Whitelisted Positions

Post by Desolane900 » 17 May 2016, 10:25

Summary (a quick, 2-3 sentence summary): Whitelist several positions or jobs to only be playable after a certain time limit of gameplay corresponding with a player's ckey.

Benefits (How this will benefit the server and game as a whole): It'll stop some baldie who has never played before from joining as a Specialist, Squad Leader, or Bridge position then immediately going SSD because they don't know how to play. We've all seen it happen and all it does is fill a position that someone who knows what they're doing can play as.

Details (Description of how you think this would work, the benefits, etc): After maybe 18 hours of actual gameplay as a Standard Marine the positions will become available to play as. It's pretty annoying to any experienced marine player when some brand new player joins as an SL and has no clue what to do or what is going on then decides to click the little [X] in the top right corner, or worse, when a griefer joins as a Specialist and SADARs briefing within ten minutes of the round starting.

Implementation (Optional, if you have an idea how to implement it): Just add a timer to certain jobs that only goes down when someone is actively playing the round. After so much time playing over the course of several rounds the timer will hit zero and unlock the jobs.

This code is in place in Bay, I know that for sure, I don't believe it will be too far fetched to have here.

Honestly, I agree. Getting some play time to reach these positions is not too ridiculous. It will definitely weed out the retarded fuckers who go commander and spend their (limited) time playing covering people in full body paint.

+1 because of everything stated above.....fuckin BALDIES

hang on...could we make it reset if your not on for a certain amount of time? i.e if you don't come on for 1 month or something for atleast a minute one of the jobs goes away? probably way to much but eh....a man can dream

I had a gut reaction when I first saw the title. "WHITELISTS? Like, the predators? Just to play Liaison/Bridge Officer/Squad Leader? NO!!"

Yeah, better wording would be what everyone else calls it: Time Locks. +1 for good reasons. Summers coming, command is fucked over by incompetent baldies who don't know how to walk, etc.

Have marine be the first locked, then ENGIE/MED/SPC/SL, then next to be grouped up is RO/CT/MT/CE, and then CL/BO, then XO/CO.

Would definitely help in terms of newer players going straight for jobs that are vital to the round when they've barely played a Marine. Also, as stated prior, summer is indeed on it's way and an influx of newer players will be rolling in.

+1 Personally I would like this for CO, XO, CE/MTs, CMO and SLs. Mainly CE/MTs so we get less Explody McSupermatter

I think some appropriate times would be as follows:

4 hours: SL, RO
6 hours: Doctor, CMO, CE/MT
8 hours: BO, XO, CL
10 hours: CO

These timers would reset after 2 months inactivity.

hours are in no way appropriate. at all, it's just not enough to get the gist of it. at worst, your times should be converted into days. at best, doubled and converted into days.

Those times seem pretty fair to me. Remember it's how much time you spend actually playing. Not afk or in a lobby. Maybe a staff member could also halt the timer in case they see someone just sitting around.

Would it be possible to count in-game hours? When I noticed that Bay has time-locked jobs, I just joined once, then didn't play until they unlocked.

4 hours of actual playing is one - one actual round. with luck, two. that is physically not enough to make you be a somewhat good SL. it's barely enough to make you a not-noob squad marine, emphasis on BARELY.

I always was saying, that we need whitelists based on time for at least command jobs, but Apop replied me that there won't be any such whitelists. I don't get it, really.

BTW, I checked this, just-made account can join as CO. "Have a good round"

I don't know, I was on another server when they did something similar. I don't know if this is how it would work, but if this does happen wouldn't most people have to rework their way back up, even veterans, so unless their was some admin intervention, most of us would be playing as marine standard for a while. Also, wouldn't their be a lack of doctors, COs, XOs, BOs, CTs, MTs, CLs, CMOs, SLs, ROs, and you never mentioned anything about MPs, due to everyone having to work their way back up?

I think we need whitelists based on time only for CO, XOs, BOs, CE, CMO, CL. Everything else can be open for everyone.

I used to think this was a bad idea, but we could seriously use timelocks/whitelists on the important roles. Too many times have I had to handle a new player who joined in as CO 'just because'

+1 from me.

+1. I'll happily teach newbie doctors, but when you have to tell the fucking CMO what to do, there's a problem. +1.

I thought we had a suggestion similar to this, the problem was that people could log in, be inactive for those certain amount of days, completely bypassing the time lock, and get the roles easy-peasy. But still, its worth the shot. +1.

EDIT: As Derp said, hour locks sound hell of alot better than day locks.
Elijah Makus [Sulaco (CO)] says, "Some crazy son of a bitch killed the queen with his bare hands"
Reenus Turner asks, "Do you got a bipod I can put on my knife?"
