Request for Information - History of Colonial MArines

Post by CyxthtyCyxthCyx » 25 Sep 2017, 02:48

I've been playing here for a long time... but can't remember how long.

Know it was before baycode was installed... remember when server was threatened and there were no contributions, and the old forum.

When was the old server started? When did baycode get implemented? Why have i lost track of time? Who knows!... ?

Are there any images of the old map before baycode to jog my memory anywhere?

Ok, thanks.

negative. it was before all of these things. all of these were after baycode was implemented. didn't the server change ownership at one point in time?

Baycode was kinda always with the CM, but anyway.

Before the Pre-Alpha, aka New Eden, there was stuff yeah.

CM originally started as called "Infestation", and there was ALOT less than what you see today, marines were equipped with c20's SMG, security armor, a fuckton of griefs, free c4's and shuttle consoles that could be destroyed and nobody could repair, it was enjoyable if you could get past all that stuff, i don't remember much after what happened though.

After some period of time, there was smokebuds420, a certain host of CM, using even earlier stuff of pre-alpha and a different pre-alpha Sulaco map, with very...questionable staff and such, there was many bugs and exploits, such as chloral hydrate stunning aliens, stunprod meme origin, and many stuff, it was a gigantic mess that only SOMETIMES worked.

Then after that, and a lot of drama because staff was bad and other, smokebuds420 seemingly "retired" and stopped hosting, passing it onto a guy named Sgt.Marine, who was actually STILL smokebuds420 but with a different name, and kinda trying to be different but also not really. Stuff remained kind of the same over the course of time, nothing really new was getting implemented, it was just a bunch of weird stuff happening with ALOT of problems. This was also a time where i got permabanned by a mod, fun stuff.

At some point while i wasn't watching and busy permaed, the server kinda combined with New Eden at some point and became theirs i think, Sgt.Marine was still there, but at one point he decided "fuck all of you" and crashed everything or something, not sure, but they had to get the forums back up, at that point, Jaggerstep was the host of New Eden, while Apophis775, who before the entire CM thing was a developer, became the host i believe of CM, although i think he still kinda obeyed Jaggerstep? again i am not sure, you might wanna ask Apop himself about this entire New Eden thing. (Also i managed to get myself unbanned at this point.)

Then, a few months, perhaps a year later, Jaggerstep stepped down, and a new host came, who's name i couldn't remember but the guy was very ambitious, CM dev team was going strong, staff constantly kept changing but it was at least good in my opinion, despite all the incidents and whatnot, but at one point, New Eden was also being influenced by what has been happening on CM, and it kinda hurted them, because people seemed to think that New Eden is also CM, running 2 servers but that they are the same.

So there was a split, the time where CM became truly free, on its own big ship to sail off to, forever unattached from New Eden, which i believe went down at one point after a few months, Apop made a big damn announcement about this that i had to re-read a few times because i couldn't believe it.

And then the Pre-Alpha era officially could start, and you know the history from there.

Infestation
shuttle consoles that could be destroyed and nobody could repair

chloral hydrate stunning aliens

stunprod

remember all of that. specifically remember an entire period when the server was switching over to 'baycode'. remember an old forum... i can\t seem to remember the old map.

all of this after baycode implementation- i remember hating stunprods working on aliens... and using nitrous oxide and co2 to bomb incoming marines. remember constant decompression, problems with atmos. crashing the game, etc. plasma gas in prealpha and alpha would super-boost alien plasma generation!

CM was always baycode. Every since the beginning.

There was, years back, a different alien vs human server called Infestation Station, but it was also Baycode.

And server never really "changed ownership".

We were partnered with New Eden, but we left due to reasons.

You might be thinking of the "Baycode Update" since we had been using 2012 code, and we were updating to Bay 2014.

Someone brought up Smokebuds. I can elaborate on where he went, as we started working on a project together.

Well, more like he offered me a chance to admin (?) this new Pokémon game he was working on. It’s dead now. But that’s where he went if anyone was wondering

And SGT marine wasn’t smokebuds. Or at least if he was he was very good at being two people at once.

I’ll try and find the 4 year old byond PMs if they even exist

Close, but not exact.

Infestation Station was the original, run by SmokeBuds420 on an independent forum. eventually, He changed his name to sgt.marine (or that was a different person, it was never totally confirmeD) and they went to another forum. They didn't really continue development though. I applied to be a developer (it was closed-source) but was denied and made a moderator instead. I followed the move to NE which was basically going to be that it was hosted for free, but donations went to JaegerEStep for hosting. Shortly after, JaggerEStep was DOXed by someone who threatened to SWAT him, and he left, turning NE over to Dre, who was using the name Verbose Lucidity due to a recent coup against him when he was a headmin on NE. We stayed with them for a few months (from November to April). NE's population dwindled and CM started to rise due to more development. Me, Rahl, and Joshuu had taken Colonial Marines (which was renamed from Infestation Station at some point during the time we were at New Eden) to a new redesign and had moved from "infestation station" where everyone had CR20s and Bullet Proof Vests to Pre-Alpha where you had armor, lore weapons, etc. Following some decisions to form a "council" on NE that was unfavorable to CM and gave NE far more control, me and Rahl left New Eden (coincidentally, on April 20th). We took the Codebase with us, and removed our hosting files and scripts from the NE computer. There was some small drama, but everything was chill in the end. About 4 months later, we launched ALPHA. which was a major rework onto newer code, closed source, and had an entirely new weapon/projectile system.
The rest from that, is history and is "mostly" correct in the wiki.

Actually, Smokebuds was more of the second host, the original server, atleast when I started and got dragged along through them, was hosted by Captain English, the forums were on the NSS Gamers forums during that time. Then CE disappeared for a while i think, and the server was picked up a little later by Smokebuds.

Not the complete start since my memory isnt that detailed, but it should be the basic info for the origins.

I remember when some server swapped to some weird custom map that was very bare bones. We were still using C20rs and similar I believe. Also Engineers had to build APCs in rooms just to get the power going.

I also recall when the health system swapped from the simplistic /tg/ system to the more complex Baymed which resulted in a lot of negative reactions at the time.
