Unmovable - Coder Application
Byond ID: Unmovable
Age: 23
Gender: Male
How would you define yourself? (Coder, Mapper, Spriter): Coder, occasional mapper
If Coder, what languages?
- A bunch on personal time, including some DM. Java at work
Any previous experience developing with SS13?
- A little bit, mostly merging upstream code from TG and bug fixes
Proof of any previous or current work:
- I can go find some of the commits if you want, but it was really pretty minor stuff
How well do you know Git?
- Pretty well, use it in my day job and personal work
Your primary job is server development, not policing the server. You may be given Moderator-level of access but you should *not* be invoking any administrative actions unless there are no moderators or Admins online. Do you understand? (Yes/No)
- Yes
Anything else you'd like to add?
- I know there's not much to go on here for you guys, but I was hoping that it might be possible for me to do some kind of task to demonstrate my proficiency. I have not worked extensively with DM but I've worked with it enough to grasp the fundamentals of the language and I would love to be able to continue learning while contributing to an awesome server. If you have nothing particular in mind for this, I will try to find an opportunity elsewhere to show that I'm capable of contributing effectively to the dev team.

We'll see about putting together a test for you. In the meantime, what is something you'd like to add to the game or what/how would you improve something that currently exists?

Re: Unmovable - Coder Application
Something I think would be appreciated by SLs is a better way to view your squad status and assign fireteams. It seems a little odd that an SL has to call up to the SO to get a headcount. I think it makes sense that only the CIC's more powerful computers can track vital signs and location, but I'd like to provide SLs with a basic view of that information. I was thinking that the squad tracking beacon could be expanded into a ruggedized tablet/PDA that permits the SL to see the list of people currently in their squad (minus vitals and location) as well as assign fireteams to individual members.
I'd also likely take a stab at a bunch of bug reports (if there's a backlog sitting around somewhere) because I've found that's the best way to learn a codebase.

What languages do you like besides Java? Which is your favorite?
What sort of things have you done in DM?

Re: Unmovable - Coder Application
I've spent a lot of time with PHP, HTML/JS, MySQL, C, Rust and C# through work/education/personal projects. My favorites would probably be Rust and C#.
As I mentioned, haven't really done a ton in DM. I mostly did minor bug fixes and resolved merge issues. I created a "zombie implant" on Yogstation, that essentially just allowed the user to inject some zombie powder and antitox stealthily.

Desmond Stride, I've played intermittently over the past couple of years and only really started playing a bunch in the past few weeks. I've always enjoyed myself, and I enjoy development quite a bit as well so I'd love to be able to contribute as dev. I see myself sticking around for quite a while, and I'd like to help out with the community I'm joining.

Can you provide some commits you worked on?

Re: Unmovable - Coder Application
Really just the one, here. The zombie implant piece was mine, not the mindslave. You can also see a changelog diff here that lists some of the fixes I made. I didn't do much else other than merging and bugfixes, and Yog has since rebased and moved from closed to open-source (and between repo hosts). Commits appear to have been lumped in under a generic user during this. I was mainly an administrator at Yogstation though, so I didn't spend a ton of time developing.

What is your style of teamwork? Do you prefer to be given a task, finish it on your own, then receive feedback from others once it's complete? Or do you like to bounce ideas off of others and look for feedback as you work on the task? No wrong answers.

I tend to do a bit of both, I'll bounce ideas off of others as I figure out exactly how the implementation is going to work and then check in again at a major milestone or completion to make sure that everyone is good with how things are working.

While I can't vouch for you as a coder because I am just a mapper myself, I do like your style of teamwork. I do the same thing in regards to mapping so, +1.unmovable wrote:I tend to do a bit of both, I'll bounce ideas off of others as I figure out exactly how the implementation is going to work and then check in again at a major milestone or completion to make sure that everyone is good with how things are working.

Re: Unmovable - Coder Application
Thanks for the support! If it would help, I could PM one of you guys my Github. I don't have any DM on there, but there's some other stuff there you guys could look at.

You can send it to me if you want and I'll take a look at it, then forward it on.

BMC will be back in two days. I hope you don't mind waiting for him to return! He handles our coder tests.unmovable wrote:Thanks for the support! If it would help, I could PM one of you guys my Github. I don't have any DM on there, but there's some other stuff there you guys could look at.

Re: Unmovable - Coder Application
Sorry this is taking awhile. Couple of vacations among head staff just ending. Since we are closed source, we don't have the benefits some servers have of hundreds of content contributors. This means that members of our small dev team must be fairly active. Do you expect to be capable of putting a good amount of time into dev work without long periods of inactivity?

Re: Unmovable - Coder Application
No worries! I'd be comfortable committing to probably ~24 hours a week on average, and sometimes will be able to put in more depending on demands from work. Of course there may be some periods of inactivity, but they would not be a regular occurrence and would likely coincide with expected inactivity (ex. few days/a week off for vacation during the summer, Christmas break, Thanksgiving weekend, etc.)
