So a simple question I'm curious about. Why do some marines absolutely refuse to wear their helmets, even to the point of preferring to go to the brig when the CO orders them to wear them?

Some marines just want to watch the world burn.

Snowflake effect. All marines look the same under a helmet. But berets, headbands or nothing at all shows their face more, make them distinctive and recognizable. Instead of just an ant in an ant hill.

The same does not happen to donor with custom items. Those wear their custom gear even when they need no armor, such as the Doom doctor. For the same reason.

In all honesty it only makes a difference when you're fighting mature+ ravs or elite+ hunters, which is enough to make people want to make their sprite look better.

Helmets are badass and they do protect against some damage.

Especially when you put those goggles on them and it's something outta Desert Storm. Or put a Zippo, cigarette pack, a playing or even two EAT bars for the Vietnam look.

I really like personalizing mine. Grab that labeler and give it your name.

Not using a helmet means that a Runner can destroy your head in a few slashes. If you used one, you could shrug off plenty of them and survive.

Well, I'm usually a medic so Med HUD + ballistic goggles + helmet. I just like the ability to carry the 2 protein bars. It sucks as a doctor to become hungry as you're carrying patients around

Murry's headband is actually a re-spritted helmet. He gets to be unique yet very-well protected.

Robust xenos never target the head, so helmet or not don't really make a difference in actual gameplay.

You have to sacrifice 4 barrel chargers and ahelp summon the headstaff by offering your marine tears, at least 3 jars, before having a chance to find the spare labeler.

Gasmask and the ballistic goggles in my helmet used to be my old helmet load out.
Sadly, I must now choose due to gasmask update so I just wear sunglasses if I am a marine higher than Pfc.

Other than that, helmets are for holding your cigs and zippo.
