How much does a CL know about the xenos?

Post by Hoodedhero » 07 Jun 2018, 05:17

I wonder, how much would a CL know about the research planet/station-side?

S/he would probably know at least something right?

I got beaten to death as CL by the survivors of a prison station map because they roleplayed that the company was doing experiments on the Xenos and was the cause of the disaster.

ICly I think the CL is supposed to be just as clueless as everyone else

Think about Burke of Aliens 2, that's the type of CL that most of players should archive to do, but the CL is totally unaware of W-Y intentions on any map.

I feel like it depends a lot on the map in many cases. On LV, for instance, the public front of the colony - a xenoarchaeological dig site - is 100% true. WY could legitimately have never known about the xeno eggs until the colonists broke into that section of the caves. But on prison, the presence of the research labs is hard evidence of a very deliberate attempt to study xenos and that plus the huge "CLASSIFIED" label on the map means the liaison is at bare minimum going to need a solid cover story for what was "really" going on.

When I play CL, I address it by having Audrey be part of the Government Relations Division instead of the Special Projects Division and merely being ordered to report to the Special Projects director for this operation without being told why. Depending on how the round goes and what information makes it up to her it could very easily range from "the Company obviously created and lost control of these things and I need to keep it quiet" to "this new species the marines just discovered is a goldmine of bioresearch applications and we need secure exclusive rights to exploit it".

Retro thats exactly what I put in my fax signature right down to Government Relations.

The way I play my CL's is basically an assistant director stuck in a department that only ever throws mountains of paperwork at their local government branch and receiving the same in return. So its a dead end job probably the highest rank you can expect to make in a long time. So when the legendary Special Projects contacts your boss (you've only heard about them in hushed tones) naturally your superior realizes foul shit may be afoot and sends you instead. The CL realizes its his chance to score it big and will at least suspect it might have been a company fuck up. When the benos show up its hard not to put two and two together.

On the other hand I think survivors often have way more IC knowledge than they would have. They are pretty much always very hostile towards CL's right from the start.

But it may be valid, these guys survived a whole hell down there because the Company they worked for. If i was one of them, I'll problably call the Mp or such to take care of the CL.

CL knows as much as the marines do until first contact/fax. If you try and roleplay otherwise you could get in trouble

Personally, I keep people like Edmund almost entirely in the dark about things, but, his being a typical Corporate stooge anyway, he generally tries to downplay the situation once it escalates, in typical lawyer fashion.

Regardless, since it's already in the lore that a few colonies have gone dark by this point, it's usually assumed by the rest that you know what's going on, when you could really be as clueless as they are.

Good luck proving your innocence in either case, and be prepared for the Marines to go Brotherhood of Steel on your ass.

This is a very good way to play CL.

The Corporate Liaison being the role with the greatest potential for memes roleplay that it is, I like to get creative by having Amelia often conflate the Xenomorphs with another WY project that has NOTHING to do with them. For example, she was once convinced that the Xenomorphs were an escaped species of lizard people captured by WY that produce the secret ingredient for Souto Classic from their tearducts. She only changed her mind when she realized they were straight up slaughtering people and secreted acid instead of nectar which is actually the secret ingredient for LIME Souto so it couldn't have been them obviously!

EDIT: This thread brings up another great question: What about Predators? IF Weyland-Yutani knew anything about the Yautja -- which I have no idea if it would or not -- I'd imagine they'd want to keep it hush-hush that there's an intelligent alien race actively treating humans like game. They'd probably maintain a close relationship with the Dutch Dozen -- although I'd think they'd be more interested in capturing a Predator than killing it.

A long, long time ago, back on the Sulaco, I was Cole Lloyd as the Liason.

Admins gave Delta Sopoforic Darts, and told them to capture a Yautja for me. They were unsuccessful. Company sends PMCs with hand-held syringes of Sopoforic?

They captured it, buckle-cuffed it to a gurney, and wheeled it to my office.

Good memories.

CL know as much as anyone aboard the ship, however, their main goal should always be evac with a specimen. Dead or alive, for testing.

The CL should know as much or as little as is required to make an interesting RP experience for everyone else. It can range from "this project is critical to WY and the Marines should be convinced to recover samples" to "I know it's classified and shit is bad so it's cover-up time" all the way to "I'm literally just an accountant managing the colony's finances, the fuck is going on?!". It all depends on how the round is playing it and what can lead in the most interesting direction. Oftentimes as CL I won't have an idea of how much Val knows until at least after the mini breifing that happens in Cic, and a lot of the times won't fully figure out until deployment. It all depends on what you think is the best way to help keep the round interesting for the other poor bastards stuck shipside.

I'd personally prefer CLs getting a paragraph similiar to Survivor round start, or a memo from WY outlining their personal mission that can vary round from round to this being a one off incident with little to no foreknowledge on the part of the CL to being painfully aware that Xenos were being studied and bred by WY and the CL being sent as an agent to recover what ever research they can in addition to any samples they can get their hands on (without raising too much suspicious from the Marines.)

If the CL's starting knowledge isn't consistent, then marines can't metagame and lean on the CL with some token attempt at RP to get them to spill the worms about the Xenos and best tactics for fighting them. Which even if the CL knows, they should probably not be informing the marines anything they don't already know given the sensitive nature of that information.

I do think that David's suggestion would be a great implementation of a bit of spice to the round, making it more interesting.
