Here are the main reasons to wear these supposedly un-protective articles of clothing:

1. The very nature of these coveted headgear make xenos rush towards you like bears to honey. Why do you think those who wear no helmets carry buckshot shotguns? Exactly.

2. You tend to realize your mortality while wearing no protection on your head, and in doing so, realize how very little a helmet actually protects you in the long run. Hence you slowly grow to be more cautious as a marine and manuever yourself in a manner to not get hit, or only get hit when you know getting hit also means killing a xenomorph.

3. Getting decapped at the end of the day doesn't matter, because 9 times out of 10, no one is going to take the time and effort to defib and heal a lowly private when a SL, Spec, Engineer, or even Medic is dead or dying nearby. Not to mention the endless list of alive people who are barely holding on and need immediate medical attention. Hence your helmet really didn't achieve the effect of keeping you alive; see point 2. to realize why this is important now.

It doesnt really matter what do you have on your head while you are getting beheaded (except it is helmet, duh). So no style points when you have no pumpkin to wear your beret on.

Also, cardborg hat gives you even moar style points of greytide.

I'm not going to wear a cap like some kind of nerd, I'm going to wear my U.S.C.M-issued helmet. It saves you from a lot, I don't need to look bald like all of you lot with the ol' fabric headgear to attract aliens, they see me and my competence radiates an aura luring hunters and runners alike to test their mettle against my rifle and shotgun loadout. Now, berets are of course the fashion choice for the average joe marine on the ship, but if you bring it planetside I have to spend more of my time saving your dying corpse from the xeno hordes instead of using my manly shotgun skills to slaughter aliens.

Wear helmets, my friends, stay unbald. And remember, rescuing dying marines is half the battle.

On a slightly more serious note, helmets can take the edge off of damage. You never know just how much a helmet can save your ass until you get hit in the head by a ravager and RNG decides to have mercy upon you. Also, if you don't wear a helmet, choose the beret. Caps are inferior, flipped caps are horrifying, headbands ain't too bad.

People keep saying about how headbands teach you to avoid huggers and dodge aliens and such, yet most of the times I see headband marines in game they lie on the ground with 1-3 bullet holes in the back of their head. Ironic.

I'll never forget the round our b18 spec refused to wear both his b18 armour (claimed it made him too slow,) and b18 helmet (becuase he wanted to wear a headband to look 'cool') Despite us and the sl telling him how bad an idea this was, he was insistent. He died 10 mins in when an elite hunter pounced over a barricade and decapped him in 3 hits.
