Mentor/Helper System

Post by Feweh » 07 Jul 2015, 18:52

Summary (a quick, 2-3 sentence summary):
Essentially a system to help newbies out or people with basic game-play/role-play related questions.

Benefits (How this will benefit the server and game as a whole):
Help new players figure out the basics of CM through a easy to access question prompt that directly connects them to a Mentor.
Avoids alot of OOC in IC from new players trying to figure things out.

Details (Description of how you think this would work, the benefits, etc):
Benefits are obvious, less adminhelps about generic questions, players in important roles can ask on the fly questions without having to open a Wiki up.
Creates a new position for players who want to help out CM.

Implementation (Optional, if you have an idea how to implement it):
White-Listed or Admin chosen players only.
Also a bunch of SS13 Servers have this in, sure it's quite easy to work out.
Coding?

+1 for reasons explained, it'll reduce ahelps which lowers the workload for the moderators and admins.

Because if I have to answer one more, "How do I talk on the alpha squadchat?" question, I'm gonna fucking stab Jones.
I'm stressing way too hard about what to put here, so I'm just gonna leave it blank.... or....

Here's my idea in chronological order from highest rank to lowest rank:
  • Host
  • Vice-Host
  • Head Administrator
  • Head Moderator
  • Elder Admin
  • Junior Admin
  • Helper

Its best to seperate Helper/Mentor from staff positions completely.

This way you get people who actually want to mentor.. rather than the people who are just using the Mentor/Helper position as a stepping stone into a higher position.

If you classify it as a staff position and use the ranking system you have there UM itll create conflict.

This doesn't really make any sense. All mentors get is a special msay where they can talk to eachother and admins can also chat in and access to ahelps and admin(mentor)PMs. Some servers seperate ahelps and mhelps(or in this servers case, bughelps adminhelps and RPhelps so it wouldn't hurt to throw in mentorhelps) but it doesn't actually do anything except put their name on staffwho. There's no space for a stepping stone people wouldn't get just by being a good player, and you'd need to be a good player in the first place to be a mentor.

Why don't you just have it like...
  • Host
  • Vice-Host
  • Head Admin
  • Head Modertaor
  • Senior Admin
  • Admin
  • Trial Admin
  • Moderator
  • Trial Moderator
  • Mentor

+1 to this whole concept!

also, how about adding in a sheet of paper to the lockers describing each role and any specific controls or commands for that role e.g Radio channels and how to use explosives correctly?

I Can add some of that to the wiki if need be but i'm fairly sure most of it is already on the wiki.

EDIT: I just double checked the wiki to make sure we do have those specific things and we do.

I don't think youre grasping the concept of why its better to seperate mentor from the staff ranking system.

By stepping stone I ment people will only apply to mentorship just so they can become a Moderator later. These creates a issue where people would want to shed their mentor tag in favor of a higher position.

Where as if you had it mentors not related to staff you'd have a positive strong team of mentors who wouldnt jump ship anytime a staff position became available.

I agree with the taking mentor out of the stepping stone to a higher rank.

So basically it should still work how it does currently with Tm,M,TA,A then have a Mentor separate from these but they have only Msay to help new people on the server etc.

+1 Other servers have this and it works well. I already have a couple players in mind that would be perfect for this. Give them just ahelp and mchat verbs, MAYBE player panel to check health and notes. But this would prevent us from answering "how do I talk to my squad?", "how do I use hivemind?", "how do I attach a flashlight?", "how do I use the MG?", "can I make napalm grenades?", "how do I escape the nest?", and, worst of all, "I'm new, how do I play LO?" questions.

I like the concept, but I also think that it should be completely separate from staff positions (in terms of getting moderator and such). It should just be experienced players that wanna help out a tad. The requirements to be a mentor shouldn't be very strict nor should they feel like the have to get on or else they'll lose their position.

I also support this mainly just to be able to stop using the three main mod copy and paste responses:
1. "How do I hivemind?" Response: ":a"
2. "How do I speak on coms?" Response: "Examine your headset" or "use ";" before you type"
3. "How do I do (x) thing?" Response: "Go to wiki"

"I'm new, how do I commander?"

I die a little more every time I see it.

They shouldn't be there to enforce the rules( Leave that to the mods/admins ), more just to help the new players and answer any question or if they can't give a link to what can etc.
