Resin Structure Reworks.

Post by Davidchan » 20 Dec 2015, 05:39

Summary (a quick, 2-3 sentence summary): A remodel of how Xenos construct and maintain their hives. Removal of doors and reworking Membranes into a more useable fashion. Walls would be significantly stronger.

Benefits (How this will benefit the server and game as a whole): Xenos would be encouraged to make different arrangement of hives using all available resin objects, not simply dropping down one or two types of resin in the most compact design possible.

Details (Description of how you think this would work, the benefits, etc): As this suggestion is rather wide, I'll just go through each resin object in detail.

Resin Wall: Health doubled. Currently it takes approx 5 shots from an unmodified M41 to destroy a wall, with this change they would require 10. Marines should think twice about breaching their way through a hive's wall rather than finding the 'door', multiple layer walls could be used by xenos to funnel marines.

Resin Membrane: Health Unchanged (1 Knife or M41 shot to destroy). All Xenos would have the ability to bypass a membrane by alt + left clicking the membrane. This exact mechanic already exists for Larva to slip through doors, expanding it to all Xenos for Resin membranes should not be difficult. Larger Xenos (T3 + Queen) may require some extra time to squeeze through. Dragged objects (infected marines and/or items) can not be dragged through a membrane, encouraging Xenos to devour and regurgitate hosts through membranes.

When destroyed, they become a Torn Membrane, like a curtain ripped open. When damaged, membranes allow everyone to pass freely while staying present (think harvested eggs). All Drone caste (Drone, Carrier, Hivelord and Queen) and Sentinel Caste (Sentinel, Spitter, Boiler and Praetorian) would gain a new ability 'Repair Membrane' for 50 plasma that would rebuild a torn membrane into a new one. Torn membranes would have the same health as a regular membrane, so 2 knife strikes or slashes from a xeno would completely remove one.

Resin Nests/Sticky Membrane: No significant changes, though they should be destroyed by fire if exposed to it. Torn membranes would be included in this fire vulnerability.

Resin Door: Removed. Membranes would take over their function as doorways, and walls should be used to stop marines from shooting their way in. No more corridor of 50 doors in the tunnels and hallways.

With stronger walls, Xenos can defend an area with half the plasma they would require before, double or triple layer walls requiring an entire magazine of an M41 just to break through. Membranes can be strategically placed to allow Xenos to quickly pass while rendering a marine with anything less than an SMG confined to a specific area. Marines with 4+ pistols on them would not likely be able to shoot through walls AND kill a Xeno defender, so if a marine too strong for a Drone to take out escapes his nest, a drone could simply hide around a corner and wait for that marine to get close, or just let a spitter take the marine down.

I like the buffed wall health, I think it's rather needed because they crumble easily. I also like the idea that membranes could be used as a door, it would actually provide a function if that were added. However, marines will EASILY tear through the hive if all the aliens have for doors are membranes that are basically paper. All they'd have to do is find the membrane, poke it with a knife, and that's it. Doors actually have a bit of health to them right now. Not much, but it's something.

I'd fully agree with this suggestion if it weren't for the absurdly easy entry-way into the hive that the membranes would become.

If the walls are used properly, the membranes will funnel marines into killzones rather than simplying allowing easy access for a rampage.

Exactly the point. Doors are being used to the same effect as walls right now because they have half the health with only a fraction of the slow down to Xenos. I've seen entire hives made of doors because there is no reason not to.

Using criss cross chunks of Resin walls with Membranes scattered in the pathway, with sticky resin on the path, Xenos could quite easily defend areas like the caves or prison ship with several layers of walls to soak up bullets and spit/pounce marines when they get close enough to be exposed and hampered.

Hell, if we wanted to take it a step further Resin Walls could degrade into sticky resin once they have taken enough damage to collapse, discouraging marines even more from just shooting their way through.

Honestly, I just want changes to the nestbuilding meta. I absolutely adore playing hivelord (when I'm not being SUPERPRAETORIAN) but it's difficult to do anything besides DOORSPAM when that's what all the drones (and the queen, for whatever reason, most rounds) are doing.

You can make some amazing choke points and killzones if you know what you're doing, especially if you make resin bunkers for a couple carriers facing into a single-tile entrance. With coordination, we dropped a 12 man assault in about 20 seconds using that.

I'm a fan of the tower defense hive building. I also like the idea of walls turning into sticky resin.

I don't want any xeno trying to make an entire hive out of doors.

The main reason to use walls over doors is it allows you to make marines move through your hive with a route you choose, which is better than freely cutting through doors which die in like 3 shots.

Door stacking is also the worst thing ever, and has been the death of many, many xenos.

Xenos use entire hives made of doors because they think it's a good idea. That doesn't mean it is one. I recently played a round in Prison where hivelords and drones turned the long hallways into a complete maze with walls and doors because it "slows down Marines". In reality, doors take as long as they do to open as they do to destroy. They slow down everyone and they remove any advantage runners, boilers, and crushers could have in those areas. Door spam is pretty much only good for blocking off nests.

I detailed a rework somewhere, the gist of it was:

Convert weeds to "resin floors", have resin floors function as a turf/tile, remove movement pentalty for marines, add stronger versions of walls/doors for hivelords, decrease resin cost for hivelords.

But, most of the stuff got spammer away by people making duplicate suggestions or not reading the suggestion are before making suggestions.

Anyway, Denied, as I already have a rework in progress.
