So long story condensed into fewer words, BYOND 510 is going to feature some new and exciting things. Chief among them is the ability to drastically reduce lag. And something about dynamic lighting.

The video shows you gigantic explosions with pretty much zero lag, if you didn't notice. That's insane. This also relies on the process scheduler by Volundr, something that will support 510. This process scheduler comes with the goon version of SS13 and is used in a bunch of other servers. I am fairly sure that since Volundr maintains it, the CM team can ask him to license it out under something other than AGPL 3.0, which does not allow closed source. Thoughts?

I can possibly ask the Goon people about it. They are one of the few servers that understands the main reasons we stay closed-source (the biggest of which, is to limit "secrets" and "weapon damages/stats" from leaking out). They MIGHT be willing to work with us on something.

Goons themselves recently released their entire codebase as AGPL 3.0 after the leak happened. Though they are still staying closed source despite that for the same reason of preserving secrets. There might be some mutual understanding there.apophis775 wrote:I can possibly ask the Goon people about it. They mentioned releasing the 510 scheduler thing to all servers I think. Can't be certain on that though.

This would be amazing. SS13 itself would be a million times better with no lag. I honestly think one of my only frets with SS13 is just the lag, I mean you get used to it however it's just an annoyance. Hoping this turns out well and improves SS13 overall for the better.
