Here is my story-line:
The 30th progressions:

Nuclear Fusion creates the possibility of almost infinite energy from very small sources.
2034:
Cryo mechanisms are perfected
2036:
Laser weaponry is now a viable option, including small hand-held blasters.
2040:
Ion tech is introduced ... the first shield is introduced as a counter to laser weaponry and electronics and electronic guided systems.
2044:
Plasma tech is introduced ... plasma shield blocks radiation, somewhat of lasers, and even hard projectiles.
Plasma sword is introduced and can block/absorb and deflect plasma shots and lasers.
2046:
First FTL engine is developed, but not at maximum efficiency.
2047:
First inter-stellar craft sails off with basic plasma shielding, a basic FTL engine, and limited laser weapons
2048:
Contact with intelligent alien life A1, diplomacy is successful and A1 teach us of the "Galactic Rules" (I will write this later)
They also introduce a universal translator that is useful in diplomacy.
Present game day
The Century of the 6 Wars:

Encounter with organized hostile alien race A2, negotiations are not acceptable, tensions escalate.
2052:
Tensions escalate to the point where humans have their first inter-stellar war with a civilization.
2060:
Humans are miraculously victorious against many odds, and A2 is exterminated according to galactic protocol.
Lots of technology is improved, especially FTL travel time.
2067:
Humans propose to one another to unite as one civilization
2070:
Negotiations fail and nuclear weapons are fired, but are ineffective due to advanced shield technology protecting cities and country-sides.
2072:
The United Earth Federation (UEF) wins over the Galactic Confederation and the Soviet Earth Progression.
2073:
Earth is united, things are a lot easier to accomplish, including anti-matter production.
2075:
Alien metal-type race contacts us, very hard to negotiate as they want to unify and "assimilate" all living matter.
Aliens are designated A3
2076:
A one-year war between UEF and A3 is resolved by careful diplomacy, though it is a VERY loose cease-fire, peace is achieved, and boundaries are marked.
2080:
Second "Humans" are discovered, exact biological match is to be found between the two "sides" and scientists on both ends are baffled, they are the United Federation of Planets (UFP), but are still designated as A4
2086:
The reason for this is found, apparently a wormhole on earth a very long time ago transported an entire town into another planet, records on UEF soil support this.
A petition to merge together is put forth.
2088:
Negotiations grind to a screeching halt as a nervous and panicking UEF Lt. opens fire on, and destroys, a UFP cruiser.
2088:
Open war ensues between UEF and UFP
2090:
FTL breakthrough makes FTL drives twice as fast, tech is copied by UFP from incapacitated ship.
2098:
War drags on as UEF encounter alien humanoids A5 destined on dominating the galaxy.
2100:
A three-way war breaks out.
2102:
UEF and UFP unite against A5 under the condition that they remain separate entities for at least 6 years after defeating A5 along with a cease fire for the same duration.
2122:
War drags on for many years and is costly in addition to deadly.
2126:
The UEF and UFP suffer major losses and ground.
2127:
Leaders meet to discuss about bringing A3 into the war.
2128:
A3 is brought in under the condition they "assimilate" only half of the ships they destroy
2130:
War is brought to a hyper-cataclysmic end with A5 detonating a anti-thermo-nuclear warhead generating a megaton yield of 3 hundred billion yottatons of TNT. Equivalent to that of a 1a supernova explosion.
Major damage to 3 super-capital fleets on all sides, crippling all 3 factions to a crawl, no warning was given or sign, since the explosion moved at nearly the speed of light.
2132:
3 Factions re-build to 3/4 of pre-war strength.
2134:
All sides re-built, A3 joins post-war negotiations, very un-happy.
2135:
All sides have reached a compromise, boundaries are staked, and a memorial is made.
2136:
UEF and UFP tense as the treaty ends.
2140:
Neither side attacks and negotiations are successful, a defensive pact is formed, meaning if one is attacked, the other will automatically rush into the war and help.
Both remain separate entities.
2142:
Ancient race A6 is discovered, diplomacy comes easy and technology is VASTLY improved.
2145:
A mis-fire from A3 sparks war between humans and A3
2150:
War comes to a peaceful end, A3 is crippled, but negotiates peace.
2151 - 2250:
A Century of Peace, tech is advanced, and discovery proceeds to reveal lots of alien life.
The Great War:

An inter-galactic regime enters the galaxy, exactly like the humans, but un-clouded by emotion.
2253:
All attempts to teach galactic rules are ignored, and they open fire on many civilizations and inter-galactic war ensues.
The Sentinels get involved (basically the galactic police).
2255:
War is at a stalemate
2260:
War is pushed by an infamous dreadnought from the regime known as OPUS.
2264:
The galaxy loses, and a gamble is made on the OPUS.
2265:
A Hyper-Cataclysmic, Thermo-anti-nuclear bomb with the force of 6 hundred billion yottatons of TNT is detonated near the OPUS, severely crippling it to the point of un-usability, bomb is more powerful than a 1a supernova.
2266:
The regime retreats and inter-galactic travel is discovered by salvaging the OPUS.
