The War for Nonpo-- Hawaru Island
The airbase was in absolute pandemonium. Everywhere there were foot soldiers and hangar crew trying to put out fires, carrying extinguishers and pressure hoses all around the air-field. Water sprayed from hoses dispersed into mist spreading through-out the air and onto the soldiers' uniforms, the water feeling quite refreshing against the extreme humidity naturally emanating from the planet.
The dropship was on a landing pad just along the right of the air-strip. West of it was the Air Control Tower, a very tiny one to prevent it from sticking out like a slab on the horizon which could make it an easy target. Bravo Squad was on the side of the drop-ship opposite to the ATC while Alpha Squad was on the near side.
"Reno? Reno Story, can you hear me?" Reno's earpiece went off. He could barely hear the voice through the deafening roars of engines and fire burning and pressure hoses spraying.
"Yes? Who is this?"
"This is your SO, August Walker. I'm here to relay orders to you."
"Well, could I get some now? Seems like the whole airbase is on fire!" Story exclaimed into his head-set still carrying the polite tone he always spoke with.
"The Airbase was being shelled by the Communists as you were landing... they stopped just before you touched ground."A distant BOOM went off followed by a group of men screaming. "Look for a command tent surrounded by sandbags, it should be next to the control tower."
Reno looked through the cockpit windows seeing the miniature ATC just ahead of himself. It was barely 2 stories high with some antennas sticking out the top. A rain of metal pieces started landing on the squad, dinking off their helmets.
Next to it was a wall of sandbags with a cam net hanging over it. "Found it," Story announced. "Headed there now."
Meanwhile Alpha squad had already been given orders to head to this field tent and were walking there now. They were all silent in the middle of the chaos which filled them with a breath-sucking anxiety, not thinking to say anything to each-other; In the silence one un-bothered by the surreal scene spoke up, "This sure is an entrance isn't it?"
The others were silent under the ambient yelling. Dan shrugged. "Hey, landing was better than nothin'."
"Anybody got a smoke?" spoke up a gruff jaded voice from the column. The background commotion was starting to die down, it seemed as if things were getting under control.
Another grunt, a woman tapped the man's shoulder handing him a cigarette and a zippo lighter. "There ya go Garth," she spoke.
"You ever smoke any of those cigs yourself Vanechka?" Dan said looking at the strap which held her box of cigs. Garth lit up his cigarette and put his hand behind his back not caring to look behind himself handing her the lighter.
"Sometimes," Vanechka grabbed the zippo lighter and held it in her palm. "Why, you need a smoke too?"
"I'm fine, I've just never seen you use your own smokes before."
"Hey, I can have you carry em, Rotten."
Dan grinned. "It'd be an honor Sleepy, but nah, I'm good."
"Ay, too bad." She stuffed the lighter back under the strap. "My last lighter got shot apart, the thing cost me 20 bucks."
"On your helmet? Musta saved your life." Dan stepped on a piece of shrapnel, crushing it to pieces.
"It did, infact." Two men with a water hose started running into the column. "Out the way people, move move!" They barged through Dan and Panechka dragging a twenty-foot long hose on the ground connected to a fire hydrant some way's away. The rest of the column stepped over it.
"Heh, maybe I should carry that lighter then..." Dan muttered under his breath.
The column finally made it's way to the field tent, right outside it's perimeter where an Officer, a Major was studying a map of the landing area. The SL went up to him telling him something unintelligible under all the wild commotion.
The Officer turned around, studying the squads. Bravo was just behind Alpha, then Delta, then Charlie. They all spread out shoulder-to-shoulder shaped as a half circle around the Major.
"Good morning marines," the Major said adjusting his officer's cap. "I understand this platoon had a quick briefing than most ship-side, so I'm here to give you some insight."
"The landing starts tomorrow at 0600 sharp. You'll wake up at 0400, get your chow and take care of whatever you need for the rest of the hour. Now listen here grunts," his voice audibly changed to a more stern, hardened tone. "We're landing behind enemy lines here. Our boys down south, the Poyong Loyalists, we won't be seeing any of them for a while. They're advancing north while we advance south and eastward and hopefully we'll make contact with them by the time we've reached our ultimate objective... Togohashi River. Any questions?"
One of the medics of the squad, Alyssa Cowper raised her hand. "What's Togohashi River?"
"Well, it's the river the Communist Regime's capitol city is built on, if we can take control of it we might be able to siege the city and take it over from there, de-stabilize and take out the insurrection once and for all."
"Good ol' capitol invasion," Garth spoke under his breath.
"Hopefully by then those ARPL guys would've met up with us, we don't want to take the capitol on alone. It'd take a heavy toll for just one military..." the Major's eyes began staring blankly.
"Anything else?" The Officer suddenly stated, focusing back on the troops seeing one Delta raise his hand.
"Are we getting reinforcements?" asked the Delta soldier with his squeaky, high-pitched voice. He looked no older than 20 and probably wasn't, a boot fresh out of High School.
"Weyland Yutani is considering deploying back-up troops if things get hairy for us. That's all I know."
"Now is that it, marines?" The platoon altogether was silent as they stood at attention. The Officer took a peak through a hole in the cam net; during their field briefing much of the collateral damage had been put under control, the Seabees were already hard at work filling craters and repairing damages. Things were much more calmer and quieter than they had been.
Facing the platoon the Major saluted, with the troops reverberating this action. "Get yourself some chow and rest Marines, tomorrow will be a long day... Dismissed," the Major ended his statement with a solemn intonation to make himself sound dignified.
The platoon spread out, and with most of the noise produced by the chaos now gone began to ease up and relax.
Dan noticed that many of the marines were breaking off and migrating across the air-strip. Completely unaware of where everyone was headed to, he turned to see Garth still smoking his cigarette up to the butt. "You know where everyone's going, Powalski?"
When Powalski noticed Dan's face he simply shrugged and went back to smoking. Dan turned around and saw an acquaintance of his, another Alpha squaddie he slightly knew. "Hey, Trev," he followed him as he walked. "Where's everyone going?"
Ed Trevor turned his head to the side, still walking. "We're heading to the chow hall Rotten."
"Oh yeah, I was thinking of heading there just now. Guess everyone had the same idea."
"Yep," Trevor spoke earnestly.
"C'mon Trev," Dan said. "Let's go fill ourselves up."

Is it bad that I was expecting Major Bill Carson?
Just like the marines could never escape him.
In a firefight Bill Carson comes along and he's like "Remember to square your shoulders marines" then throws a grenade and takes out 3 of Reno squad.

Really good story man, it makes you feel like the characters are not some dumb horror movie cliche'd protaganists but moreso real people.

Well he is *just* a platoon leader, so he can go planet-side. Having him stalk the marines popping up every now and then from nowhere seems almost fitting for his kind of character.Renomaki wrote:But Carson is already the CO of the platoon..
