Description of the incident: So my name is Archibaldamius Methalusima in game, I've had this name for over 2 weeks now. Every other staff I've had interactions with have never brought up my name or anything, some have even chuckled over it as its a bit wacky (Who's name isnt wacky on the game?) and then Solarmare comes along and says my name is unreasonable. I responded with "How is it unreasonable?" and he never actually got to the point of that he would just say that he found it unreasonable and "Recommended" that I should change it to either "Archibald something" to make it shorter, which I said "Why should I have to make it shorter? You guys have a character limit, also this is the name I chose and I like and I've gotten many pals if I change my name then they wont recognize me and I'll have to explain it which means its just more tedious for me" then he warned me saying "change it or tomorrow you'll be banned" or something along those lines. Today comes and he messages me saying that I havent changed it and I'll be banned for 3 hours. I said "just because my name doesnt meet up with your standards doesnt mean its unreasonable. Then I pointed to several people named "Methaluselah, Archibaldamius, even people named Elimilec. Just because they havent heard a name before doesnt mean its too unreasonable. Then he told me to change it again, which I said "Its just my name there is nothing special about it people even started calling me Archie" there are also people in the game with the last names of "Aushwitz" and theres Sal Spaghetti Spanelli and Solarmare chooses me out of the crowd to demand that I change my name because its not fitting for them? Then there was the issue saying my name was from a character from a game in 2002 which he said "You cant have pop culture names" well searching up the character turns out his name is Methaluselah (This guy is a character from the game Overlord, which was a game I liked back in 2002, the guy was a minor character and was there just for a joke, the sad part is no one even remembers this god tier game. Here's his wiki so yall can see his name http://overlord.wikia.com/wiki/Archie ) If some guy named his character "Rich Jackson" and said "Yeah I picked the name because the guy from Halo" You wouldnt make him change his name because its hardly a name anyone remembers from Halo. Point is, its just a name that shares the same first name as a character from a game.

How you would punish the accused: I dont think there should be a punishment at all. My name wasnt bothering anyone and no one else had a problem with it but Solarmare and with people running around with the name "Aushwitz" as a last name and there is even a guy named "Richard Chesterfield IV" and he refers to himself as "Richard Cheese" the sort of meme singer. I get if my name was "Josef Stalin" or "Captain Price" but my name is literally Archibaldamiu, which was a common feudal european name and it shares the first name of a character from a game in 2002. My ban doesnt even seem just because of the reasoning behind it, my name was too long for him I guess.

So if any other staff find an issue with it you'll be banned for retaining that name, if it matters that much you can shorten it as I suggested but you do need to change it. Character limit is large enough in part to allow for nicknames as well.

Just because you think its absurd doesnt mean others think that around the world. Like I said, it was an old Feudal European name and was very common for the time. Just because you wouldnt name your child "Al-asad" or something like that doesnt mean others wont either because you think its a wacky name.

Just Googling the name leads me to a few instances of people identifying it as "rediculous", and quite honestly, I agree.

As per our rules, it's obviously not unique since it belongs to another game character. But "unique" in this sense isn't well-defined. Unique to other players in-game? Unique meaning different first and last?

It's not lore-friendly since the character comes from a Medieval game and by your own admission is a Feudal European name.

Our naming rules are very open to interpretation because there's no sure way to regulate names that I'm aware of. I toyed with the idea of changing the rule to state that "if the name can be found on Wikipedia or at the top 3 results of a Google Search it can't be used", but that would mean a lot of our long-time players would need to change their names, and more rediculous names like Archibaldamius Methalusima would be allowed. I'm open to suggestions.

In the meantime, Solarmare made a judgement call. Not everyone will be in favor of it, and there's reasonable points against his decision, but I tend to agree with it. There's lots of other options you have to choose from without going over the top like that name does. Even Archie Methalusima is better.

The ban was placed due to your refusing to change the name and then rejoining with that same name despite being warned not to do so, clearly ignoring staff instructions. I understand that you believe the name is reasonable, but Solarmare did not agree and you are expected to comply with staff instructions, especially those given by an admin, and brng concerns up in the forums, not disregard them because you don't agree with them.

This report is merely to examine the validity of Solarmare's actions, and I don't see any breach of protocol on their part so no action will be taken against them. That said, you are free to appeal the usage of your name in the appeals subforum.
