Marine RP or combat in CM, which is more "fun" ?
Considering, the many buffs/stun meta that persists inside CM on the Xeno side. Which do you prefer, RP or combat, as a marine?
Own Thoughts:
Often, I feel when I play marine I'm hyped to get into combat. Once it has begun however, I'm sadly shaken back into reality about the unsatisfying combat. I always hope for an epic back and forth struggle between marines and Xenos, in reality it is usually a one-sided stomp. At least before certain updates, it was a slow progression of being pushed back. Sadly, the new 'extreme' emphasis on the Xeno's superiority has caused rounds to be shorter and shorter. The only chance marines ever have in victory now, is from Xeno incompetence or server population values that favour the marines. It seems that the most fun one has is from the RP and personalities of players on the marine side (usually before combat intensifies, as the rest of the round devolves into everyone shouting "Medic!" helplessly).

I'd say RPing is the funnest part of CM as long as it's not snowflakey. The core part of the server isn't meant on trying to win after all, there's a reason the odds are stacked against the Marines, you're meant to play like you're part of a story.

Both of these very tru, I tend to RP at times die for the RP. Yelling at command as SL or trying if you recall that Speed change test. You can see me shooting hastily at the xenos as they go super sayan or sonic speed at same time RPingly talking how scary as fuck events going on while they watch the horror of marines getting slaughtered. On ship, RP is a tad easier or not as worry some or bit more chill and open for. On planet RP is good but sometimes a tad risky but I say both killin and Rping is the way to go if yer up to the task.TehSpoderman wrote:i think i have the most fun doing both actually. its kinda hard to arrpee cause most likely you are in the middle of the battlefield. I like the quiet moments of sharing snacks, swapping stories, or simply standing there next to each other more than the constant combat.
Troublesome, as usual.

I like the combat more but after a while I just need to stop and relax. That usually means I got stand with the others and see what they are chatting about.

Re: Marine RP or combat in CM, which is more "fun" ?
As it turns out, me trying to rp and play at the exact same time has booted up my typing speed to 105 WPM, sooooo >.>
To answer the question, I do find RP to be the reason I keep coming back to these sorts of games, and in many situations I will set myself up in suicidal and dumb situations that would get me killed and lose me an hour of potential game time, just so I can tell amazing stories. I once managed to give a half dozen marines such an amazing battle speech that I convinced them to come with me as I charge into a xenos nest. I also spent a good five minutes away from the front line as a marine in order to convince a shell-shocked SL to keep leading on his troops. I've had memorable marines I've saved, and memorable marines that I've lost. I've played countless blackjack games in the middle of FOBs, trading banter all the way. I find SS13 to be the perfect game to create these kinds of stories that no other game can.
That being said, I NORMALLY try to avoid taking my rp so far that it would negatively impact someone elses round due to negligence. I mostly play medic. No one wants to have their defib window missed because the medic was playing blackjack at the back of the FOB. So I try to keep a balance between Gameplay and RP and switch between the two depending on what I feel like the game needs. My philosophy is that if I can keep players in the round due to good gameplay, I'll be able to RP with them more in the future cause they'll survive. That logic applies to healing people, killing and saving other marines from danger, building solid defenses, and trying to lead the marines away from certain death as a leader.
I think that maintaining that sort of balance between the two concepts is pivotal for some of the best players on the server, and while it's insanely difficult to achieve, it's still a good goal to strive for.
TL;DR: I enjoy roleplay, and having good gameplay will inevitably lead to more chances to roleplay. Try for both. Also learn to type super fast.

Carrying an MRE, flask of water, and lighter for the small chance that ill survive long enough to use them is RP enough in it's own reward.

I love roleplay, and I love shooting shit. Though when I die I can't do either so, I'm pretty sure I enjoy roleplaying more. I mean, I go and do dumb shit like run around lonely because I'm an idiot who likes death. Though I prefer a slow placed roleplay experience then a short action packed one.

I like a mixture of both, some rp and some action keep things fresh. RP helps to create a pleasing atmosphere and can generate quite interesting stories while action because that can create the high tensions needed for rp.

With how fast things go from 0 to 100 (METRIC KILOMETERS) in CM, notably how fast the xeno's can rofl stomp marines. RP'ing is hard...
To a point that it's far more enjoyable be immersed in the combat part of CM. Which undoubtedly causes a lot of salt when you fail at it. A risky roll of the dice in my opinion. However, RP serves a far more consistent way of enjoying the game with low risks and higher payout. Which, if your not in it for this alone, your gonna have a bad salty time. The thing with RP that many people misunderstood even I myself is that you don't have to actually try really really hard with it, for example talking with a German accent (only dweebs do that, kek) or going very over the top with it. Instead, be lax and casual, have a casual conversation that will ultimately lead to a more intimate bond, a bond of friendship! A bond that will fuel the fun and RP in you. Plus, everyone knows a casual conversation will only lead to a more wacky and crazier topics later on, that's how it seems to happens with my friends.
So, a recap, less over the top, more casual, more fun

Re: Marine RP or combat in CM, which is more "fun" ?
they are both closely linked. even the most casual breaktime marine rp is entwined with the combat mission, as marines are a fighting force. its unfortunate that ss13 combat is so clunky, though.

There is no real 'roleplaying' on the server, not in a literary sense. There is no archs or character progression--and how could there be?
Play for more than a week and you're basically just regurgitating the same tropes, jokes and events every round.

Well the server doesn't enforce Snowflake rp that's for sure but that's something I like because fuck snowflakes and their "unique characters".Fritigern wrote:There is no real 'roleplaying' on the server, not in a literary sense. There is no archs or character progression--and how could there be?

Telling the boys you're saving your cigar for after the operation is over, but halfway into round as the FOB comes crumbling down around you, lighting that precious premium cigar, is the best there is.
There is the small bits of RP in colonial marines that makes it worthwhile.

You can't have Colonial Marines without both Combat and RP, that's why I come here over other SS13 servers.
