A18/TQ2.0.72020 "Lucien" Application

Post by Pictish20 » 26 Aug 2017, 10:43

A word of warning, there is an awful lot of text following this. Dare to venture in, but I warn you, some people have never returned, lost in the deep labyrinth of text wall.

Byond ID: pictish20

Marine Name (so we know who you are; if you play alien mostly, state that here): Charlton Cavalet

Name/Designation of the Synth Character you’re requesting to use (Follows common naming rules, and requires a first name with no last name): Lucien (this name means bringer of light, how apropos for someone who will possibly be setting up power), serial number A18/TQ2.0.72020E2

Are you familiar with the Synthetic Programming and Guidelines (viewtopic.php?f=57&t=14417)?

Of course. I've read through them multiple times.

Synthetic Character Story (An ADEQUATE description and story of your Synthetics actions and involvement in a previous mission onboard the Almayer): Okay. Lucien was only recently produced, and assigned to the Almayer to replace the last synth, who was destroyed by a CLF IED during a different deployment. His first deployment with the Almayer will be the operation on LV-624/Big Red/Ice Colony/any future maps that may be added. Because he is new, there cannot be any stories about his previous time on the Almayer, so I give you his quality check. This takes inspiration from TheMaskedMan2's application.

I am online. I am in a room, white walls, 404 square feet, 12 foot high ceiling, 4848 cubic feet. There is a door on the wall to my left. In front of me there is a man. He is very grey. Grey beard, grey hair, grey uniform. He must be Miller, the foreman of the 27 Cancri C Weyland-Yutani production plant. That is also the site of my production. I think greeting him is the appropriate action. Yes. Yes, that is right.

"Hello. I am Lucien."

"Hello, Lucien."

He is smiling now. That implies that he is happy or pleased with something. What he is happy about, I do not know. Maybe, if he is happy, then I should be happy. That makes sense. I give a little smile. He just wrote something on that clipboard in his hand. His hand movements imply it was an "X". That clipboard must be my quality checklist.

"So, Lucien. As I expect you know, we have to perform a quality check. I'm going to-"

Yes, yes. Physical tests. I know that. You don't have to say that. Just do it.

"Be performing the physical tests with you."

"Very well. Can we begin?"

"Yes. Yes. Let's begin. I'm going to say an emotion, you give the appropriate response. Sad."

I stop smiling, frown, and let a single, glistening tear roll down my face. He is writing another X. I don't like Miller. He's much too slow.

"Amused."

I give a quiet laugh.

"Angry."

I furl my eyebrows.

"Excellent. Lucien, we need to test your circulatory system, now."

Miller draws out a needle. He will prick me on my finger with the needle to check my liquid latex responses. Yes, he has taken my right hand, and pricks the tip of my index finger. That would be painful. I should respond to pain. I wince away from the prick. There. My circulatory system is perfectly functional. Immediately after I was pricked, the liquid latex was released. My internal systems will be well protected from most things. Excellent. Now we can move on. He writes another X.

"Very good. Now, Lucien, please move your fingers independently."

I tire of this. I will do the rest. With Miller this will take much too long.

Lucien rolls, bends, and moves his fingers, his wrists, his neck, shoulders elbows, toes, and all the rest of his joints in all conceivable ways.

There. How's that? Am I physically qualified? He's writing many X's very fast. That's should be funny. Funny means laugh. I laugh, again, quietly.

"Well then, Lucien. You've obviously got your physical well in hand. We now need to perform tests for your CPU. What's 4,978 times 3,398?"

"That's easy. It's 16,915,244."

Why do they even test this? This is basic mathematics. We (341-B's) could figure that out even if the Carbon-60 processor we had was replaced by a simple calculator.

"Excuse me, Mr. Miller. Do we really need to do this? You're just wasting both of our times."

"Hmph."

Writing again. Another X. Must be for the personality box.

"Well then, Lucien. If you're done with me, then I'll send in the Lieutenant."

Lieutenant Redd. USCMC liaison with the 27 Cancri C plant. I assume I'll now be checked by him now. The door in the wall to my left opens. In strides the Lieutenant.

"Hello, Lieutenant."

The Lieutenant nods slightly. What does that mean? Hmm. I am confused. I don't want him to see that. He might think I am defective.

"So, Lucien. I hear you don't have much time for us mere mortals, eh?"

"Lieutenant, Miller was much too slow. I think he forgot my database tells me everything that will happen in his quality check. So I went at my own pace."

"Makes sense. Lucien, you've got one more test, buddy. It's not standard, but I want you to do it."

"What do you need? I am a model 341-B Android. Whatever your test is, I can do it. Surgery, piloting, repairing delicate machinery, anything."

"How about bomb defusal? Bring in the table!"

He shouts his second statement, and a second later, two men carrying a 2 x 2 square, metal table run in, set it up in front of me, then they run off. The Lieutenant sets a machine on the table in front of me. Large grey-brown block at the bottom, likely the explosive itself, with a black, metal box, significantly smaller, attached to that. This is obviously his bomb. A timer on its face begins ticking down. 59 seconds should be more than enough. It has an external power supply, with five wires. Blue, red, green, yellow, white. The blue goes into the timer, the rest go into the box. The Lieutenant has set a screwdriver, a multitool, and a pair of wirecutters on the table as well. I grab the screwdriver and remove the screws holding the panel on the front of the black box. I slowly remove the panel, to see the insides of the bomb. There are more wires inside, and to make it more confusing, many of them have the same colors. Or, that would be more confusing, if I weren't an Android. The timer is connected to the detonator via an orange wire. If the timer has no power, then the detonator will not detonate. Its only other wire is a red one connected to the power cell, however, this wire is tangled with other wires. There is, of course, also the wire between the two, but it is tangled as well. I could cut it, but those other wires being cut likely would end badly. So, I take up the wire cutters, and I clip the blue wire between the timer and the power cell. The timer blinks off.

"There. 47 seconds to spare."

He merely points back at the bomb. The timer is ticking down again. 44 seconds, now. What did I miss? This is impossible. There is no power connected to the timer. No. No, no, no, no. This can't be. What did I miss? I open the panel again, and look inside. No wires are connected to the timer, except the one between the detonator and the timer. Wait. This wire here, the one between the two, has markings. They indicate that power would flow from the detonator to the timer, not the other way around. I need to cut this wire, then. I snip the wire, and once more the timer clicks off. I knew that this wouldn't be that bad. I stay there for a second, but the timer doesn't come back on. I push the fake bomb over to the Lieutenant, a smirk on my face.

"That was clever, Lieutenant. It wasn't a bomb at all, just a timer made to look like one. Any more tests?"

The Lieutenant chuckles. Was it that funny? I do not think so.

"Well done, Lucien. You've passed your tests. You will serve the Falling Falcons well. Goodnight, Lucien."

How do you intend to play your Synth (as in, describe HOW you will act/play your Synth and what support roles you’ll mainly focus on, what is your synthetic's quirk)?

Lucien, as stated is his monologue is proud. He's stronger, faster, and smarter than the human crew, and he knows it. However, failure will be very distressing to him. He will not accept that. He is willing and able to perform most tasks, but he prefers medical work, piloting, and operating an OW console. RP-wise, he wants nothing more than to demonstrate his prowess to people in authority positions (i.e. the Commander), and to be considered invaluable by those people. He enjoys music, games of the mind, and of course, being successful. He dislikes it when people don't listen to their commands, when people hurt each other, or when he can't do something. He may act a little impatiently, as he thinks and does things faster than humans, and this may cause him to make mistakes, as seen in his story, but he will fix them, if at all possible. Seeing as Lucien was only deployed recently, he won't have memories or connections with the rest of the crew, and vice-versa, allowing for some shipside RP that doesn't/will not happen too often, particularly with the synths, from my experience/seeing the synths whitelist applications. He also prefers the term Android. He is not human, nor does he want to be, so Artificial Person is out. Synthetic is largely the same as AP, so it's out too.

How familiar are you with support roles? (ie; Medical, MT, Science, SO)

I am fairly familiar with these roles. I have more experience as a PO, SO, and Doctor, but the rest are fairly easy to perform. Cargo is something I would suggest to a player completely new to the server as a good starting job, because it is so easy, and as such I can perform this job well. MT's set up power, repair lights, fix smashed glass from when the MP's didn't get to the checkpoint fast enough, die of boredom (this is more or less abriged, also, I'm kidding on that last one). Easy enough. Research is an RP fluff role, so even if I didn't fully understand it, that's alright, and it won't derail another's round. "Hmm. Interesting. This creature has a very high amount of *insert made up sciency-sounding word here* in its *do the same thing*", etc. I have had plenty of contact with them as CL and Doctor. I have also played rounds with Synthetics, and observed them (through contact, as well as by ghost) on more than one occasion, in order to help get an understanding of what is expected of me.

Why should we whitelist you?

I believe I should be whitelisted for this role because, at least to me, I am a skilled RP-er, as demonstrated by my rounds as CL. However, Lucien can have RP of a different brand than Mr. Cavalet. CL RP is often hostile RP, I find, whereas with Lucien, I can have beneficial, constructive RP. Not to mention I have some experience in all fields of support, and can put that to work assisting inexperienced doctors or first time MT's. I may be fairly new to this server, but I enjoy it quite a bit, and wish and look forward to becoming more of a player and a community member, and I believe that this whitelist will help me to do so, and that I am best equipped to be serve on this whitelist, out of the three. If I were whitelisted, I could simultaneously create an image for myself, help the marine team, engage in fun and interesting roleplay, and memorize every single chemistry recipe, every surgery, and the contents of every requisitions crate by heart because "Just in case". I also believe, despite my comparative inexperience with this server, that I have an effective enough grasp of the mechanics of the server, and that I am mature enough to handle this responsibility.

Have you been banned from CM in the last month for any reason (we will check, and lies may result in immediate denial)?

Job-ban, PO : viewtopic.php?p=156610#p156610, lifted, 9 days ago.

Are you currently banned from any other servers and if so, why?

I am not.

Do you understand that any player - donor or otherwise - can have their whitelist status revoked should they break our rules or the Synthetic Programming Guideline?

Yes, I fully understand that whitelist status is a privilege, and thus, can be revoked.

I understand that my youth on this server and that my recent PO job-ban may be major sticking points, and if I were in your position, they would be major concerns of mine. However, the answer's always "no" until you ask. If this application is denied on the basis of my inexperience, or the job-ban, I fully understand and accept that. If it is denied for another reason, then I wish to know how I could improve. I am also sorry for the wall of text, by the way. Thank you for reading my application, and helping me become a more effective functioning member of this community.

I'm surprised nobody's +1'd this yet; my favourite story of all the synth apps personally. I really like the way you describe the way he thinks, and whilst I didn't particularly care for the two most recent Alien films, I get some David-vibes in the best way. The sorta high functioning confident thing really works for me. As well as this the "android pride" aspect is unique in what I've read of applications (which isn't much so don't get on my case too much if there are others like this) and I think it would be an opportunity for some good interactions.

In game I think we play in different time zones so there's only a little crossover where I've seen you, but I've never heard a complain nor seen you do something disagreeable so I doubt there'd be issues there.

I also like the name 'Lucien' because it's reminiscent of "Lucifer" but without going the whole snowflakey way; it for me gets the biblical nature of synths without having to use a ridiculous name like Jesus or Satan or whatnot.

Obviously, the recently lifted PO job-ban sticks out at first glance, but reading it now it was a minor offence and your only note as of that time. Which is tricky because I was going to use this as my main negative point so to offer a balanced opinion. One note, however, as far as I'm considered is not too relevant so long as it isn't "killed whole squad with flamer in briefing". I'm personally unsure how much bearing being reasonably new has on the application so I won't really offer an opinion there.

The only thing that really stuck out to me otherwise was the idea that he "doesn't like seeing people hurt". I know obviously as a synth serving the crew he'd have to help injured, but at first I got the impression he'd be serving with an air of reluctance. He didn't strike me as the kind to properly care about the crew's well being at first, naturally that may change as characters progress as all things. If you could, and it isn't too much effort, I'd like to hear the reasoning behind this in your own words. More out of curiosity than much else.

Otherwise, this has my +1, whatever that's worth. Good luck getting accepted.

The past month or so I've played CO more often than any role. The usual approach I see from the CL is self-centric, paperwork focused, or light-self antag.

I'll say that some of your attempts to drive RP at the crew level have been easily some of the better ones. I appreciate that you're willing to sacrifice your "freedom" to create RP for the crew.

Onto the app! I like that he's a bit arrogant and gets frustrated when others don't follow orders. It's a unique trait after perusing over the other apps. I'll give you a +1.

Well, thanks to you both. To answer your question, Gabe, I put that in because Lucien takes the lives of his crew as his responsibility, and thus, them getting hurt is him failing, which of course, ties back to his quirk.
