Grenades are the only way to push a choke. Flamethrowers slow a push down / buff ravagers, so the only proper way to dig the bugs out is to nade em. Preferably with HE to toss them around like rag dolls.

To be honest Shrapnel does do quite some damage to ayys as well, Provided you know how to use em.
For one case If you are in the almayer they could be quite useful for cucking in small rooms, maintenance shafts or prison.

But as you said they could really backfire hard, As I've seen as a Overwatcher Delta team once had a ASL B18 Spec who was only using Shrapnel nades who FF'ed so hard that the Deltards were almost wiped "Just to say it was a person who was not a griefer but a trusted medical main/support." But in general make a marco shouting Shrapnel or Nade out "they both get the message though" and hope that the Marines have a Marco for rest.

Does resting let the shrapnel fly over you?

Yup, I frequently just combat rest to avoid being blown to shreds when I play xeno or marine. I don't know why the meta is schrapnel, as I personally find HE more useful.

Shrapnel can do mega damage if IF Used Correctly, Otherwise It can FF Harder then a Burst AP Baldie

I've rarely seen shrapnel be the end of a xeno. Honestly, it doesn't even stun. At least the RPG will get you a kill, and the HE allows you to finish them off.

Throw multiple frag with great timing. The AoE will crit them all.

Or do my lazy tactic. Hide 4ish nades beneath a backpack before a xeno push.

Flame backpack.

Rest.

Stand up after 4 waves of shrapnel obliterated anything standing.
