Radio Operator, Radio.

Post by TopHatPenguin » 25 Nov 2015, 12:52

Before I begin this idea has been tossed around a few times by different players of the community but I believe it's kind of written up here.

Summary: Basically add in a radio operator, radio.Instead of having it for an engineer to drag or pull down to the planet it would be nice if a standard could do it as they don't exactly have much to do and as they are a support role by carrying extra ammo and maybe a few tools. So the idea is to add in this radio kind of looking thing (Technical terms are dying) that a standard could pull down to the planet or maybe they could pick up some parts and screw drive them together add some wire to build it ?

The radio thing would work the same way as a bounced radio or a intercomm mounted on a wall but would be able to communicate with the Sulaco.

Benefits: Rp and actually being able to talk to Sulaco if command is incompetent or overwhelmed. (On a side note bounced radios are pretty uncool compared to this)

Details: I think the summary is most of the details needed..

Here, have some pictures to get the idea.

You get the idea.

Extra Info:

Two tile radius of the Radio (As in two tile radius around the radio would allow you to speak through it to Sulaco) once built. (Didn't want it too high to stop the clutter of chat.)

You would use it to communicate with Sulaco comms from the planet.

Downsides would be that it would need to have a powercell or be linked to an Apc.
Possibly also a downside could be that some of the message might be garbled due to the distance?

Implementation (Optional, if you have an idea how to implement it): Coding and Spriting.

Absolute +1, but here's some more input. This radio item could have two states, toggleable with a 5sec delay. Packed, can be worn on back but does not function, and deployed, which cannot be moved but is obviously functioning as intended.

+1 I would love to be a radio operator. And would make communication equipment an interesting resource

It wouldn't necessarily be a job, more of the actual radio device which could be constructed or vended that could be taken into the field.

Well I just know me and if I was in charge of that device I'd at the very least RP and feel like a Radio Operator

I think the idea needs to be cleaned up more, which channel exactly would they be communicating on? Broadcasting and receiving from regular sulaco comms? Would there be a limit or some sort of downside to the devices? This sounds like a great idea for low-pop, but for high-pop I could see it really cluttering comms.

Neutral right now since too many questions.

Neutral. I want this, but I also don't want this. It sounds to me like this means some marine is either gonna be stuck giving up his backpack to carry this thing, and marines are gonna dread it like they do command roles. But I also want it because yay radio operators.

You dont need a backpack as a standard. You can have an M41A in your armor slot, 5 spare mags, a sidearm in your belt, a for it in your belt and a mag in the armor, a knife in your armor and in your pocket. The backpack is enterly untouched when I play standard. Using it for granedes, engineer tools, spec ammo or such is an option, but this make just as much sense.

The pistol, a pistol mag, and three rifle mags on the belt with the rifle in your suit storage, two flares in your armor, and the knife in your boot is plenty of gear to have the radio on your back.

I was mainly thinking of having it for a standard as currently they are the "Support" role if you would like, they carry extra ammo, flares etc, however it would be nice if they had this as something else they could bring down to the planet or build down there to further support the team.

I'd rather not fuck with T-comms code, since it's already a flaming pile of shit.

If you guys really want this, the implementation can be that the radio operator is the only one who can access the Sulaco and the squads comms are based on Z-Level (Similar to how common is treated)
Poor commenter, awkward suggester, and even worse poster

If we did that, the radio operator should be able to use the radio while it's on his back.
