I will never understand why people complain about the fate of Japan in '45 when compared to history anyone else could have expected to end up like Carthage: extinct at the cultural level. Such an event has not happened in so long now that I sometimes suspect that people forget that it's possible. It's not just steamrolled tribal cultures that can disappear; whole advanced societies can be swept away if they get in scraps that they can't win.

Japan was going to be defeated either way. By the time the Allies had opted to nuke Japan, the USSR had declared war on Japan. The bombs were dropped partially because of potential Soviet claims. The allies didn't want the Soviet Union gaining any level of influence over Japan or it's territories.

Jesus Christ son whoever taught you WWII history needs to be sent off to McDonald's.

There's many reasons why it was nuked. Preventing the USSR from being able to grabble at it was one of them. Another was that launching a land invasion of the place likely would have killed at least twice as many people as dropping the bombs did. Since the Japanese already had plans put in motion to send waves of brainwashed civilians at US invasion troops.

As it happened, the Japanese Emperor personally OK'd the surrender and survived a coup attempt to prevent his doing so. From that symbolic gesture the Japanese more or less stood down. One way of envisioning the bombs' usage is like a bandaid being ripped off really quickly and getting it over with rather than slowly and agonizingly.

If the home islands HAD been invaded...holy smokes. It would have easily been the bloodiest, ugliest thing in US military history. One giant, years-long, hate-and-resentment fueling version of Wounded Knee set in the Pacific.
