Mentor Threatening Inexperienced Players

Post by IMP REBS » 11 Jun 2017, 20:51

Your Byond Key: IMP REBS

Your Character Name: Natineon 'Oreo' Mooreo

Their Byond key: Karmac

Approximate time and date of the incident (Central Us Time for best results): 6:50ish Central

Which Staff Protocols (viewtopic.php?f=57&t=5647) were broken: Not Mentoring, instead threatening.

Description of the incident: I have been playing a variety of different roles on the server, including most of the squad and medical roles. Recently I have been trying out some of the bridge roles, mostly just the battle officers but today I wanted to try being an executive officer. Several minutes after round start we realized we didn't have a commander, and that instead it would be falling onto me. I F1/Roleplay helped and said I'm new to this and may need some guidance and help and that i may be asking a lot of questions because i have never done this before, I assumed everything would be good. My briefing did not go well, i was attacked by a marine, had my megaphone taken etc so after I went up to the bridge i asked if it was as bad as i thought or what i could've done differently. Marked No Response, which is fine i was just hoping for some advice. The game is just starting out and is quickly going straight to hell, by like 12:45 both LZs are completely overrun and the planet has essentially fallen, with all four squads in ruins while their orders were only basic "Defend LZ, restore power" etc. Even if i was a god awful commander it shouldn't have happened that quickly so i suspected things were somewhat stacked against me. Now I'm asking a lot of simple command questions just because I'm new to it, like which drop ships console controls which drop ship, is the map on the forum accurate etcetera. Now a lot of these are getting responses but some aren't or even being marked No Response needed, which makes things kind of difficult when you don't know what you're doing.

By 13:00 the ship has completely fallen and the aliens have killed almost everybody (Which is i think the fastest I've ever seen) and so i asked did i really have a chance or was it mostly stacked against me from the beginning. Not angry or anything I genuinely want to know because i wanted to know where I could improve upon for future reference. It was marked a No Response and then I received the following message from Karmac: "Keep sending ahelps that don't require moderator assistance and I'll have to note your account for it, I can only ignore your silly questions for so long". Now I'm asking questions because I want to be a better commander. Yes I am sure some of them are silly but I wasn't necessarily expecting to be put in this situation when i put the XO as one of my job preferences. I am genuinely trying to learn how to do things and it felt like the round moved so quickly and I received reports that the marines were attacked almost immediately upon landing so I wanted to know if there was something i did on my end or if it was just bad luck or whatever. What I don't want is a threat when I'm trying to ask for Mentor help and to improve.

Evidence (screenshots, logs, etc):
Didn't think to screenshot but that is an exact copy/past quote
How you would punish the accused: Make a note on his account because I'm petty

You literally ahelped "was it all setup from the beginning" or something, we're really not supposed to allow that kind of silly business in our ahelp system. At least, to me, what you ahelped sounded like some kind of joke or a complaint about the fact we got wiped really quickly by the xeno team, I apologise if that's not what you meant.
Garth Pawolski, or is it Powalski?

After looking into this, you ahelped multiple times through the round, but twice towards the end were ahelps that you really shouldn't have messaged staff about. They are the following, including Karmac's response.

[19:02:28]ADMIN: HELP: IMP REBS/(Natineon 'Oreo' Mooreo): Do we have any MPs?
[19:02:34]ADMIN: PM: Karmac/(Garth Pawolski)->IMP REBS/(Natineon 'Oreo' Mooreo): IC info

[19:08:55]ADMIN: HELP: IMP REBS/(Natineon 'Oreo' Mooreo): Did i even really have a fair chance or was it stacked against me from the begining?
[19:09:56]ADMIN: PM: Karmac/(Garth Pawolski)->IMP REBS/(Natineon 'Oreo' Mooreo): Keep sending ahelps that don't require moderator asssistance and I'll have to note your account for it, I can only ignore your sillly questions for so long.

Now, while Karmac's response didn't require the word "silly", your questions at the end don't require moderator assistance. We have a policy on CM of punishing people for sending useless ahelps. In no way was he "threatening" you, he was informing you about what would happen if you continued to send ahelps that didn't require mentor or moderator help.

Your ahelps were silly. We are not going to give you IC information in ahelps, and I'm not even sure what you meant by asking if everything was stacked against you in the beginning.

This is a pointless staff complaint as Karmac was not unprofessional or needlessly aggressive, and he was simply doing his job of informing you of the rules.

What i meant with the MP question was how could i check. I know there's a computer but i wasn't sure if you could filter it. Time was short so it was poorly worded. The stacked against question was due to me having played a lot of rounds, and while sometimes defenses are pressured quickly I have never seen two squads get wiped out while defending LZs that quickly. Sometimes there are special events or things that happen. For example two days ago there was a game where a predator exploded and killed an entire squad. So the question was mostly asking was it a normal game mode or were there external factors that caused it to fall apart that quickly.

As a SO, you have access to the MP channel via speaking through : p (won't let me put the two together because its considered a emoticon).

You can ask through there if any MP's are alive.

Alternatively, use the Crew monitor console at the middle bottom right of CIC. Then, ctrl + f and type in Military, or do Police. You should automatically jump to any Military Police that have their suit sensors on, and suit sensors are fully on by default on CM.

Seeing as I answered your question, the rest of this complaint really doesn't have much merit. Its understandable that you feel upset due to a lack of response by Moderators, but the reason is because Karmac was the only Moderator on at the time for a 100 + server. Its not exactly an excuse, but thats just how it is; when you moderate alone on a huge server, you tend to give out verdicts as quickly as possible so your not swarmed by ahelps, and your a unfortunate side effect to that.

Here's the real facts of the matter. Both of your questions were related to in game information that we're not going to give. We get an absolutely obnoxious amount of ahelps that have ranged from, "...", To "fuck you, admins", to an imgur link of Ian with no context that I am still frankly curious about. We're cutting down on these ahelps that do not require staff assistance, and your ahelps were exactly that.

You weren't threatened, you were warned. There's a big diffrrence

Thank you Swagile that was exactly what I needed. The MPs stopped responding to radio messages like 40 minutes in so I needed a fast way to search if there were any left, its just under pressure that was the fastest thing i could type
