Practicing as a SL

Post by flaksim » 11 Aug 2015, 18:24

Hello! I play as Maxim Janssens on the game, a big black burly marine that is usually a SL.

I'm trying to improve my SL'ing though, so if anyone has any feedback for me, feel free to post it here (its so easily overlooked in start of round OOC chat) :)

One key step to being an all around good player (and professional squad leader) is to clean up your mess and promote an orderly fashion throughout your team.

If Mick Riggens is tracking blood everywhere, stop him and make him clean it up.
David Giden left his empty cola bottle on the ground? Declare his wrong to him and have the lad fix his mistakes.
You notice Isabella Harris is drenched in blood from her comrades after constant field surgery. Spray or inform her to be sprayed to avoid infection and filth.

Doing all these things will improve your ability to have a nice, well managed, and above all Clean Team.

We at Aerospace Sanitation Inc. thank you for your time and effort, good day!

The best SL is one that actually cooperates with overwatch and doesn't try to run the squad himself.

Don't be too bossy with your Squad Marines.
Hear out their suggestion.
Work Together as a Team.
Keep the Squad together.
Don't provoke people.
Form a Rivalary with other squads.
Obey orders from Overwatch and Command Staffs.

1. Give a motivation speech
2. Make sure your squad sticks together and they don't wander off
3. Wait until the command staff dies due to internal power struggle
4. Go out on your own and get abducted by Aliens
5. Scream for 10 minutes that you squad members should come and rescue you
6. Get your squad members killed
7. Finally get out and run away leaving your dead comrades alone
8. Arrive at the shuttle and send it off
9. Get everyone at FoB killed because there's no shuttle
10. Hatch in the shuttle
11. The larva escapes and hides on the sulaco
12. The Alien grows and then kills every engineer
13. The SM blows up
14. Evac
15. The end

I liked round yesterday, where you were Bravo SL and Delta was merged with us. You were quite good SL, you just don't have enough OOC authority so some people keeps wonder off instead of sticking with you and squad. It will come after some amounts of round if you keep playing as good SL.

As a Squad Leader, I usually spend most of my time on the first shuttle not briefing people, but shutting up the ones that go "dem bravo fags our squad best squad". Because they never get the difference between making another squad look bad and making your own squad look better.

1. Appoint Second in Command
2. Appoint a shadow (bodyguard) for yourself
3. Let men divide into pairs/assign pairs.
4. If more then six men- assemble fireteams, or make your SiC do it.
5. Delegate, delegate, delegate.
6. Give clear and precise preparatory orders, and then give a "GO" to execute them.
7. If CO/BO gives you a shit order, order the squad to hold until you get a correct order.

Communicate with HQ and your squad at all time.

1.) Never condemn, criticize, or complain.
2.) Never condemn, criticize, or complain.
3.) Repeat things to get what you say through other people's heads.

If squad members know they're SL is an admin, I can see how they might be more afraid of not following SL orders. But half of the time people don't know who is behind the name, and even if they do... people are still going to wander off. Intentionally or not.

Ehm. Even if SL is admin, I won't follow stupid/suicidal order. Contra versa, I'll try to show him, I'm right and become higher in my eyes!

Hence why I always play under the same name.
I seem to do alot of the things suggested here. But I'm more at ease when I'm told to hold and secure an area, leaving the actual task of organizing that to one or two subordinates with smarts "my corporals" so to speak. And install myself and ly binoculars in a spot to observe the area with.

By the way, it does suck that you cant rotate the binocular sight without lowering them and turning your character, then raising them again, but that is a minor issue :p

Hey Flaksim, just some feedback. Two days ago we were in the same squad (Charlie Squad, I think) and you were easily the best Squad Leader I have ever had. You got us organized, you made sound decisions (example: You didn't follow the commanders suicidal order to attack the alien hive after three squads had already died trying to carry out his orders. Instead you had us keep guarding the dropship LZ which allowed any survivors to return to the Sulaco) you showed respect for your subordinates (aka us) and resisted the strange urge that so many SLs have to put themselves meaninglessly in harms way.

TL;DR You were a really good SL and as long as you keep doing what you are doing then I don't think you need to worry about anything. :)

Naked here.
I always played leader, rarely I get another job because I'm good at what I do. (atleast few marines agree <3) I'm playing CM as SL since the beginning. (my first nickname was Henry HERO Varro, Heya Heinrick \o\) So I think I have enough experience to opine, humbly.

I will say a few things I noticed when we were leading these days.

You are a good leader I could see clearly, but there are some things you could improve, for example:

Do not focus only on the first goal. You can have the mission to only save the LZ, but it's important to communicate with other SL's. Maybe someone needs one or two soldiers to help guard an entrance while the engineers work.

Give more attention to other SL's they are also as important as your soldiers. I remember that match. My Bridge Officer had locked my console and disappeared early on. I've been looking for you for help with the supply and had to waste a lot of time trying to get your attention. Because you got too busy with your radio. I know it's difficult to deal with everything, but that's why this work only have a few players who can be really good.

Assume that many marines are simply stupid or useless. Often you'll have to get up and do the work yourself. If you wait 10 minutes for an engineer to obey your command to close the LZ with girders. This may open a loophole for the outpost being invaded or even loss of soldiers simply because there were gaps in the defense. (I realized that you're a bit passive in the lead, it is good when we have a great squad. But we know that we are not always in good company.)

I've been trying this lately and had good results:
Oblige soldiers to choose a partner and inspire them to always stay with the partner, explain how it is important to form some kind of bond with such a partner and how it can save lives, etc. (always have someone to pull you is the most important thing in a confrontation and saves MANY lives)

Sorry for bad English, still improving.

Yeah I know, even when delegating as much as possible, an enormous amount of time still creeps in managing the unit via radio. But perhaps its also part of the job of a BO to look at the bigger picture, and issue orders by squad if one needs to detail some men off to another area?
