Mortar tips

Post by Vispain » 24 Feb 2018, 17:26

So...After seeing the Abandoned Mega FOBs topic I just thought I'd throw this one down.
What tips do you have for Mortar usage?

Mortar assigned Engineer:
Setup a Mortar pit further inside the FOB
Have your shells put in their own pile on a table in the mortar pit.
Make a paper detailing a location and the coordinates of zones to fire if the FOB is sieged in a particular location. Basically write down the coordinates for likely zones of congregation by hostiles if the FOB is sieged. This way you don't need to go and have the locations found on the fly.

Personal Good Observation of On The Go Mortar fire support coordination
1. Mortar Engineer coordinate with your SL for cords to fire upon if possible (your squad may be on FOB - If so 2. is even more important. ).
2. Coordinate with other Engineers from other squads using engineering comms. Those other engineers can then use THEIR squad comms to get coords from their SL and relay them to you, the mortar engineer, via engineering comms.
3. Treat the Mortar as you would CAS.

An Example in Action:
SL needs a mortar strike. They use binocs to get the coordinates. They inform their combat engineer over squad comms of the coordinates to fire (for example, 227 Longitude, 145 Latitude). Engineer replies with "Copy" or "Relaying coords". Engineer relays coords over Engineering comms to Mortar engineer. Mortar Engineer loads and inputs coords. Mortar Engineer replies over Engineering comms, "Firing". Combat Engineer says "Incoming" over squad comms as Mortar Engineer fires the shell.

Before you go, "AGH! This is way too long and complicated..." I'll point out that I used this tactic. I was the Combat Engineer and I informed my SL to tell me coords. Then I'd relay them using engineering comms to the mortar engineer.

Edit: I removed FOB tips part. Seems extra. This is more just for Mortar tips.
Feel free to add and criticize.
