Lin Chang (Roland410) Whitelist Application
Byond ID: Roland410
Player name you use the most: Lin Chang
Make a list of links to all of your applications and (job)ban appeals, including whitelist and staff apps, within the last year. Also, provide "Ban reason; Verdict" beside each (job)ban link: None.
Do you understand that any player - even donors or staff members - can have their whitelist status revoked should they break our Server Rules or Roleplay Guidelines? I do.
Why should you be whitelisted?
Leaving generic bullshit excuses behind me, I'll get straight to the point. I'd like to try myself at being a CO.
I've been playing command and occasionally shipside roles recently a LOT compared to ground roles (although I do that too) quite a few times as XO too until I got bored of being a replacement CO (since mostly we had SOs to OW), and I think it's time for me to step up and handle a bit bigger responsibilities.
My RP skills may not be as great as most commanders, neither are my tactics, and even though it's supposedly a high RP role (which sometimes it is), I think I'd be a good commander.
Feel free to ask me anything, because I feel like trying to force something more to write here would be just bullshit.

Re: Lin Chang (Roland410) Whitelist Application
Well, since you didn't tell anything specific to go on, here it goes.
"Good morning ladies and gentlemen, hope you had a pleasant sleep.
We woke because there has been a distress call from LV-624, namely Lazarus Landing. The colony went fully dark, no comms or anything.
We suspect CLF or UPP forces down there, but since it was only a generic distress beacon, we have to prepare for the worst.
I want Alpha to set up an FoB at Nexus and hold it until further orders. Triage should be in the eastern wing, close to the LZ.
Bravo will be fixing the power and communications and make sure it will be up and running.
Charlie, Delta, scout duty, I want to find all colonists and learn what the hell happened down there.
Charlie, you scout the northern parts, Delta you go for the west and south.
If it wasn't obvious, Alpha, Bravo, take the Alamo, Charlie, Delta, take the Normandy.
This is a night operation, which should not be anything new to you. Prepare accordingly.
Any questions? None? Dismissed."

Re: Lin Chang (Roland410) Whitelist Application
The briefing was a bit generic buuut get the job done.
I will throw up a case here:
You are the CO that woke up late. When you get to the bridge, you see a sweeting XO and SO's.
Alpha got mostly wiped out, Delta is stranded in the underground with no way back, only having a Spec, a medic and 3 standards with one mildly injuried.
Charlie and Bravo are holding down LZ-1 but they will fall without supplies.
What do you do?
Edit: Forgot to Add that Req only have one guy working and he's new.
Also, is on Ice-colony.

Yo, I like how honest you are.
How will you communicate and enforce/make sure your orders are followed?
Any specific rules to RO? (Such as handing a bag full of AP to get attachments? *Wink wink*)
Any chemicals you'd prevent from being handled or that you would legalize?

There are a lot of missing details there, so I'll work with what you have, but don't expect TOO much.BladeBr wrote:The briefing was a bit generic buuut get the job done.

First of all, I'd talk with the XO and SO's, get more details about the operation, and the squads, specifically how many marines, where they are and what role do they have. Then with the staff, I'd try to come up with a plan that works well for everyone, and after that I'd try to raise the morale by giving a speech via announcement to marines. If I was able to come up with a plan by now (for this situation I'd probably get Delta to regroup with Alpha somehow although I'm not sure what you meant by "no way back" since they can use the ladders), I'd get the XO to enact it, and head down to RO, until someone else can help out the RO/CT working there.
Since there are two of us, we could probably manage to get the supplies to LZ1 either via dropship or supply beacons, and unless further help is needed, I'd return to CIC.
I think I covered all of your points, if I have left anything out, please tell me.
To the first question, I'd relay my orders through the XO/SO's to each squad, if needed announce it, but to be perfectly honest, we all know marines will almost always disregard orders they do not like, even if that is logical (for example retreating when most of the marines are KIA and the aliens are swarming the LZ).Dolth wrote:Yo, I like how honest you are.

Nothing specific, other than BCs are only for smartgunners and SLs, and the attachment vendor must always be stacked. The AP rule some COs/XOs make is literally retarded, at least in my opinion and it only hinders the marines when they need to use it.
As XO/CMO I always authorize non-narcotic drugs. The one drug I'm always conflicted on is hyperizine, because we all know that marines WILL abuse it, but if they were not to, it could be authorized as a stimulant used for emergency escape situations, but some people might say that'd be meta.

Re: Lin Chang (Roland410) Whitelist Application
Kinda pleased with what I read, finally.
Last questions questions before my vote;
Will you monitor yourself squads and attempt leading them somewhere or will you completely use the chain of command (XO/SO) to lead through delegation? If not, how will you proceed to realize 'tactics'?
If your officers/yourself keep spotting SL & marines aside of your given objectives (most of the time, they just don't see objective), what will you do?
And finally, that's not much of a question but, will you keep an eye overviewing RO, at least just a bit, to have a constant amount of supply drops (that includes kicking officers ass for NOT pressing the damn button once the RO is done).
Voilà.

I might monitor the squads myself, yes, but otherwise if the SO's are doing their job, I trust them to do it and I do not wish to micromanage them.Dolth wrote:Kinda pleased with what I read, finally.

First of all I'd give a "kind" warning about sticking to the objective, and recite it, since newer players may not be aware where they are displayed. After the first warning, there'd be a second "stern" warning about it, if they do not follow after that, all members of the squad would be set to arrest that did not follow objectives (this'd be the harder part, but doable).
Even though it's "not much of a question", yes, I would, should any problems arise with supplies not going as intended, I'd get on RO's ass hard, unless they have a valid argument as for why it was so.

Re: Lin Chang (Roland410) Whitelist Application
So far so good, what's funny is I see much more potential into you than recent commander applications.
Solid +1, I'd rather have an honest commander that gets shit done with medium RP than a RPish commander sitting and doing nothing useful beside the recent shit we had.
Now as an advice, micro managing is kind of your job, like, drawing up a list of what's vital for the functionning of the ops, delegating, then checking if people are doing their shit well IS your job. Once you do that and make sure orders are spammed through different channels, pretty sure nothing will get wrong (unless you send bravo to scout and delta to FOB, instamutiny).
Yup, +1 and pretty eager to have you as a commander, hopefully people won't down-vote you cause I up-voted you :P.

Thank you! I mean micromanaging as in I don't order doctors or CTs if there is a CMO or RO present, since that'd just make their role pretty much nonexistant.Dolth wrote:So far so good, what's funny is I see much more potential into you than recent commander applications.

Re: Lin Chang (Roland410) Whitelist Application
Why the hell do we ask people to give a mock briefing? Its a waste of time in all respects. There is no 'correct way' to play as a CO so demanding Lin micromanages the ship like he is a C&C commander is a poor suggestion to demand.
On topic, I saw Lin Chang as a XO and he did well enough for the circumstances, he did delay the briefing to 12:25 and he was a bit slow to talk but I think I can chalk the briefing delay to other issues and Marines were shitposting in his speech. His orders were also a bit weird and not the best but we don't deny whitelisting for giving less than stellar orders and we still won the round, he was also personable to the marines once the operation went on.
Lin would be fine as a CO.

Re: Lin Chang (Roland410) Whitelist Application
To be fair the Marines were taking the piss out of you for the duel fact that you delayed the briefing to 12:25 which eventually turned into a 12:30 briefing, and we did not leave until 12:45.
Secondly you were talking very, very, slowly. There was oft a twenty or so second pause between parts of your speech.
So for the future, talk faster (even if you have to pre-type your speech on a piece of paper and copy+paste parts of it) and start the briefing around 12:15 to 12:18 at the latest.

Well, that round WAS awful for me, yes. I usually stop typing to let the marines calm down a bit so I can actually continue the briefing, I'm not exactly a slow typer, but will talk faster if I am allowed.

Re: Lin Chang (Roland410) Whitelist Application
I'm going to +1 this. I see you in a lot of SO/XO roles. You don't strike me as someone who will abuse the position, and I love seeing new faces and approaches to Command.
A tip I'll offer; keep a word document open and saved for briefings. Pick and choose from CO's you've liked and remember!... You're there to bring forth RP for the round. Be that asking the CMO to provide OD limits for Medicine, doing random inspections of departments to ensure Marines are doing what they SHOULD be doing, or providing rousing speeches and the like.
Good luck!

Random inspections sound like they could bring a lot of RP situations out of people and I haven't really been doing that, so I'll try when I can. Thank you!

Everyone has different expectations of COs but for me having enough experience as a good XO should be enough to get you whitelisted.
