Hull Breaching Exception

Post by chaplin » 25 Jun 2016, 20:39

Summary: Marines pump phoron into the bottom deck of the Sulaco to ward off an alien invasion. This is effective at forcing the aliens to retreat as the violent flows of air and toxins rush around stirring the hive infested bottom deck like a big chunky bowl of bug soup. The aliens as their hive-mind like intelligence would imply that they would in fact be able to rationalize a decision to breach the hull to nullify the atmospheric threat created by the marines. This is a wonderful example as to why every rule and law ever created shall have exclusions because there is not a single man made law that does not yield some kind of exclusion to some kind of unforeseen circumstance. Thus the results of the horrendously overbearing rule about hull breaching led to a complete stalemate, aliens withdrawing back to the planet to do nothing and effectively halting game play because they did not have a proper response to the atmospheric threat created by the marines.

Benefits: Prevents game play from halting and creates another avenue of possibility. It is only a fair counter to marines using atmos to smoke the aliens out, which we can assume from the franchise aliens would be smart enough to respond to by doing exactly what admins banned, hull breaching.

Details: Obviously I understand the reason behind restricting hull breaching, pretty grief-ish. But it is just as grief-ish for the marines to gas the aliens and the aliens be restricted from responding to it realistically. Humans are intelligent enough to go "Sure lets gas the aliens since they're all trapped in the bottom deck" and as I've stated already aliens are intelligent enough to go, "Oh no you don't hooman" and pop a hole in the hull to protect themselves so game play can continue, again in a reasonably intelligent and escalated manner.

Implementation: With a moderator's approval given ample enough reason, such as the example described above, he can inform the queen or alien in question that they are allowed to breach the hull on the basis of escalation and rp. ALIENS SHOULD ASK BEFORE HULL BREACHING.

Thank you for your time.

Just don't phoron. It can crash the server or break atmo. That's why I'm so adament on telling the marines not to.
CM was obviously inspired by Starcraft: Ghost opening. At least when marines takes too long to deploy.

Aliens should never breach. It makes no sense as it can kill their hosts.

It wasn't even to kill their hosts, it was to clear out phoron so the aliens could function without burning and being sucked/pushed around everywhere.

I was the queen and a half on this round, oh boy oh boy.

Maybe make intentional phoron fires only for "last resort" like exploding the supermatter, because the phorom fire screwed up the lower deck badly, almost did no effect on the aliens, killing the other marines that tried to fight us and I decided to evacuated down to the planet because the air was UNBARABLE to fight on.

as much as i hate to say it, just ban phoron gassing and deny aliens the right to breech. Simpler, less lag, and overrall a better idea that has less admins worrying about giving permissions to aliums or anyone for that matter.

Yeah the phoron thing was... very bad to put it lightly.

Let's just not do that again and say we didn't. It ruins the round for both sides.

Just like breaching but there will always be aliens that breach and nothing happens.

Breaches can be hard to catch until it's too late, and everyone caught is dealt with accordingly. Please don't spread misinformation.

What you might be talking about is FIXING breaches, which is simply not possible without Admin+ intervention, as Moderators lack the ability to spawn turf.

Okay sorry. Let me correct myself:

"Nothing seemingly happens"

Plenty of times, the acid is simply deleted and the players are probably warned but in turn, it keeps happening every few rounds, I wonder if it's the same people sometimes. I've seen probably only one ban where the alien player goes SSD (which is probably a sign of a ban) and one angry admin who said "WHO BREACHED?" beforehand.

Other times, they are simply paused as the breach is fixed but allowed to continue their merry way after it's fixed. It seems like it's only lightly punished.

It still ruins the current round. Compared to the other rules where things are dealt more harshly, sometimes this rule seems to let off people too much which may be why we have the occasional breached Sulaco, even if the breach was obviously intentional even if they say it's not or that they accidentally didn't know space was behind it. After all, ignorance is not an excuse.

@ShortTemperedLeprechaun
In short it was a clusterfuck of a round.
* We started with no bridge staff, the CE had to take command.
* We got a bridge officer after a little while.
* The marines ended up retreating.
* The aliens took the shuttle up.
* The marines barricaded main stairs, put up grilles around cargo stairs, and an emitter trap in engineering.
* After a long stalemate an engineer took a canister of phoron and a lit welding torch down the main stairs and opened the canister.
* The aliens retreated after a while.

Engineers barricaded all the ladders, set up two emitter traps (one covering Engineering, the other covering half of the main ladders), and a force field array at main ladders. The aliens weren't going anywhere, and those that tried died horribly.

The phoron release was an attempt to end the stalemate, but proved relatively ineffective when the Engi who went down failed to account for and circumvent the emergency shutters, which contained most of the heat, causing the idea to fall drastically short of expectations while effectively sealing off the second level.

Basically.

Can't do much in the hangar when everyone decided to retreat upstairs. It was even worse that round in character for marines when aliens started throwing huggers up ladders as well as slashing ladders, exploiting the bug.

It's a bug yes. Probably uses the same mechanic as throwing grenades down ladders.

-1.

Phoron gas release WAS legit in the old rules in some situations. Now, it's bannable specifically.
