Dropship evac

Post by Jroinc1 » 16 Dec 2017, 19:07

Is there any IC reason why the DS cannot be used to evac remaining marines? Not "go to a new star system", but "land on the other side of the planet, or hang out in orbit for 17 days till rescue arrives"?

I understand the OOC reasons for it, but I was wondering about IC obstacles.

They probably wont be known about. Also, there is not exactly alot of food and water in the Dropship.

It's kinda obvious... why would you take the dropships instead of the whole ship? If the planet is lost, theres really no need to go back down...

He is not landing on the same place. He is landing on the other side.

it's a dropship to tranpsort troops to a planet nearby from the main part of the ship. And it cannot travel in space for too long anyway or else it's gonna run out of fuel, stuck in the middle of space drifting towards anything out there

I think the clue is in the name. "Dropship" is probably intended only for Atmospheric Re-entry/Exit in a vertical axis. It can't travel the same distance as a modern day airliner jet since it wouldn't have enough fuel for such a journey.
Aliases: Kathryn "Clone" Hynes and Merric Hughes. May or may not be necessarily competent.

Either way, no point. The colony is already fucked up beyond repair.

You're misunderstanding my point.

The DS is NOT going to do an open-boat journey across light-years to another star system (which it can't do), or even across AU's to another planet in-system (if there was one).

I'm talking about throwing some stores on, detaching from the Almayer, waiting 20-30 min for the orbit to bring it over another part of the world, and landing on the same world, preferably on another continent, where the PFC's can pitch tents and subsist on MRE's and salt until a rescue ship shows up in orbit.

Assuming you mean legit FULLY evac the Almayer, that just would not happen. The Almayer is fifty times more expensive than the colony itself. USCM would legit fucking find their asses and kill them if they abandoned the ship for no reason. When the xenos start to come up, there wont be enough time to really RP out evacing, because the really only time you CAN evac is when the dropship is on collision course... so uh, yeah... wouldn't work

I have seen that situation RP’d a few times, usually involves one coward P.O. and a few marines, maybe the liaison, fleeing on the Normandy back down to the planet. Would just mean they’d have to survive two weeks until rescue arrived.

I mean can't there be a special rations in a dropship. Just like those I believe escape rafts, its those boats that those larger ships have on the side. Most of the time it contains rations, or special provisions for the escapees to survive on, and it would be cool if you can ask to the hangar during an attack and fly to a refuel station or some sort where you relax.

I actually remember reading this somewhere on the aliens wiki, but law requires all spaceborne vessels and craft must contain either cryotubes for 2 weeks worth of rations, dropships included.

ah, i've seen youve never pried the floor panels of the dropship up...
no seriously though, i suppose the supplies would be stored under them & in a roof cargo area.

Well the simple reason here is because there is no game to be played there. Just travel back to the planet and pretend you won? Are you asking for a map addition here or what?

In addition to everything said, I would like to point out that we dont know what a dropship is rated for in terms of maximum occupation. If it has 2-3 weeks worth of food, is that purely for the crew? If it can feed passengers then what is the exact number in case of too many on board.

You also have to worry about oxygen, cram 30 men into a box for 30 minutes and its going to get hard to breath, we dont know what the oxygen system is rated for either. Lastly trying this maneuver on something like Ice Colony will result in much hardship from the weather.

All in all, its far more realistic to just shoot down the dropship in orbit, or nuke the colony rather then abandoning ship.
