A visible countdown to freedom timer

Post by Lostmixup » 06 Aug 2015, 19:23

Summary (a quick, 2-3 sentence summary):
Due to how long it now takes to get out of nest it'd be sweet if we could get a timer in the status screen that'd tell us how long we've got till we break free.

Benefits (How this will benefit the server and game as a whole):
In general it'd make being trapped as a marine a lot less painful just because you could better plan out what you'll do when you get out and such. It'd also make it easier to check other things or do something else when trapped and unable to contact for help (a.k.a. being survivor).

Details (Description of how you think this would work, the benefits, etc):
Essentially, slap a countdown timer onto the status screen when you start trying to get out of a nest. The timer would only appear if you've started resisting getting out of a nest obviously, and would disappear once you are freed. The timer itself can consist of how many minutes you have left and how many seconds till you escape; like the ETA countdown for the shuttle.

Optimally this timer would only appear when escaping from nest, but I wouldn't be opposed to having it whenever you're attempting to escape being restrained.

IF it can be done, I give this a +1, Would make it feel less agonizingly long when you are attempting to escape.

I wouldn't mind this as it doesn't make too much sense a marine wouldn't know how close to being free he was. +1 I'd put it in the Status tab.

I don't see any reason not to have this, makes being trapped in a nest a bit less of a pain in the arse without shifting any sorta balance. +1

+1, a marine has to understand how "unstuck" he is.

+1 for above reasons. It makes 0 sense for a marine to be like 'Damn wonder how close I am to bein- Oh hey I'm up!" Alien: "Trololololol, nope. *tackle, nest*"

I've wanted this mainly so that I can RP with the aliens more when captured instead of sitting there waiting to break free then jump for my weapons..

+1 from me

+1, so I can be ready when I break out instead of being caught off guard.

This would be really nice if it is at all possible and it allows you to talk over comms and not be afraid that you'll miss your chance to escape.

+1 It should really be helpful especially against the checkerboard nests which are so common.

Paradise has a little bar over your character when doing some actions such as taking stuff off others and a few other things I can't remember. It'd be nice to know when I can escape.
"Huh, would you look at that... We are screwed yet again."
Plays as Phil "Termite" Smith

You can give a smartgun to every marine, and they would still find a way to FF with it.

We might be able to do this, but it would be a bit code intensive. The question would be, do we want this more than other bugs fixed, or new features?

This isn't exactly what you would call 'vital' to fix/add compared to other things but that's my view on it.

Considering this is a nice little visual touch so that you can maybe Rp screaming in agony and dying etc without the worry of being freed from a nest while typing.

I'm actually against it, if only because then the marine knows exactly when they're going to get out and can be prepared to rush to all his buddy's nests to make a ruckus instantly.

Which would be kinda shitty for team alien tbh. That's already a possibility, of course, but I feel a timer would only encourage it.

Give a simple message 30 seconds in advance "You are nearly free of the resin".
And yes, it is this or making captured marines not talk and stare at the screen, mouse ready.

Honestly, even if it's a bit code intensive it'll make the experience generally better for anyone who gets captured. At least you'll have an idea of when you're about to get out and will be ready instead of on another tab looking at cat pictures.

Being able to rush down whatever before your icon state even changes would be shitty, tho.

Sort of Neutral.
Marines does indeed should know when they're almost free but on other hand, they'll be ready to be a Rambo. I'm up for showing message that says, "Joseph Skinner is almost free!". Some around like that.

That'd be pretty bad, too, as then the alien would just hover over them.

It kind of defeats the purpose of knowing when you're almost free if the alien can see it and just sits on you.

Logically, you would know when you're about to get loose from whatever your stuck in. Therefore, you'd also be ready to fight. If a message does pop up saying "you're almost free" it'll have to make an audible noise because if the message just scrolls by without the person seeing it because they were tabbed out of the window then it's almost useless. I think the timer idea is the most logical, and the best idea to implement, but I wouldn't be opposed to a message popping up telling you you're almost free if it had an audible sound cue.
