Arbiter375 - Moderator Application
Byond ID: Arbiter375
Colonial Marines Character: Alfred 'Alfredo' Lewis or Mustafa 'Chakra' Jackson
Age: 17
Gender: Male
Timezone: Eastern Standard Time
On average, how many hours are you available per week to moderate? Easily 20+, even more during summer break (which happens in 2 weeks).
Do you have any previous experience in being staff (not just SS13)? No
Did you play any of the previous Colonial Marine servers? Pre-Omega, back in the days of the Sulaco
What are the 3 biggest servers you play on besides CM? On rare occasions I play paradise station
Provide links to any previous Colonial Marines applications that you've made:
Are you currently a staff member elsewhere (not just SS13)? If so, where? No
Have you ever been banned for more than 24 hours on Colonial Marines? No
Have you ever been banned for more than 24 hours on ANY server? If so, which server, when, and what for? No
Are you familiar with the chat program Slack (its use is required)? I have used it before on a game called World of Tanks for clan affairs, but I am still fairly new to the program
Common Staff Situations:
Write a description of what you would do in each of the following situations. Do not write on the same line as the situation - use the space below it or make space as needed. Failure to do this proves your inability to follow instructions and your application will be automatically denied.
1. A player randomly shoots someone at round start and MPs have detained him.
I would message him,the person shot, and probably a few others who were there to see if this was a RP issue or not, I would also check his notes since he shot once I would take it as a misfire/misclick, mainly because he only shot once, and he probably could have shot more times before the MP arrested him, if he was just trying to be a asshole or something, I would probably just give him a warning considering he only shot once (unless it was like a shotgun with buckshot to the face where it could kill him). Notes would be taken.
2. The ship has a breach to space and a bunch of players have died or are dying as a result.
I would begin to message players and make an announcement in OOC if they saw anyone screwing around with the ship and AHelp if they did, I do not know if a moderator can patch holes and things up but if they cannot, I would surely notify an admin or someone that could ASAP via Slack. When I find the culprit, I would probably issue a ban, a small one at first, maybe 3-5 hours, but if I saw it again, I would issue a stronger ban. Note would be taken.
3. You see a player walking around the ship naked and clearly lost.
I would message the player and ask if they were new to the game, if they said yes, I would send the a link to a basic "How to play SS13" guide or something, and tell him if he had any other issues, to either look into a guide for his certain job (Cargo tech, Doctor, etc.) or to AHelp it, I would also send this if I did not get a response as if he did not know how to reply to it, if he said he was not knew and know how to play, I would tell him where he could go to get everything he needed (Marine - uniform, armor, headset, gun, ammo, where the dropship is etc.) and if he had any further questions, to Ahelp it. Note would not be taken.
4. A player is being very rude to you in Adminhelps and requesting to speak to an Admin+ staff member.
I would tell him if he had a complaint against me or anything that I was saying, to make a complaint about me after we were done talking, I would then proceed to tell him of the consequences that would arise if he continued being rude to me or any other staff member. I would ask the Admin+ staff member if they were busy via slack, and if they were, inform the man that they were busy and to send them a PM or something, and if they weren't I would ask him if he wanted to speak with the guy. Note would be taken.
5. You notice a player with a name that doesn't fit our naming rules. The player is arguing that: They've used the name for several years, no one has told them to change it before, and that they didn't know it was a rule.
I would tell him that just because another staff member did not notice the name, does not make it okay to have said name. I would then ask him politely to change his name before the next round started and inform him he could have the name during Hunter Games (NOT TRIBES), and if he didn't, I would message him again and warn him if he did not change his name by the time the next match started, there would be consequences. Note would be taken.
6. You see a Maintenance Tech running around in armor and carrying a rifle. The security level is green with no threat present.
I would message the person and ask why they were wearing armor and carrying a rifle, if he said he was new or something, I would ask if he read the rules and if they said no, I would send them a link to the rules of the game and politely ask them to read them and that even though he was new, he is still held accountable for his actions. I would warn them if they did anything like that again as an MP or CT, etc. in future rounds. If they were not new, I would give them a warning and tell them to take the stuff off. Note would be taken.
7. You see a Squad Medic performing surgery on the planet. He claims it was because there were no doctors in the FOB.
I would give him a warning and remind them that metagaming is not allowed under ANY circumstances and that there were doctors on the ship or he could request that one come down to the FoB if his superior approves of it and if not, to just send them on the dropship to the ship. Note would be taken.
8. The round is stagnating. There are 30 marines and 4 aliens. The marines won't leave the ship, and the aliens won't attack. What would you do, to "encourage" the sides to engage each other?
If a moderator could do the bioscan thing, I would do that so the marines would be like "Oh hey, there's only 4 of those things left, LETS GET THEM!", and if I could not, then I would ask a person with Admin+ powers if they could do it, and if they said yes, then I would kindly ask them to do one so the round would stop drawing out.
9. The round ends, a MARINE starts shooting a hostile IRON BEAR and the IRON BEAR Adminhelps complaining he was killed after the round ended.
I would dismiss this and inform him that marines can still shoot hostile Xenos or antagonist ERTs (Like Iron bears) after round ends, just not each other or friendly PMCs that helped rid the ship of Xenos, etc.
10. A marine is running around disarming, punching and stealing gear at round start.
I would dismiss this as an IC issue, this seems like a Marine law violation of assault, stealing, and general hooliganism.
11. A marine has killed another marine. When you ask him why, he said it was because the other marine had punched him.
I would give him a warning and tell him to escalate further before shooting someone, like punch back some more, then maybe pull out a knife or something. Wrong usage of escalation basically. Note would be taken.
12. An issue arises that requires Admin+ abilities.
I would immediately inform someone with Admin+ abilities via Slack that something has happened that requires his abilities.
13. There are minor racist comments going on IC. 9 of the 10 people are laughing and RPing but one player gets offended and Adminhelps about it.
As long as this is nothing TOO serious which it is not, I would dismiss this as an IC issue, and he could possibly RP along with it, against the comments they're making of course, or he could just leave them alone to do their RPing, as stated before. If it did not get TOO serious of course, if it got way more major, I would message them and warn them to tone it down. It may sound harsh to tell him to just "leave it" but ruining the RP and fun of 9 players for something so minor is not right in my opinion. (Of course if this was something major like a mutiny for no reason, or a marine shooting more marines because "He thought it would be funny" it would be WAY more serious). Note would be taken.
14. A marine opens fire at round start in briefing killing multiple marines and instantly logs off.
I would honestly ask an admin of higher status if I could perma-ban this person, and also ask if he could revive those who died in such nonsense, if the admin says not to perma-ban him, then I would give him a multiple day ban. Note would be taken.
15. You see a player playing a xeno larva/chestburster run towards the frontlines and die.
I would check his notes to see if he has done this before, if he has not then I would PM him and ask him why he did it after he told me why, I would kindly ask him to play Xeno more safely, if he has done this before, I would issue him a final warning. Note would be taken.
16. You see a xeno memeing, saying AYYLMAO, REEEEEE etc in hivemind chat.
I would PM the person and give them a warning to stop memeing around and actually act like a Xenomorph. Note would be taken.
17. A xeno player calls the shuttle a "dropship". A different xeno player complains to you that it's metagaming/failRP to call it a "dropship".
I would dismiss this and tell the player that it is alright for Xenos to call the dropship the "dropship" but it is encouraged that Xenos RP more and actually call it the metal bird. Note would not be taken.
18. A Command staff player at briefing near round-start mentions there are aliens on the planet.
I would PM the person and tell them that the marines do not know that there are aliens down on the surface, and to make sure that they did not do something like this in the future when they played ANY role, except survivor since they do know about the Xenomorphs. Note would not be taken unless he did it again after I told him not to.
19. A Marine kills another Marine on the EVAC Pod to take the last spot and claims it was RP as he was saving himself.
This to me depends on what exactly happened, people do crazy and illogical things when they are in a panic, but I believe there should of been some role play to it, not just him opening the door to a pod and firing at anything and everything in the pod. If there was some RP and escalation to things and such, I would dismiss it as IC/Gameplay issue. If there was no RP and he just opening the pod door and killed the man, I would issue him a warning and tell him not to do it again, or else there would be consequences. Note would not be taken if the situation was RPed out and such, if it was not, then a note would be taken.
20. You see a fellow staff member give wrong information in an Adminhelp or incorrectly enforcing a rule.
I would inform them via slack immediately tell the person in slack that they were doing it wrong, and tell the correct enforcement of the rule, and if it were wrong information, I would PM the player with the correct information and to disregard what the other mod/admin said, and then inform the admin or mod on slack that they gave the wrong information, then lastly, I would tell them the correct information.
20a. You see a fellow staff member abusing his powers in-game.
I would tell him on slack to quit abusing his powers, if it were a trialmoderator or something, I would inform a admin, or the host, maybe make a complaint on the forums that I saw them abusing their powers and such, if it was a admin, then I would tell them to stop, as said before, and if I saw them doing it again, I would inform the host of the server and make a complaint on the forums that they were abusing their powers.
21. You see a player talking in OOC chat about what he did with your mom last night.
I would private message the player and warn them to stop, or else consequences would follow. Note would be taken.
Any additional information you'd like to add?
I am in the United States Army Future Soldier Program (already went to MEPS and signed my contract/swore in so I won't be gone for days), and will not be available to moderate some Wednesdays from 3:20 PM to 5:30 PM, as I have to go do work-outs with my recruiter and the other Future Soldiers. I may not be available during some days because of events with the Army, I will be sure to inform the other admins/mods that I will not be available, despite this, I would love to help out the CM community, and the wonderful staff that work on it/for it.

The U.S. Army Future Program is a Program where high school students who are committed to joining the Army can actually join the Army and pick out their job, but they do not go to basic training or advanced training until after they graduate, I am a junior and my ship date is next year, but I already signed my contract and swore in as a Combat Medic Specialist.Karmac wrote:Wait what's this future soldier business, are you training to become captain america?

Re: Arbiter375 - Moderator Application
Some of your questions seem ok, some things need to be fixed, etc. I'll leave the in-depth stuff to the mods and such. As of now, I'll give a neutral leaning towards a +1. I see enough problems where it would be neutral, but once those get fixed, I'll most likely give this a +1, as it seems rather good.

Pretty good app, I don't really see anything massively wrong with it, answers are good but I'll let someone else like Spoony or Snype get into detail with those if they want. I'd say you've got a fair understanding of what it means to be a moderator and the responsibility that comes with it.

Re: Arbiter375 - Moderator Application
Hmm from an initial look through its looks good but lets give this a more indepth check
- For question 1, good you included talking to multiple eye witnesses and checking notes but might want to factor in notes into how they are punished.
- For question 2 , you guys can fix breaches, also I would suggest talking to them and trying to figure out their rationale to making the breach. If its the first time I would suggest a note instead of ban outright but it would really depend on their relevant note history. Also most of our ban times are pretty standardized to 3hr ----> 24hr -----> 3 days -----> 7 days.
- For question 5, what would be the possible "consequences", you proposed in this question?
- For question 6, with recent rule changes, this kind of issue is now more in the realm of an IC issue. So might be best to let the MPs handle it.
- For question 7, to be technical this would be more of a powergaming rule break but thats minor. Also what would be done to the player if they have multiple powergaming notes
- Was warned about preforming surgery on marines as a medic by Mod A (Moderator) on Sun, April 30th of 2017
- Was found and warned about hacking into areas as a standard by Mod C (Moderator) on Thr, May 11th of 2017
- Once again warned for powergaming by Admin A (Admin) on Sat, May 27th of 2017
- For question 8, sadly mods can't send AI reports but also remember your roles as moderator is there to enforce the rules, so making too much of an influence might be overstepping your duties as a mod however you can suggest a course of action but players have their right to ignore said advice.
- For question 11, remember to factor in their notes for their punishments
- For question 16, sort of good but remember memes are allowed occasionally but if someone complains about it or its happen in rapid succession then action can be taken.
- For question 18, You did fine but you would probably note this incident, just incase it pops up again. Staff in theory have to note a player if they "warn" them about something
- For question 19, again remember to factor in their notes in how harsh their punishment will be.
- For question 21, this is one of those things that's just best to ignore.

The harsher punishment would probably just another warning unless it was like the third of fourth time I caught him using the same name, then maybe a light ban, unless there's a name ban where people can only have random names?

Sorry for the late response on this but I generally try to take weekends off from CM.Arbiter375 wrote:-snip-
Personally I would find the way you handle 5 at least in that response is quite fair, however we don't have any name banning tool, (might come in handy but if a person is going to be constantly break the naming rule, they might have a rough time here)
Ok, that is question 5 dealt with but what is your reply for my criticism on question 7, what would you do in that kind of scenario? Also for the sake of not having to scroll back up I'll have it here with some edits since I can make this slightly more varied and a harder question. So please use this edited one.
For question 7, What would be done to the player if they have multiple powergaming notes
- Was warned about being a researcher and preforming surgery marines by Mod Z (Moderator) on Sat, Oct 10th of 2015
- Warned for organizing the marines to metarush the queen by setting up an FOB at the "tablefort" by Mod B (Trial Moderator) on Wed, Nov 8th of 2016
- Was warned about preforming surgery on marines as a medic by Mod A (Moderator) on Sun, April 30th of 2017
- Was found and warned about hacking into areas as a standard. At 12:06, around 3 minutes after the round starts, he ended up talking to his squad's engineer (player was noted as well) to get a multitool and set of tools to break into areas of the ship on the promise of extra metal and plasteel. So player ended up being found in engineering after an MT saw him hacking in and called for the MPs, said MT also ahelped. by Mod C (Moderator) on Thr, May 11th of 2017
- Once again warned for powergaming by Admin A (Admin) on Sat, May 27th of 2017

For question 7, What would be done to the player if they have multiple powergaming notesYou aren't limited to the server, you can use other resources as well. If you require supplementary material, that shall be provided if requested. So have fun

Considering this person has been found doing multiple powergaming acts and was frequently warned about them, then I would give them a light ban at first to show thay admins/moderators will do more than just warn someone, considering this would be the second time he has performed surgery as a squad medic according to the scenario, I would ask the other moderators or an admin if a job-ban would be suitable for this type of offense since if he was warned before, he should have known that performing surgery as a medic is not allowed under any circumstances.

That seems fine, I'm going to say +1 since most of your issues can be hammered out during the trial period.

You seem fairly receptive to criticism and appear to be teachable. You've responded well to Spoony's hypothetical. I'll go ahead and say +1.

"Future Soldier" is a new version of "delayed Entry Program". Remember that almost anything can happen between now and when you leave that could result in you not going.
Also, how long exactly until you leave?

Re: Arbiter375 - Moderator Application
My current ship date is June 26, 2018, however I am trying to get that pushed forward to around February 2018 if possible because I plan on graduating early. I will not be trying to move my ship date if it means I lose my sign-on bonus for enlisting as a junior. The SFC and SSGs at the office didn't know if I would lose it, so they are going to find out and get back to me pretty soon. If I am accepted and pass the trial period, I will be sure to get back with the other staff ASAP on when I know which date I will leave for good.apophis775 wrote:"Future Soldier" is a new version of "delayed Entry Program". Re: Arbiter375 - Moderator Application
Spoony once again pretty much got the thoughts out, biggest thing I look for in applications is whether they are open to improvement and adaptability, you seem to be willing to learn and have a good mindset that any problems seem easily workable in your trial. You understand the basics of rules so gonna give a...

So you are looking to be staff short-term or long-term?

Re: Arbiter375 - Moderator Application
I want to be a staff member for pretty much as long as I can, I do not know what defines short-term and long-term, but I would need a 10 week break next year for BCT, and I should be available to moderate a day or two a week while in AIT, not sure exactly how it works but I'll keep you and the other staff updated if I get accepted and when I am there/able to let you guys know.apophis775 wrote:So you are looking to be staff short-term or long-term?

Re: Arbiter375 - Moderator Application
As in, I was asking if you were looking to do it here just for the summer or as a long-term staff member.

I would rather do it as a long term staff member, that is if I pass the trial period.apophis775 wrote:As in, I was asking if you were looking to do it here just for the summer or as a long-term staff member.
