Jenner - Mapper Application
Byond ID: JennerH
Age: 17
Gender: Male
How would you define yourself? (Coder, Mapper, Spriter): Mapper, though I have a basic grasp of coding
If Coder, what languages?
Javascript
Any previous experience developing with SS13?
No
Proof of any previous or current work:
Leaving it blank for now
How well do you know Git?
Not at all
Your primary job is server development, not policing the server. You may be given Moderator-level of access but you should *not* be invoking any administrative actions unless there are no moderators or Admins online. Do you understand? (Yes/No)
Yes
Anything else you'd like to add?
I'm really enjoying the server, and Have sunk hours upon hours into it already, and the reason I wanna join the dev team is to create some of the map ideas I've come up with since playing these past few months. I figured why ask someone to make something when you can do it yourself, ya know? Anyway, I have a rough grasp on the map maker, been practicing with baystation. I looked a bit at the code and I'm sure I could help with something besides mapping if someone gave me the rundown, shouldn't be too different from JavaScript (I'm taking classes on it, and I have experience with Autodesk, and programs such as sony vegas and gimp, so I can navigate complex programs fairly easily)

Re: Jenner - Mapper Application
do you have any samples at all of mapping youve done? We would need to see some samples to guage if you would be a good fit/hit our quality expectations.
that said, I worry a bit about your age range. We generally have a team of at least 3 years your seniors. The transitional phase from teenager to adult can be a bit rough and we need flexibility, reliability, communication, and maturity. If you happen to be a great mapper, you are going to have to really prove those traits.

Re: Jenner - Mapper Application
Not going to lie, applying without prexisting works to show doesn't give a good first impression.

Re: Jenner - Mapper Application
I'm actually in the process of building a small mining colony thing as an example based on what other applicants had to do, just haven't been at the computer to add itSnypehunter007 wrote: ↑10 Nov 2017, 13:47Not going to lie, applying without prexisting works to show doesn't give a good first impression.

Re: Jenner - Mapper Application
See the problem is that you should apply only AFTER you have work to show. Because thats all we have to go off of.

I know, jumped the gun a bit here, but it's almost done anyway so I'll show you screenshots when I'm home.

Re: Jenner - Mapper Application
I lean sort of with Nic. Especially since the application says to give examples. You could have made the application when you were ready, instead of rushing it.

I couldn't upload the pictures because they're too big or something, so I put them in a drive folder. Tell me if they aren't viewable, but this is what I got so far. I don't like the hub as it is, but I'm pretty satisfied with the caves considering how small the map is

There is just . . . nothing there, honestly.Jenner wrote: ↑10 Nov 2017, 17:54https://drive.google.com/open?id=12GH2Q ... wMZ11fPsDT

I only worked on it a tiny bit, but I figured you'd want something to look at. could you give me an idea of what you wanted?

Re: Jenner - Mapper Application
we are looking for something a lot more complex- we ideally want a lot of building definition [each building looking unique, and its purpose is understood], and looking for better gameplay flow. What youve shown is too simplistic and limited to too few unique tiles and objects.
If youd like to improve, I suggest studying some level design for games, and some of the maps we currently have.
I dont think you are ready right now- you are a bit young, and this really isnt what we are searching for in a mapper right now. But I think if you spend some time making more maps, studying, and improving on that then you should reapply in a year or two, if you are still interested then.
I am voting to deny this, but wish you the best of luck in your future mapmaking adventures.

Re: Jenner - Mapper Application
This is supposed to be a mining colony, yeah?
The biggest thing in mapping is to make things look like they have a reason for being there. Right now, you have a central building, a (what I presume to be) landing pad, mining caves, and a side building (for storing mining equipment?).
The problem currently is that you have almost nothing on the map. The only somewhat "developed" areas is what looks to be a medbay. Nothing else is actually developed as an area.
I can't judge you based on your skill at making a map when there isn't much there. I can only, unfortunately, judge you based on what isn't here.
Unfortunately, I'm going to have to give a -1. I think you should probably fill out the map more, work on some other maps, then come back if you wish to apply again.

Re: Jenner - Mapper Application
yeah, I'm gonna try to redo this on the TG codebase, because the Baystation code I got has a bunch of missing assets or something. none of the maps would even open so I could get a reference. anyway, I'll work on it a bit and come backSnypehunter007 wrote: ↑10 Nov 2017, 18:42This is supposed to be a mining colony, yeah?

I'm going to close this for now, feel free to apply again as soon as you have some work you can show for us, thanks for the interest.
