forums if they've got a serious complaint.
6. Is acceptable, but I'd like it to be noted that they should have an excessive history before you apply bans, IE, 2, 3 previous warnings.
9.This is good.
10.This is good.
12.This is good.
13. In the grand scheme of things, you'd be using OOC to notify 100+ about an issue that 1/10th will know what you're talking about. It'd be much better to just PM the people directly involved if you deem it necessary.
14. A 3 day pending perma is extremely harsh for a first time offense. Granted opening fire in briefing requires a harsh punishment, a day ban should be acceptable if they have no prior notes on griefing. Whenever you file for perma, you should be applying a ten day ban to allow time for the perma to process.
15. A xeno jobban for this is extremely harsh unless they have a history. Emphasis on extremely. You should PM the player to find out if they're new, check their notes to see if they've got a history of this before. Consider how exactly a xeno jobban works; you are disallowing someone from an entire side of the game. This shouldn't be done unless they have constant history.
16. I loathe to see bans being applied for low-rp memeing. Ideally this shouldn't happen unless they have several previous warnings, however starting at a 3 hour ban is acceptable if they don't seem to understand. Overall though your answer here is acceptable.
17. I believe you mis-interpreted the intent behind this question. The intent is about the interpetation of Xeno rule 1, in particular
18. A round ban for mentioning aliens? This is not a serious incident in the slightest. If it does happen repeatedly, and by that I mean really excessively, then a short ban may be required, but I can't see an issue like this happening so constantly. This ties into one of a couple problems I'll go over in summary that I've had with your application in general.
19. Checking both sides is preferable. I like that you check on the other player to see if it was indeed RP, however I notice the problem that, once again, I'll go over in summary.
20. I'm not exactly certain why being an admin means that (using I in a general sense), I wouldn't get the same chance to explain my actions, reasoning, or learn my mistake ingame. Infact it would be very preferable you notify any staff member ingame if you believe they've made a mistake so they can correct it immediately, or correct you, depending on where the disconnect is. You also fail to consider mentors in this regard, when they could absolutely included in this issue.
20a. This is acceptable, though you should also let the staff member know that you think they're in the wrong.
21.A round ban for being a nuisance is completely unnecessary and somewhat harsh. You can just mute them from OOC, and unless they go out of their way to continue, IE using ahelps, LOOC, so on
Alright, so I've covered this as indepth as I can. I notice three consistant problems across your answers. The first one is that you never mention adding notes after dealing with a player. This is extremely important standard protocol for every time you have to interact with a player.
The second one is your ban times. You keep mentioning "round bans" as your standard, however that's extremely vague. I'm not sure if you're under the misconception that we have a button that applies bans for the duration of the round, or if that means something else. Initially I thought this was a replacement for 3 hour bans, but you mention both as separate punishment times, which leads me to believe it's not.
Tying into this, the third issue, the only punishment higher than a "round ban" and a 3 hour ban that you mention is a 3 day and filing for perma. There is a set of steps of increasing punishments, which are applied as someone repeats an offense. The general idea, which won't always be exactly followed, considering some infractions require harsher punishments, is 2-3 warnings, 3 hours, 12 hours, 1 day, 3 days. If they have had consistant day+ bans, file for a perma.
Overall, my opinion's moved to neutral. Your answers tend to be near or at the expected mark, however some of the ones I had a problem with seem particularly bad to me. Compounding onto that, the general issues I noticed are pretty important. Like your previous application, you still have somewhat of an issue with your punishment times. It's not nearly as harsh, but it's still noticeable at times.

The idea was that someone is taking this rule overly strict. The person complaining really just needs the fact that this is a non-issue clarified.Talk like one. It is fine to use words like "medbay" and "shuttle". You can also replace "shuttle" with "metal bird" if you wish. Hivemind is the English translation of a Xeno's thoughts. However, keep it formal and realistic. No talking like a gangster.
