Set Delta squad as the default preference for new players.

Post by Challenger » 04 Jun 2017, 15:02

Summary (a quick, 2-3 sentence summary):
First time logins are set to automatically prefer Delta squad for server culture reasons and so that newfriends can bond with grizzled veterans alike in an upside-down bell curve of newness to the server.

Benefits (How this will benefit the server and game as a whole):
Commanders will be able to make better tactical decisions knowing all the new people and veterans are in Delta.
As it is likely that only new people and grizzled veterans will choose to stay in Delta, you will see new players led by very experienced marines.

Details (Description of how you think this would work, the benefits, etc):
Instead of the default option for new players being no squad preference, set first time logins to prefer Delta squad

Implementation (Optional, if you have an idea how to implement it):
Code

Since apparently the title isn't obvious enough for why this is a serious and desirable change I'm gonna fix the OP.

How many forum warnings do you need before you follow the forums rules?

Also, what you're suggesting is to create a meta tactic for commanders to know that new players are in a squad, and then use metaknowledge to try and win.

It IS a serious suggestion though I clearly got it off on the wrong foot by appealing to server culture for it. In general, on its own, there isn't anything objectionable about suggesting a default squad for new people. I'm not sure if being aware of one's OOC-competency is entirely meta given that it usually translates to IC-competency as well and you ARE meant to actually know the people around you and in your squad, and I don't see what would stop a commander from having segregated his squads based on ability. Regardless, the placement of the line between metagrudging and "persistent IC knowledge", as well as whether or not it makes roleplay sense for squads to have been segregated on competency, would determine whether this suggestion is a good idea or not.

And being given information about squad competency doesn't automatically mean you'd be using it to powergame a win. I generally don't like wins, especialy planetside ones. I treat visibly new players in my squad "differently" by guiding them around their role and sticking close to them to keep them safe, similarly a Commander should be using this information to set appropriate tones between squads and be more vigilant for the new guys.
