Why is this game not being developed to be played outside byond
There is a zombie game from byond that can be played on steam. Why not make this game also steam playable?

It's been discussed, but unless BYOND full dies or there is some huge motivating factor to move it off the engine, it won't happen.

Last i checked most SS13 clone outside of byond have failed horribly

1. SS13 is a good medium for it 2. It is already coded to BYOND and SS13 3. BYOND, and by extension SS13, are both free-to-play. 4. CM would lose its charm(And its playerbase) if it got moved off SS13.

Most SS13 standalone projects, even those that didn't get outside of initial kitchen discussion, lacked determination and/or focus - something SS13 dev is also famous for. Original concept itself is actually quite boring when you think of it outside of newfag "wow" box. CM is a strange kid, one that realized an old rule of massive online games - "numbers = quality". Yes, it might be boring, yes, mechanics might be lacking, yes something is overpowered or nerfed to shit again - but point is - when you put 200 people in one round at the same time this stuff doesn't matter, thanks to all resulting action and social interactions. Hell, we managed to have fun with oldTG and that stuff was just a tiny bit more complex than your good ol' paper and pen (well, aside from atmos, ha-ha).
There's also Lifeweb, game that went a totally different way and focused more on deep changes to original SS13 mechanics, characters, their lives and all that crazy stuff that happens in neo-feudal laser shows.
To be honest everything else barely matters at this point: dying and reviving original SS13, CM and LW is all modern world of spacemen has to offer.
If there'll be a successful standalone one day it'll need some radical changes to original SS13 gameplay, fresh ideas and general understanding that copying old game over and over again is a dead end or even a dead start - just like for all these people who tried before.

This goes for ANY SS13 based game, whether it be Goon, TG, CM, LFWB, LS, etc. I don't see any of these games moving off of BYOND on their own. The only cause that I see that has the potential to do this is the death of BYOND. Otherwise, don't plan on seeing people leave BYOND just yet.

So the game can be put on steam. If I'm not mistaken there is a byond game that happens to have its own launcher but it's basically byond in a small package. But it's on steam. If we're talking about developing it on its own engine. That's actually tough. Like super tough because the greatness of byond is the built in netcode. Sorting that stuff is trying to untangle a wire octopus that is actually alive. It can be done and is done all the time. But someone needs to put in the effort with the proper credentails.

I believe it is possible to create a game a lot like/better than cm that works similarly for something like steam. That said, the resources, skill, time investment, marketing, legal, localization, and other development issues make that very hard without a dedicated budget people can sustain themselves on.
This is something i think and speak about a lot, but it isnt something I believe we can do right now with what we have.

You mean rewrite everything that took 15 years to naturally develop with large team of nerds the THING that was coded on an engine that took 1 guy 18 years to finally git really good?

Whoever develops new SS13 will either have it developed for free and have to push others to join his "engine", or will have some monetary profit in head which will alienate current SS13 players
Now there is a solution - code conversion. Basically have a tool that converts any DM code into language that engine will use. But boy that is hard as fuck

I think Byond is well suited for this kind of game (namely ss13). It wouldn't be easy to run a highly detailed FPS with over 200 people.
