Star Citizen

Post by monkeysfist101 » 20 Dec 2015, 15:56

To those of you who haven't heard, Star Citizen is the next big thing in gaming. It's entirely crowdfunded and just passed the 101M mark. This game is beautiful graphics wise and has an entire cast of A-list voice actors. This game has FPS, space combat, and much more all seamlessly linked in one persistent universe.

Mercenary
Pilot
Pirate
Space Cop
Bounty Hunter
Soldier
Freight Captain
Like 200+ more jobs

The org I lead is predominantly convoy escort and bounty hunting oriented.

How much of that stuff is actually "in" so far? When I last tried, it was just starfighting.

Too much hype around it, I'll check it out once it actually gets released to see if it can live up to its promises.

Honestly, if this ever does get released, it's never going to live up to the amount of money poured into it. And yet, it has a community of basically religious zealots. I don't really get it.

While the majority of that list is not playable, it is getting there. They have a weekly newsletter that details the progress they've made. As far as what's playable, they have starfighting, racing, several planets available, limited exploration. A good amount of stuff such as the FPS combat is available in the Public Test Universe. I payed $45 for the starter package back when they released the ability o walk around in your hanger and look at your ship. Even if it doesn't meet the hype, what you could play going back over a year ago was fun and I've gotten my money's worth out of it.

The fact is, not that much money has been "poured into it." It's just that we get to see the amount as it goes in. Take SWTOR for example. It's a par MMO with par MMO graphics. SWTOR took $200M to produce compared to SC's crowdfunded $100M. The upside, however, of SC's development is that a sizable chunk of the money isn't going to a publisher. In other words, if it's half as good as SWTOR or a fifth as good as Destiny, it's lived up to its production cost. As for religious zealots, I can't speak for them though I assume they're no worse than Call of Duty, Fifa, and Halo fanatics.

The public test universe is out, still pretty basic but has a cool mix of things in it, multi-crew ships, zero-g fps, a derilect station to visit and gorgeous character animations. They've been updating with videos of physics testing so you can manipulate all objects by hand, information on how mining and repair will work.

this is the type of multiplayer sandbox game people have always wanted. the premise is that you can LITERALLY do anything. some people really want to see this become a reality, so i kind of get why some of people are following this to their dying breath.

I'm actually saving up for a good PC now, and once I get it, I'll probably join you and be a Bounty Huntee.

The game seems pretty good, but i watched a couple videos and it made me motion sick, 3D space games do that to me.

Hey, mind you, for a CryEngine game, it's EXTREMELY well optimized in its current state, pulling a trick to play the mini-PU offline I was able to get around 40 to 50 fps.
That said, it should run well for PCs that comply with 2016's AAA average spec standards (or so at least I assume)

My impression from it; the biggest money grab game of the decade. You can buy better ships depending on if you pay 20, 50 or 100 bucks/euros/dollars. Even better ships for even more cash.

All ship sales end when the game launches. Afterwards, they'll all be bought with in-game currency. The "money grab" you're talking about is where 99% of the game's funding comes from. They don't have a publisher meaning they don't get their money before people buy copies of the game. They've raised a little over 100M as of this post. That seems like a staggering amount for a game, but let's put this in perspective. Call of Duty: Black Ops II sold an estimated 24,400,000 copies as of November 1, 2015. Assuming the sales price averaged throughout price drops is $45. I know that's probably a bit low for the average price, but you get the point. This means that they've sold $1,098,000,000.00 or 1.1B. Compared to that, Star Citizen is working with roughly a billion less dollars. So, no, it's not a cash grab.

Or, you know, compare it to Destiny's marketing budget (since they got it before launch and all)

I thought about it, but I wanted to pick an average AAA game, not the highest budgeted game of all time.

I really wish my computer could run this but alas I'm still using Windows XP. It looks really good but from what I've seen it looks like a full release will be out 4-5 years from now. Maybe then I'll be able to play it.

By the looks of it, about 80% of the mechanics are finished. Soon CIG will turn their attention to polishing and world building. People are estimating a late 2016 early 2017 launch.

Mechanics, not playability. I've been keeping up with their status updates since mid 2014 and it's come a long way. They have their physics, flying, fps, npc, and interaction templates finished. What they add from there will fit in those templates and be much easier to add than making it from scratch like they have been doing. Games take years to develop and this is no different.
